Sonic-Comic-Strip-10-10-1993

The first comic strip published on 10 October 1993. Written by Barrie Tomlinson and drawn by Richard Elson.

Sonic the Hedgehog, commonly referred to as the Sonic Sunday Strips, were serialized comic strips published by the UK newspaper News of the World from October 10, 1993 to April 1, 1995. All the comic strips were written by Barrie Tomlinson and drawn by Richard Elson and Sandy James.

Overview[]

Sonic the Hedgehog comic strips feature simple premises centering around the numerous encounters between Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Numerous Badniks and gameplay elements from Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 are included, along with Emerald Hill Folks and additional characters. Tails also appeared near the end of the comic. The comic strip was closely related to the British Sonic the Comic comic series published by Fleetway Editions that also ran during that time, with numerous elements, such as characters breaking the fourth wall, Robotnik's sudden appearance change and Robotnik using egg puns, originating from the UK comic series.

All comic strips were written by Barrie Tomlinson. The first fifty-one strips were drawn by Richard Elson, the main artist on Sonic the Comic.[1] Lots of Elson's later strips were also colored by John M Burns. Sandy James would take over Elson's position in October 1994 and held it until the end of the comic strip.

Between October 1993 โ€“ April 1995, over seventy comic strips were produced. The comic strip became quite obscure around the fan community for many years until August 2016, when a huge amount of comic strips were archived on the Tumblr blog going by the title "Sonic Sunday Strips".[1]
