The following is a list of scenes, dialogue, and other details that were present in trailers for the Sonic the Hedgehog film that are not in the final release.

Early script[]

Sonicmovietestscene

The photo of the recording session.

In commemoration of the North American launch of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, actor Ben Schwartz shared a photo on his Twitter account, which was taken on 12 July 2017. The photo in question is of an early recording session for a test scene, created in order to catch the interest of production studios.[1] In addition to the movie apparently using Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)'s logo as a placeholder, a small section of the third page of the script for the test scene can be read at the bottom:

Sonic the Hedgehog: Sorry I blasted you into a ditch. Bet you'd be really mad if I wasn't your best friend.
Tom: You're not my best friend.
Sonic the Hedgehog: Fine, best animal friend.

Deleted scenes[]

Sonic's childhood[]

SonicMovieCaliburnCameo

Caliburn as a cameo in a deleted scene.

In this scene, Sonic talks about his childhood and introduces Longclaw. Like in the final version of the film, they are both attacked by echidnas, except that Longclaw escapes with Sonic by flying through a Ring with him. Through it, Longclaw and Sonic arrive on Earth, where the latter grows up as the years pass. During their time there, Longclaw rescues Sonic from several mishaps and accident, and warns him not to interact with humans, claiming that they would want his power for themselves, like any other creature. She also shows Sonic the Mushroom Planet which he should go to if he is ever discovered. One day however, Longclaw begins to lose her strength. Though Sonic tries to keep her warm by the fire in his cave, Longclaw ultimately closes her eyes and passes away.

This scene was modified in the final version to be much shorter.

Crazy Carl[]

In this scene, Crazy Carl drives his van into a forest near Green Hills and sets up various traps for Sonic. At one point, he falls asleep over an unfinished puzzle that he was working on while waiting for Sonic, and when he wakes up, he notices that said puzzle has been completed. Carl starts looking around for Sonic, who promptly runs around him several times and disarms all of his traps. Ultimately, Carl finds himself caught in his own snare traps.

This scene is noticeably shortened in the final version of the film, covering only the final part.

Green Hills bar[]

In this scene, Tom visits a bar in Green Hills where he talks to the bartender about the latest events in the town. Carl then runs inside and begins telling Tom about his last encounter with the "Blue Devil". Two men who sit in the bar next to Tom and the bartender himself begins to mock Carl, who nevertheless defends his beliefs and tries to prove that Sonic really exists. He even shows them his drawing of him, but everyone starts laughing at it. Tom then offers Carl to take him home. On the way, Tom decides to talk to Carl about his health. Carl thanks Tom for his concern and compares Tom to the latter's father. Hearing this, Tom points out that the Wachowski family has always protected the people of Green Hills.

In the final version of the film, this scene is shortened to a brief segment where Carl shows a drawing of Sonic.

Rachel's house[]

In this scene, Sonic is playing with Ozzy and Jojo in Rachel's house when Tom comes in and asks to be alone with Sonic for a while. Tom proceeds to talk to Sonic about his power, which he had noticed during the chase on the highway. During their conversation, Tom learns from Sonic that his powers get out of control when he is forced to act under the influence of strong emotions. In turn, Tom explains to Sonic that people also struggle with their emotions. He also mentions to Sonic that with proper training, he would be able to control the powers associated with them. Afterwards, Sonic apologizes to Tom for being upset over Tom's decision to leave Green Hills. After the conversation, Tom pulls out the keys to Rachel's car and offers him a lift. The bound Rachel, however, warns him not to touch her car.

In the final version of the film, this scene is cut short and only contains the segment with Sonic watching Ozzy.

Rachel and Wade[]

Rachel's trashed car is returned to her house and is loaded with numerous fines. A furious Rachel proceeds to call the Green Hills Sheriff's Department to talk to Tom, but Wade answers the call instead. After listening to Rachel for a while, Wade does not believe her testimony, stating that Tom would never do anything like this. He also starts flirting with her and tries to get on a date with her, but to no avail, as an annoyed Rachel tells him to look for her home address himself.

This scene is completely cut out of the final version of the film.

Trailers[]

April 2019[]

  • A scene of Sonic, in the Hedgehog Cave, putting a cassette into a radio and turning it on.
  • A scene of Sonic on a long roadway where he kneels down and runs forward, creating an explosion of chaos energy.
  • A scene of Sonic, in a dark area with a single light, looking up with his hands on his hips and a stern face.

November 2019[]

  • The beginning of the second trailer shows Sonic, as a teenager, running around his island. In the actual film, he is only on his island as a baby, as he leaves his island to Earth when he was very young.

Others[]

  • In the Intercontinental Films version of the trailer, a teenage Sonic escapes to Earth and lands in a wheat field. In the final version of the film however, he appears on Earth as a child and ends up in a dark forest.

Unused dialogue[]

April 2019 trailer[]

  • When sonic was exercising and ready to run, Sonic says: Gotta Go Fast. Which was later used in Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and not used in the 1st film.
  • When Tom and Sonic are inside of the former's car, Tom says: "Okay pal, I want answers," to which Sonic responds with: "Basically, it looks like I'm gonna have to save your planet."
  • When Sonic is hiding inside of Tom's bag while he and Maddie are waiting for the elevator at the Transamerica Building, he says: "Smells like body spray and old ham sandwich."
  • When Robotnik shoots a bunch of missiles at Sonic atop the Transamerica Building and Sonic looks at his wrist while the missiles are comically frozen, and says: "Look at this, I took 9 million steps today."
  • When Sonic sees a smaller vehicle come out of the bigger one he just defeated, he says, "Uh oh." This is in both this and the following trailer, but not in the final film.

November 2019[]

  • Sonic's monologue at the beginning of the trailer is not used in the final film in any way.
  • When Sonic asks Tom to help him hide, he says: "If they steal my power, it could conquer the universe."
  • In the Piston Pit segment, Tom says "We gotta lay low" when telling Sonic to stay undercover at the bar.
  • In the Piston Pit segment, Sonic says "Let me show you how it's done," before he rapidly throws the darts at the target in the bar.
  • When Sonic says, "Road trip? Woohoo!" after getting inside Tom's car, Tom says in a despaired tone, "This can't be happening to me", the latter of which is cut.
  • Robotnik saying, "Why would you throw your life away for this silly little alien?", the dialogue is in the movie, but instead of "silly little alien?", Robotnik says "thing", and was said quite differently.

Other trailers[]

  • When Sonic enters Earth, he asks: "Where am I? What year is it? Is the Rock president?" However it was put into the scene where Sonic wakes up from the Smelling Salts.

Baby Sonic trailer[]

  • When presenting his flower to Longclaw, Baby Sonic can be heard laughing. In the final film he does not do this, although he laughs differently slightly before showing Longclaw the flower.

Other trailer changes[]

April 2019[]

  • When Dr. Robotnik cuts off Major Bennington after asking if he is in charge, him saying "Nope!" is much less exaggerated in the final film than it was in the first trailer.
  • In the first trailer, when Tom finds Sonic in his garage, Sonic is not holding anything in his hands when he says: "Uhh, meow?" When he was redesigned, the scene was changed to him holding a Ring and his bag in his hands.
    • In that same scene, Sonic says "Uhh, meow?" in a more sarcastic tone in both the first and second trailers, while in the final film, he says it in a more frightened tone. The scream he does afterwards when Tom screams is also different.
  • After destroying the Badnik on the highway, Sonic returns to Tom, but as the Badnik deploys its smaller Badnik unit from it, Sonic reacts anxiously. This scene was also used in the November 2019 trailer, but was changed in the final version of the film.
  • When Robotnik says: "No, but thank you for asking," after Sonic takes down his first vehicle, his pop-up screens around him look completely different between the first trailer and the final film.
  • The scene where the Eggpod is chasing Sonic in the desert, it had blue flames coming out of its engine instead of red.

November 2019[]

  • Many scenes of the second trailer show Sonic wearing his iconic red shoes, but in the final film, he does not get them until much later on from Jojo. Until that point, the shoes he wears in the film are green and ragged.
  • When Sonic caused the electro-magnetic wave, the next shot in trailer is Dr. Robotnik and Agent Stone staring at monitor which says "ANOMALY DETECTED", however, in the final cut, the latter shot was left in final cut, but "ANOMALY DETECTED" was removed.
  • Interestingly, Tom's tranquilizer gun in the second trailer has a red tip at the barrel, which is not present in either the April 2019 trailer or the final film.
  • In a similar vein, in the second trailer, when Robotnik tries to lick Sonic's fur but gets electrocuted, Agent Stone was edited out of standing next to him, when he was there in the April 2019 trailer, but was added back in the final film.
  • When Sonic takes down Robotnik's Badnik vehicle, Tom first asks him how he is not dead, then Sonic responds, "I have no idea!" while doing a little dance on the spot. In the final film, after Sonic takes it down, he celebrates by doing the floss, which is later followed by Tom asking the question and Sonic responding. The dance he did in the trailer is instead used when Jojo gives Sonic her red shoes.

Baby Sonic[]

  • Throughout the trailer, Baby Sonic is seen wearing smaller versions of his red shoes. In the final film, these are replaced with rough brown shoes.
