Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a special promotional cartridge created for the Sega Genesis by Paramount Pictures to promote the then-upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film.

The cartridge was distributed to content creators on 21 November 2024, to promote the film and celebrate the release of advance tickets on 25 November 2024. Along with being a fully functional Sega Genesis game, the cartridge also includes a cheat code that, when entered, revealed the release date for the final trailer. As a result, this marked the first time since Sonic 3D Blast (1996) that an official Sonic entry for the system was released.

The cartridge was later available to win as one of the 15 prizes for the 12 Hours of Sonic 3 Giveaway.

Features[]

  • Posters: A collection of posters used in advertising for the film.
  • Unlock: A screen featuring Shadow on the Dark Rider chasing Sonic down an endlessly looping highway. The player can control Sonic by moving left, right, and jumping, but they cannot win or lose. If the level select code from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Up Up Down Down Up Up Up Up) is performed, Sonic will say "Hey, I said no cheat codes! ...Okay, just this one," and the player will be booted to the menu, unlocking the fourth and final option.
  • Trailer?: An emblem depicting Sonic the Hedgehog as seen in the game series is displayed, along with the release date for the final trailer: 25 November 2024. A clip from the film of Shadow punching the camera plays before booting the player to the menu.

Soundtrack[]

"Chill Gallery", the original song that plays in the "Posters" screen was composed by Renalani, and the "Unlock" screen song, titled "Unlock Stage", was composed by Nick Lutsko. Brielle Garcia then converted them down to run on the Sega Genesis.[1]

Upon booting the game, an orchestral version of "Live and Learn", used in trailers of the film, will play. Although, if the "Trailer?" option is unlocked, the song will not play.

Trivia[]

  • The artwork featured on the cartridge itself is loosely based on the box art for Sonic Adventure 2.
  • The "Trailer?" screen is an edited screenshot of the emblem screen from Sonic Adventure 2, with the words "new trailer" added to the ribbon and the date replacing the emblem count.
  • Shadow and Dark Rider are actually minifigures in the Unlock stage.
  • If someone were to insert the cartridge in the adapter slot on the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge, it would simply boot up Sonic & Knuckles.
  • Ben Schwartz, exclusively for the cartridge, has provided recording of the line "Hey, I said no cheat codes! ...Okay, just this once".[2]
  • This game marks the first time Agent Stone, Rachel, Randall Handel and Director Rockwell have appeared in a Sonic game, with the game also being Rockwell's first appearance in any media.
