Sonic Pocket Adventure - Unused Intro Sequence!

The unused intro sequence.

The Japanese demo version of the game titled Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure: Trial was shown in stores to promote the game and features a single Act of Neo South Island Zone. The demo version has extra content at the start which was never featured in the final game. Before the Sega logo screen, some Japanese text is shown that translates into "Finally... A supersonic action game... on the Neo Geo Pocket". Before the title screen, a intro sequence is shown, featuring Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and a dark silhouette of Dr. Robotnik with more text promoting the game at the end. The intro would also play before the title screen.

SPA DebugMenu

Debug mode menu.

Change byte 0x1F of the rom to 0xFF in a hex editor to enable Developer Mode. (This is done automatically in old emulators such as R.A.P.E. and NeoPocott, for some reason.) When the Sega screen is displayed, press the Option button to jump to the main debug menu.

An interesting function of the debug mode is that it allows the player to switch between Sonic and Tails by pressing the Sega Genesis B Button button. It is also possible to trigger a free-movement mode by pressing both Sega Genesis A Button and Sega Genesis B Button simultaneously.[1]
