South Island ( is a location in the サウスアイランド Sausu Airando ) ? . It is also the main setting of Sonic the Hedgehog series and has made many appearances in the earlier games. South Island is known to be a trove of gems and Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) ancient ruins, that supposedly shifts along the water due to some connection to the Chaos Emeralds. The island is also inhabited by  animals.

, Dr. Robotnik returns and kidnaps all the inhabitants, along with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Miles "Tails" Prower, demanding a ransom of six Chaos Emeralds to return them. Sonic goes out to stop him once again and succeeds. The Zones of the game are as follows:

, South Island is one of the battle arenas. It is the very first arena in story mode, and is where the player character faces Sonic the Fighters Knuckles the Echidna. The arena is set on a small island plateau, in an area that looks mostly like the Green Hill Zone. If the player plays as Knuckles here, the player will fight a shadow Knuckles.
, Robotnik's latest floating base threatens South Island, so Sonic and Knuckles resolve to take it down. Sonic Blast While the location was not specified as South Island in the western storyline, the presence of another version of  Green Hill Zone further implies it. Zones of the game are below:

and its Sonic Adventure 2 GameCube re-release, , Green Hill Zone was a secret stage that could be unlocked by obtaining all 180 Sonic Adventure 2: Battle Emblems. On the Stage Select screen, the icon for Green Hill could be found on a secluded island, presumably South Island.
features Sonic Battle Green Hill as an unlockable arena unrelated to Story Mode. Emerald Town's landscape greatly resembles Green Hill, but whether or not it takes place on the island is not confirmed.

, South Island was the location Sonic Runners Adventure Sonic traveled to after hearing from Tails that Dr. Eggman was causing trouble there. After finding Tails, Sonic put a stop to Eggman's plan before following Eggman off the island.
, after meeting the Sonic Mania five Eggrobos that were excavating the Phantom Ruby at Angel Island, Sonic, Tails and eventually Knuckles are sent to Green Hill Zone thanks to the power of the Ruby. At the end of the Zone, the character have to fight the Death Egg Robot. After the battle, they encounter the Hard Boiled Heavies, and are immediatly teleported to Chemical Plant Zone.

In , one can see on the world map that Sonic Forces Green Hill covers a significant part of the island, leaving no room for the other zones depicted in the original Sonic the Hedgehog. However, this is likely due to presentation reasons and is not intended to be an accurate map of Sonic's world, much like how the continents in Sonic Unleashed do not match up with world maps from previous games.
