Sonic CD (ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ CD[1] Sonikku za Hejjihoggu CD?) is a port of Sonic the Hedgehog CD for the Sega CD. Initially released to be bundled in Intel PCs in 1995, it was published standalone by Sega in 1996 for PCs running Windows 95.

Amy Rose A cheerful girl full of energy who likes mysterious things and fortune-telling. She came to Little Planet by the "divine message of cards," but there she has a "destined" encounter with Sonic. And then...[3]
CD Eggman
Doctor Robotnik An evil genius scientist. This time around, his target is the Time Stones. He also schemes for world domination. In order to oppose his rival, Sonic, he has constructed a robot just like him.[4]
Metal Sonic 1
Metal Sonic The ultimate robot built by Robotnik. His abilities are the same as Sonic's, and what's more, he can put out speeds faster than Sonic in an instant. Aligned with Robotnik's intentions, he regards Sonic as an enemy.[4]

New features[]

  • A longer FMV version of the intro and ending cutscenes are introduced here.
  • A loading screen, showing the D.A. Garden from the Japanese version of the original game, is introduced.
  • The D.A. Garden now has the past tracks, although Little Planet looks like in the present.
  • A secret debug menu is added.

Changes[]

  • Both the title screen and the Special Stages run much faster than before.
  • At the start of the battle against the Egg Tilter, there is no longer a gray platform that prevents the player from leaving the pinball course.
  • The game no longer slows down when the Egg Bubble generates its bubbles like in the original.
  • Some sound effects in the Sound Test are missing and the number codes only use two listings rather than three.
  • Some of the fading effects are missing.
  • There is an option for 30 FPS and 60 FPS.

Cheat codes[]

  • Stage Select: At the title screen, the player has to press UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, SPACE.
  • View staff's Time Attack records: At the title screen, the player has to press RIGHT, RIGHT, UP, UP, DOWN, SPACE.
  • Sound Test: At the title screen, the player has to press DOWN, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, SPACE.
  • Edit Mode: At the Sound Test, the player has to select PCM#12 and DA#11, and then press SPACE. An hidden image of Tails by Yasushi Yamaguchi will be displayed.
  • Eighth Special Stage: At the Sound Test, the player has to select PCM#07 and DA#07, and then press SPACE.
  • Hidden Image by Masahiro Sanpei: At the Sound Test, the player has to select PCM#11 and DA#09, and then press SPACE.
  • Hidden Image by Takumi Miyake: At the Sound Test, the player has to select PCM#04 and DA#21, and then press SPACE.
  • Hidden Image by Kazuyuki Hoshino: At the Sound Test, the player has to select PCM#03 and DA#01, and then press SPACE.

Trivia[]

  • This marks the first Sonic the Hedgehog game to be released on PC.
  • In Europe, the Sega CD original contained the Japanese soundtrack, but for the PC port it was switched to the US soundtrack for an unknown reason. There wouldn't be a re-release of the game with the Japanese soundtrack until the 2011 mobile port from Christian Whitehead.
