Sonic the Hedgehog X Angry Birds

Sonic the Hedgehog X Angry Birds, also known simply as Sonic X Angry Birds (ソニック×アングリーバード, Sonikku × Angurī Bādo^?), was a crossover between Sonic Team's Sonic the Hedgehog and Rovio Entertainment's Angry Birds franchises, both of which are subsidiaries of Sega. The crossover originally ran from March 14 to March 21, 2024, and featured characters from both series across five games. Sonic characters appeared in Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Friends and Angry Birds Dream Blast, while Angry Birds characters appeared in Sonic Forces: Speed Battle and Sonic Dash.

The crossover returned in December 2024, with Shadow making appearances in Angry Birds 2 and Angry Birds Friends as part of the Fearless: Year of Shadow campaign, alongside Sonic returning to Angry Birds Dream Blast throughout December and January. This is the second crossover between both series after they first collaborated in Sonic Dash and Angry Birds Epic in 2015.

Summary

In a story made for the event, the Piggy kingdom, the antagonists of the Angry Birds series, opened a portal to Sonic's universe and teamed up with Dr. Eggman to steal the eggs. When Red, Chuck, and Bomb discovered their plan, they, along with the rest of the flock, traveled to Sonic's universe and teamed up with Sonic and his friends to stop their respective villains.

Together, they managed to defeat Eggman and the pigs. Afterward, the flock bid farewell to Sonic as they, along with the pigs, returned to their universe, with the portal malfunctioning and exploding shortly after.

Sometime later, a fierce storm begins raging over Piggy Island. As the birds gather to discuss how to stop it, Silver points out that they don't fully understand the nature of the storm. She suggests that one of them should be slingshotted into the cloud with a device to take measurements and return with the data, so they can analyze it properly. However, no one volunteers. Eventually, Marlon, a bird without any special powers, steps forward. Red praises his bravery and decides to go with him.

The two are slingshotted toward the cloud, but just as they approach, Red is struck by lightning, causing him to experience strange visions of alternate versions of his flock and other creatures. Red eventually makes it back to the shore with the collected data, but Marlon is nowhere to be found. The birds reluctantly decide to seek help from Professor Pig, one of the few friendly pigs on the island. He agrees to assist, believing that no one should be separated from their family.

Soon, Silver manages to open another portal, though she expresses doubts about whether Marlon is on the other side. Red insists they have no choice but to take the risk. Meanwhile, in Sonic's universe, Orbot informs Dr. Eggman about an unauthorized dimensional rift, matching the signature of the pigs. Eggman dismisses the concern and orders his Badnik army to enter the portal to go "bird hunting". However, unbeknownst to them, Shadow is watching and immediately follows them through the portal.

Red and Ruby soon realize that Eggman has arrived, accompanied by hundreds of Badniks and pigs. Just as they prepare to face him, Shadow lands between them, ready for action. In the midst of the fight, Red scolds Silver, saying she was supposed to lead them to Marlon, not invite an invasion with Silver arguing that interdimensional physics aren't that simple. Although Shadow is assisting the birds, he warns them that he's only there to stop Eggman, advising them to stay out of his way.

Shadow then charges forward, spinning through the Badniks and pigs to reach Eggman. Surprised by his presence, Eggman barely has time to react before Shadow spindashes into his Egg Mobile, sending him flying back through the portal. Eggman curses Shadow and swears revenge.

The birds celebrate their victory, but Shadow, uninterested in their world, simply states his work is done and that it's not his concern. He then steps through the portal, returning to his own universe. Ruby, watching him go, quips, "They do say never meet your heroes." Bomb then tells her he still likes his Shadow hat.

Sonic Forces: Speed Battle

During the Friends Unite event, you'll have the opportunity to race against Red for the chance to win an exclusive Challenger Chest. You'll also find Chuck, a special character with new power-ups to play with. Earn gold rings and character cards throughout the event.

Red and Chuck appear in Sonic Forces: Speed Battle and were added on 14 March 2024 as playable characters in their movie designs. Their event ran between March 14 - 21, 2024. The characters have the following gameplay statistics:

Despite the fact the crossover ended on 21 March 2024, Red and Chuck were made available for a further nineteen days via the following three main events' Bonus Event.

Sonic Dash

Collect exclusive Red and Chuck character cards as you dash through levels to add these two Angry Birds characters to your roster. During the crossover event, you'll also be able to collect daily-themed collectible items on the track.

In Sonic Dash, Red and Chuck were re-released in their movie designs. They were added to the game on 14 March 2024 and their events swapped daily between the pair. They have the following gameplay statistics:

Explore the Tower of Fortune to find eight new Sonic Friends hats. These fully upgradable hats not only increase your flock power, but also grant you entry to the Sonic-themed 'You're too slow adventure'. Speed through challenges for exceptional rewards.

In Angry Birds 2, the player could acquire the "Sonic Friends" hat set, which are based on various Sonic the Hedgehog characters for the flock to wear. Each hat had three levels the player could upgrade to by paying a certain amount of Event Coins in the dedicated "Green Hill Shop" during the event. Each hat could be acquired by scaling the Tower of Fortune, apart from Terence's which could be obtained in the "You're Too Slow!" hat adventure. The hats are the following:

Additionally, the "Sonic the Hedgehog" spell became available. The ability, being a promotional spell, works exactly like the Golden Duck spell; launching Sonic causes Rings to rain from the sky causing damage to anything that is hit by them.

Finally, a giveaway was held on the Angry Birds 2 Facebook page. Players would share their childhood memories of playing Sonic and Angry Birds, and ten winners would receive either Bomb's Shadow hat or an alternative Sonic Friends hat if the former was already owned, ten "Sonic the Hedgehog" spells, and gems.

The event came back for a rerun on 4 December 2024. Terence's Big hat could now be obtained on Floor 40 in the Tower of Fortune. It was later announced on 11 December 2024 that the "Sonic Friends" hat set would be returning to the Hat Shop permanently, allowing players who missed both events to unlock them by spending Black Pearls.

On 12 December 2024, the "Shadow Battlesuit" hat set was added to the game as part of the Fearless: Year of Shadow campaign. Each hat could be obtained by scaling the Tower of Fortune with the exception of Stella's, which could be acquired in "The Colorful Chaos Adventure". All hats could be upgraded in "The Shadow Store" to resemble Super Shadow.

In addition, Shadow himself was added to the game as a limited time spell, which was once again a reskin of the Golden Duck spell. Dr. Eggman also replaced all of the boss pigs until December 19th, complete with new animations.

Angry Birds Friends

Take down the Bad Piggies with the help of Sonic in a special tournament. With Dr. Eggman reinforcing the piggy towers, these themed levels are sure to put your skills to the test.

In Angry Birds Friends, the "Hetching the Hogs Tournament" was hosted throughout the week, with a series of special Green Hill-inspired levels being made for it. The levels feature several Easter eggs such as Goal Plates and "No Fun Allowed" Signs. Rings can also be found and collected in the levels. Within the levels, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy can be spotted. One of the levels has the player destroy a massive structure modeled after Doctor Eggman's face. Additionally, pigs wear 'hats' based off Eggman and various Badniks.

Players on the Angry Birds Friends Facebook page were also tasked with finding the seven Chaos Emeralds hidden in the wallpaper made for the tournament. The winners were rewarded with Bird Coins and power-ups in their Piggy Mail.

Then starting on December 2nd, as part of the Fearless: Year of Shadow campaign, a series of four special tournaments dedicated solely to Shadow was later held in Angry Bird Friends called the "Unleashing the Shadow Tournament", which lasted from 2 December 2024 to 8 December 2024.

In addition to the returning pigs dressed as Badniks and Eggman, Terence's Wingman power-up was updated to feature Terence wearing a Shadow hat.

Angry Birds Dream Blast

Channel your speediest hedgehog to complete levels in a race against fellow players. The faster you burst those bubbles, the better rewards you'll receive.

In Angry Birds Dream Blast, players would have a chance to get a Sonic the Hedgehog icon. Classic Sonic also temporarily replaces Chuck in his Flash Race, which was called "Sonic's Flash Race" during the event.

Eight players would compete to see who can beat ten levels the fastest. The top winner would receive coins and power-ups.

A giveaway was also held on the Angry Birds Dream Blast Facebook page where random commenters who commented "Gotta go fast!" on the post were rewarded with coins and a free booster pack.

From 20 December 2024 to 16 January 2025, Sonic made his return to the game, this time as a bubble through a free power-up, similar to how Red, Chuck, and Bomb function in-game. When tapped or touched by another bird, Sonic bursts in a flash of blue electricity, popping nearly all of the bubbles around him.

Trivia

• Elements of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise have made cameo/crossover appearances in Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Epic, and Angry Birds Friends.
• The 'No Fun Allowed' decoration used during the collaboration in Angry Birds Friends is a reference to an illustration from Sonic the Hedgehog: Sonic's Shoes Blues, popularized online.
• On page four of the promotional “Two Worlds Collide” comic, the teeth on the Construction Pig weren't colored in, this error was fixed when the comic was released on the Angry Birds website in their comics library.
  • In addition, the two parts of the comic also got new covers.

• On the Rovio Gaming Discord server, one of the emojis features Ruby, Red's sister, dressed in a Sonic outfit, similar to the one Red can obtain in Angry Birds 2.
• The collab marks the first time Sonic Forces: Speed Battle has non-Sonic characters appear.
• The background music used in the Angry Birds 2 trailer is "Racing Hearts", by Mattie Maguire.
• Way before this crossover and the one in 2015, Red appeared as a cameo in Sonic Universe #32 published by Archie Comics.
