As with the other gamebooks in the same series, the readers do tasks at the end of each double page to determine which page they will go to next. Tasks include spot the difference and mazes.
Coconuts is throwing coconuts against Sonic and the reader is tasked to count the almost 30 of them appearing in the picture. Finding 20 or more leads to the Chemical Plant Zone, less sends him to Aquatic Ruins Zone.
Here there are 16 Spiny (of whom 3 have 4 spikes) and 9 Grabbers (of whom 2 have 8 legs). There is also a Chaos Emerald hidden (on the blue bubbly pylon on the top left). Sonic has to spot the real Badniks. Finding four leads to Casino Night Zone. Fewer or more leads to the Aquatic Ruins Zone.
This double page looks like a gameboard of a tabletop game, where the player moves a coin along some squares following the number of a die, and the instructions. Starting underwater, Sonic deals with traps and Chop Chops that send him back some squares, but also Power Rings and Springs that send him forward. On the surface there are Buzzers and Grounders. Reaching the end lets player decide whether to continue to Casino Night Zone or to the Hill Top Zone (note: as the next Emerald is hidden in the next Zone, jumping directly to the Wing Fortress misses it).
A maze, where the player has to direct Sonic (from the centre of the page) to either of the two exits; Crawl Badniks are also at the edges of the maze. A second Emerald is hidden in the drawing (on the bottom left of the drawing). The exits lead either to the Hill Top Zone or the Oil Ocean Zone.
Sonic is on a spire standing on a lava river and has to spot several things and Badniks: an Emerald (on the top of the pole of the second spire), a pair of sneakers (among the flowers of the second spire), Sol the Fire Orbinaut (in the lava behind the second spire), Rexor the Lavasaurus (in the lava, behind a pine on the right) and Spiker the Conehead (on the rightmost pine of the third spire). Finding them all leads to the Mystic Cave Zone; otherwise back to the Chemical Plant Zone.
The reader has to find the Emerald hidden in the drawing, and unscramble the letters TXENSIE INEHTEGE hangind from the vines, to find where to go next: Oil Ocean Zone (sixteen) or Metropolis Zone (eighteen). The Emerald is on the vine holding the N of TXENSIE.
Tails has fallen in the oil, and 24 Sonics are standing on the platform. All of them are fake (filled by Robotnik) that have some deformities, like different shape, number of spikes or different sneakers or socks. Except the real one (perhaps on the top right). Finding them leads to the Metropolis Zone; otherwise back to the Aquatic Ruins Zone.
Tails wrote a message for Sonic on the wall, but an exploding Asteron broke it, and pieces of the wall lay around. The player has to put the pieces together in a drawing (like a jigsaw) and read the message:
THE REI SA
YE LL OW
EM ER ALD
HI DDE N
NEAR HE RE
The Emerald is on the top left of the drawing. Then go either to the next page, or directly to the Sky Chase Zone.
The next page has a 3d drawn maze where Sonic has to find his way throug the Zone and reach one of two exits, leading either to the Sky Chase Zone, or the Wing Fortress Zone (note: as the next Emerald is hidden in the next Zone, jumping means missing it).
Sonic pilots the Tornado, surrounded by Turtloids, Nebulas and Balkiries. Tails has been captured. The reader has to count 12 Turtloids (there are 11, but half one is drawn right at the left edge of the picture), Tails ( held by a Nebula on the right of the plane) and another Emerald (at the right-hand wheel of the plane). Succeeding leads to the Special Zone, otherwise to the Wing Fortress Zone.
Sonic holds a picture of a Clucker, and is in front of 17 numbered incomplete Cluckers; each one is missing a detail, but Sonic has to find the complete one, then turn to the page that corresponds to its number (27), which is the next page.
Here the narration asks the player if they have found all six Emeralds, otherwise start over. If yes, the player has to spot a Grey Emerald (on the lower left) and answer 7 questions, such as what is the name of the planet, what color are Sonic's sneakers, if Tails can fly etc. before moving to the next Zone. The answers are upside-down on the lower right.
Sonic battles Dr. Robotnik in his robotic suit. There are two identical images and the player has to spot the differences (10) between them before moving to the next page.
The Wing Fortress explodes also damaging the biplane; the player has to find the six missing parts scattered in the exploding debris (flapper, wheel, tailplane, tailfin, blade, wing) in order to repair it.
Hill Top Zone
The animals celebrate Sonic's return. The player has to spot 6 badniks in the image (a Clucker in the rocks on the upper left, a Spiny by a tree base on the left, an Asteron among the flowers behind Tails's hand; a Spiker behind Sonic's hand, an Orbinaut behind Sally's face... the last one is very hard to find) in order to continue the party.
