Sonic the Hedgehog Adventure Gamebook 1 is the first Gamebook in the Adventure Gamebook series published by Ladybird in the United Kingdom.

Synopsis[]

The gamebook follows a rough approximation of the plot of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, including visits to the Emerald Hill Zone, Chemical Plant Zone, Aquatic Ruins Zone, Casino Night Zone, Hill Top Zone, Mystic Cave Zone, Oil Ocean Zone, Metropolis Zone, Sky Chase Zone, Wing Fortress Zone, Special Zone, and finally the battle with Dr. Robotnik. The order in which the zones are traveled depends upon the ability of the reader.

As with other gamebooks in the same series, the readers must count Rings, Chaos Emeralds and other such items on each page. Readers are sent to different pages depending on their findings. This is unique from other gamebooks that have a reader simply pick an option and do the page that shows the outcome.

Solutions[]

Emerald Hill Zone
There are 18 or so Rings hidden in the picture. Finding 15 or more takes you to Aquatic Ruins Zone; otherwise to the Chemical Plant Zone.
Chemical Plant Zone
A maze with two exits. One leads to Aquatic Ruins Zone, another to the Casino Night Zone.
Aquatic Ruins Zone
There are columns with numbers; the sum of numbers on each column result from 37 to 40. Two of them result less than 20 and lead to two pages: either the Casino Night Zone or the Hill Top Zone.
Casino Night Zone
There are 9 "Jack Pot" symbols hidden; finding 7 or more leads to Mystic Cave Zone, otherwise to the Hill Top Zone.
Hill Top Zone
A spot the difference puzzle; discovering 8 differences between the two landscapes leads to Oil Ocean Zone otherwise to Mystic Cave Zone.
Mystic Cave Zone
A Snakes and ladders game for one person: rolling a die, avoiding breakaways platforms (that send Sonic down) and climb vines (going up), the player must take his coin to either of the two exits, leading to the Oil Ocean Zone or the Sky Chase Zone.
Oil Ocean Zone
The player must detect and identify two pairs of identical "Balloon Spitters" among many, and add their accompanying numbers. The sum leads to the next page.
Metropolis Zone
Robotnik has created about 20 fake Tailses who are hidden in the picture among dozens of Badniks. Similar to Where's Wally?, the reader must discover 18 or more of them to continue to the same zone; otherwise he proceeds to the Sky Chase Zone.
The next page has a maze of lines of gold rings. Two lead to badniks, one leads to a surprise (Tails) and the other two lead to exits, either to the Sky Chase Zone, or the Special Zone.
Sky Chase Zone
Sonic rides the Tornade piloted by Tails (from now on Tails appears in all pages). The instructions tell the reader to restart the whole book if they haven't found the route to Tails in the previous page (also if they failed to find 18 "fake Tails" in the Metropolis Zone, they skipped the maze portion that allowed them to rescue Tails). This double page looks like a gameboard of a tabletop game, where the player moves a coin along some squares. Some squares mention Robotnik, Nebulas, Turtloids, and Balkiries, and send the piece either move on/go back a few places, or go back to the start. The player then chooses to go either to the Wing Fortress Zone or the Special Zone.
Wing Fortress Zone
Sonic and Tails look at some panels with a "color the dot" puzzle. When the dotted shapes are shades, they reveal random letters and numbers. The letters when sorted out spell out ROBOTNIK. The reader then moves either to the Special Zone or fight Robotnik.
Special Zone
Sonic and Tails are looking for 6 emeralds in the picture. Strangely, the instructions tell the player to go back to 4 if they haven't found Tails (it would be impossible to reach this page before passing the Sky Chase before where the same instruction is given). Finding the emeralds leads to Robotnik; otherwise the read goes back to the Casino Night Zone.
Robotnik
Robotnik is in his Battle Suit. 9 figures of Sonic in Spin Attack follow maze-like routes towards the Suit, and four of them lead to successful hits. Finding them demolish the Doc.
Fortress debris
Robotnik's fortress has been exploded. In another maze, Sonic needs to follow a route among the debris to reach Tails in his plane.
Emerald Hill Zone
Sonic and Tails fly back home. In the picture the reader must find 6 of their friends, 5 Monitors and 8 energy rings.
