'''Sonic the Hedgehog''' is the titular protagonist of the ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (film)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' film. He is an anthropomorphic hedgehog from another planet.

After being forced to flee to [[Earth (Paramount)|Earth]] to escape [[Echidna (Paramount)|those]] seeking his [[Chaos energy (Paramount)|power]], Sonic remained in hiding for ten years until he accidentally made his presence known, becoming the target of the sinister [[Doctor Robotnik (Paramount)|Dr. Robotnik]]. However, thanks to the help of [[Tom Wachowski]], Sonic managed to [[Mushroom Planet|banish]] Dr. Robotnik from Earth and establish himself a better life with the Wachowski family.

As time went on, Sonic tried beginning a superhero career with limited success. Regardless, his moment came when Dr. Robotnik returned with [[Knuckles the Echidna (Paramount)|Knuckles the Echidna]], seeking the [[Master Emerald (Paramount)|Master Emerald]]. Teaming up with his new ally [[Miles "Tails" Prower (Paramount)|Tails]], Sonic embarked on a globetrotting adventure to stop Dr. Robotnik, during which he befriended Knuckles. After defeating Dr. Robotnik, Sonic would form a [[Team Sonic (Paramount)|new order]] with Tails and Knuckles to safeguard the Master Emerald from evil.
When redesigning Sonic, the team started with Sonic's face. They compared the design shown in the initial trailer with the "Modern Sonic" design and tried to find a compromise between the two. A new rig also had to be created based on the new design and then everything would have to be reanimated using that rig. Although some old animations were able to be salvaged and reused, many had to be animated from scratch.<ref>https://sciencefiction.com/2019/11/29/sonic-the-hedgehog-animator-gives-details-about-the-redesign-process/</ref>

Between the first and second film, Sonic has a notable increase in height. In ''Sonic the Hedgehog'', his height only goes up to Tom's upper thigh, while in ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film)|Sonic the Hedgehog 2]]'', his height goes up to Tom's torso. According to Tyson Hesse, this was done to make Sonic's, alongside Tails' and Knuckles', height in ''Sonic the Hedgehog 2'' match how his main series counterpart's height is compared to [[human]] characters in the games.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://twitter.com/tyson_hesse/status/1516196226315608067|work=Twitter|title=Tyson Hesse on Twitter|quote='''Tyson Hesse''': He is taller, yes. ==History==

Sonic was born on an island which carried all the details of the famed [[Green Hill Zone]] from the video games, and was raised by the wise [[Longclaw]], who had warned Sonic not to show off his powers as there were those who coveted it and wanted it for themselves. One day, when Sonic returned home to Longclaw with a flower, he and Longclaw were attacked by a group of [[Echidna]] warriors who had seen Sonic and followed him back to Longclaw's hut. When Longclaw is wounded by one of their arrows, she realizes Sonic won't be safe with her anymore, and using a [[Ring (Paramount)|ring]], summons a portal for Sonic to escape through, giving him the bag of rings to use should he ever need to flee to protect himself from threats, before sending him through and making a heroic last stand to hold the echidna warriors off until the portal dissolves and Sonic is left stranded on the world Longclaw sent him to.

  +
==Appearance==
Fast forward ten years since then, and Sonic has edged out a new life for himself on [[Earth]] in the woods on the outskirts of [[Green Hills]], Montana, having made a cave where he spends most of his time reading DC comics of The Flash, using a washing machine as a treadmill, and generally traveling into town, but staying hidden, to spend time watching Green Hills Sheriff [[Tom Wachowski]] and his wife [[Maddie Wachowski|Maddie]], whom he nicknames "Donut Lord" and "Pretzel Lady" due to the yoga Maddie does and Tom talking to donuts, always thinking of the friends he could have, but remembering Longclaw's warning, has to keep his distance from them. However, he has drawn the attention of the town's local loony hermit, [[Crazy Carl]], who dubs him "The Blue Devil", and Sonic enjoys having fun with him when he tries to catch Sonic with his various traps.

Sonic is an anthropomorphic hedgehog with predominantly blue fur. He has small, triangular ears on the top of his head, seven quills that extend from the back of his head, with three on his back and a tail.<ref name="QuillCount">{{cite web|url=https://twitter.com/SatanicDpyro/status/1219822556045303808|title=VinMania on Twitter|date=21 January 2020|accessdate=7 February 2020|work=Twitter}}</ref> He also has green eyes, a black nose, and peach fur on his stomach and muzzle, with his muzzle fur extending to the center of his nose ridge. His eyes in particular glow blue whenever he utilizes his [[Chaos energy (Paramount)|chaos energy]] powers.

  +
In his younger years, Sonic sported a much shorter stature, complete with shorter limbs and quills, more dilated pupils, and a slightly more visible neck. Several months after his first bout with [[Doctor Robotnik (Paramount)|Dr. Robotnik]], Sonic had grown considerably larger in size, now almost a head taller than [[Ozzy]] sitting on his hind legs.
One night, after watching a baseball game earlier that evening, Sonic tries to play by himself, but when he looks at the empty bleachers, he becomes so upset that he begins running around the bases, faster and faster, his sadness changing to anger and frustration, until he builds up so much energy that it soon is unleashed in a powerful electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that blacks out the Pacific Northwest in the process.

  +
For attire, Sonic wears a pair of white gloves, a pair of white socks and red [[Puma]] Dare sneakers with white straps, white soles and yellow Puma tags. For prior footwear, he wore mismatched shoes that were completely worn out; a left greenish-gray sneaker and a right white trainer with tape around it, and when he was a baby, he wore a pair of basic, small, brown boots.
This, unfortunately, attracts the attention of the United States Department of Defense when word reaches their headquarters at the Pentagon in Arlington, and [[Commander Walters]], commanding general of the U.S. military, suggests calling on [[Doctor Robotnik (Paramount)|Doctor Robotnik]] to aid in finding the source of the EMP, despite concerns from the other generals about Robotnik's M.O. from previous encounters with him.

  +
==Personality==
When Sonic hears Robotnik's robots and the United States Army soldiers searching the woods for him, terrified of them finding him, and unable to escape from his cave to the next world he intended to head for if Earth was no longer safe for him when he hears the search dogs above, he flees to the Wachowskis' house to hide in their shed, but the commotion he makes inside alerts Tom, who comes in looking for raccoons, and finds Sonic, just as he was preparing to leave for the next world, and in fear, shoots Sonic with a tranquilizer. As Sonic begins to pass out from the sedative, he momentarily thinks of San Francisco from Tom's T-shirt, and opens a portal to the Transamerica Pyramid instead, dropping his ring bag through it before passing out completely. When he comes to, it is not long before he and Tom get into an argument, but when Robotnik arrives at the house, Tom hides Sonic in the attic while he deals with Robotnik. However, Sonic ends up downstairs to evade Robotnik's drones searching for him, and when Robotnik finds one of Sonic's quills and threatens to kill Tom if he doesn't tell him the truth in five seconds, in desperation, Sonic reveals himself, freaking out Robotnik long enough for Tom to cold-cock him before they fight off Robotnik's now hostile drone and flee in Tom's Toyota pickup.

  +
Sonic is adventurous, lively, fun-loving, and confident. A thrill-seeker who has a passion for enjoying life, he loves running fast and free, which much of his early childhood was spent doing. However, he is also quite reckless and quick to act before thinking. This tends to make him disobey authority at times, which has gotten himself and those around him into trouble more than once, such as when he used his super speed in the open despite being told by [[Longclaw]] not to do so, or when he went into the [[Piston Pit]] instead of staying in [[Tom Wachowski|Tom]]'s truck as he was told to.

  +
Sonic usually keeps a laid-back and easygoing demeanor. However, he is still a kid at heart, and is as such very energetic, extremely talkative, and always ready for new exploits. Owning to his lively spirit, Sonic is happy about going on adventures and is always very enthusiastic about trying new things and ready to see new places. Notably, when he thought he was leaving [[Earth (Paramount)|Earth]], this attitude was cranked up to eleven, as he wanted to soak up everything on Earth while he still had the time. Because he is so adventurous however, being constrained can often make him impatient and uneasy, which, at one time made him unable to resist the temptation to visit the Piston Pit.
At one point, Tom stops to let Sonic off to head for San Francisco on his own, but Tom's general suggestion of heading west leads to Sonic ending up in the Pacific Ocean before coming back and asking for Tom's help to get to San Francisco. With little other choice, Tom agrees to help Sonic, and they make their way to the City by the Bay, unaware of Robotnik now hunting for them, declaring Sonic an alien and Tom a domestic terrorist for protecting Sonic from Robotnik and the U.S. military.

  +
While no stranger to worry, Sonic is usually fearless and cool under pressure when pushed against the wall, although he can be a bit impatient in serious situations. As such, he is ready to talk back to intimidating [[Roadhouse Thug|thugs]] and would usually banter with [[Doctor Robotnik (Paramount)|Dr. Robotnik]] during their violent encounters. This confidence in the face of dangers has given Sonic a mischievous sense of humor; he enjoys toying with his opponents, whether it is by verbally teasing or taunting his foes, or by playing pranks or overwhelming them using his super speed. Sonic also tends to give people nicknames, such as calling Tom "Donut Lord", [[Maddie Wachowski|Maddie]] "Pretzel Lady", and Dr. Robotnik "Eggman", and enjoys making jokes and pretending to be other people.
Stopping at a biker bar, Sonic soon learns about creating a bucket list of things to do before you die, or in Sonic's case, leave Earth for another world, and after causing a bar brawl that Sonic easily handles in supersonic speed mode, he and Tom flee to stop at a motel for the night, where Tom begins to show some affection and friendship with Sonic when he tucks him in for the night.

  +
Possessing a big ego that stems from his positive attitude, Sonic always tries to be positive, even when he does not want to be, and thinks he can get out of nearly any problem with his powers. This state of mind gives him a cocky attitude, a high opinion about himself, and prompts him to crack jokes in even the worst of situations. His cockiness also extends to pride in his appearance, as he occasionally brags about how good-looking he thinks he is. However, Sonic's ego is not to be confused with pride or arrogance, as Sonic does not see himself as more important than others. In fact, Sonic is very benevolent and shows a lot of friendliness towards most living things he comes in contact with; after saving a turtle from becoming roadkill, Sonic took for a ride so it could experience being fast for a change, although he accidentally traumatized it in the process. A similar instance happened when he met [[Ozzy]] despite being miffed that Ozzy held the position as Tom's best friend. Sonic similarly puts others before himself, refusing to put others in danger because of himself, and will risk his life to save innocent people, friends, or even animals. Even when it comes to his enemies, Sonic is willing to rescue them when they face an otherwise unfortunate fate or injury.<ref name="StH2TOMP1" />
The next day, they soon find that Robotnik has caught up to them when he sends a large tank drone after them on the highway, and despite Sonic and Tom's best efforts, the drone proves persistent in stopping them, culminating in a small, helicopter drone that emerges from the wreckage of the larger ones slicing off the roof of the cab of Tom's pickup before Sonic breaks it in half, only for its core to become a powerful sticky bomb that leaves Sonic severely wounded and unconscious when it detonates. Terrified for Sonic's well-being, Tom takes him to Maddie, who was visiting her sister and niece at that time in San Francisco, who manages to revive him. While there, Sonic is granted a gift from Tom and Maddie's niece [[Jojo]] in the form of new shoes to replace his worn-out ones. With the new shoes, and Maddie joining Tom in helping Sonic out, they travel to the Transamerica Pyramid, where Tom is able to gain access to the roof due to his position as a law enforcement officer, and Sonic recovers his ring bag.

However, before he can leave for the next world and leave Tom, Maddie, and Earth behind, he is confronted once more by Robotnik, now flying the [[Prototype]] with an army of his drones with him. Sonic, in order to save Tom and Maddie's lives, pushes them off the building before using his supersonic speed to take out Robotnik's drones and also save them, but using the quill he captured earlier back at Tom's house, Robotnik is able to enter supersonic speed himself and nearly ruin Sonic's rescue attempt. Sonic manages to get Tom and Maddie, transported by ring portal, safely back to Green Hills, before dealing with Robotnik and the Prototype, having their chase pass through Paris, the Great Wall of China, and the Great Pyramids of Egypt, before Sonic attempts to escape back to Green Hills, but Robotnik manages to land a powerful hit just as Sonic is about to enter the portal, causing Sonic to be mortally wounded and left at Robotnik's mercy as they return to Green Hills and Robotnik prepares to take Sonic back to be dissected to learn the secrets of his powers. Tom tries to protect Sonic by attacking Robotnik himself, but is quickly overpowered. However, the people of Green Hills rally to Tom's aid, angry at Robotnik for attacking their Sheriff and Sonic, and when Tom declares Sonic his friend, Sonic gains a miraculous second wind, and soon begins to glow with that same power that gave away his location previously, but now in full control of it, intending not to run, but to protect his friends, and unleashes his fury on the Prototype, severely damaging it before Tom and Sonic open a portal to the world Sonic intended to travel to previously, but deciding Earth is his home now, with a final, powerful strike, Sonic destroys the Prototype and sends both its remains and Robotnik through the portal, never to threaten anyone again.

  +
After living in self-imposed exile on [[Earth (Paramount)|Earth]] for 10 years, Sonic became extremely lonely and longed to make connections with real friends, with one of the things on his bucket list being to make a real friend. Fortunately, he eventually found a connection in the Wachowski family, and by extension, the inhabitants of [[Green Hills]]. Due to his loneliness, Sonic has also developed a habit of talking to himself or inanimate objects when he has no one else to talk to, which is difficult due to his talkative nature, or when he feels alone.<ref name="StH2TOMP1" /> Despite his quirks, Sonic is clever and quick-thinking, as shown by him plucking off one of his quills to grab a [[Ring (Paramount)|Ring]] when it was just out of his reach or taking advantage of Dr. Robotnik's obsessive hatred of him to distract him with taunts. Maddie has also described Sonic as a “smart kid”.

  +
Having spent much of his life on Earth, Sonic has taken a great interest in Earth's culture, and has picked up many interests and hobbies, such as baseball, playing guitar, watching action movies, keeping tabs on celebrities, and reading comic books. However, Sonic's hobbies, combined with his lack of experience dealing with humans, gives him a slightly unrealistic view of the world and causes him to occasionally act irrationally, such as mimicking the characters in ''[[Wikipedia:Speed (1994 film)|Speed]]'' by starting a fight with the people in the Piston Pit. Sonic also has a habit of mimicking heroes from fictional stories, such as comic books and detective movies.
Some time later, Tom and Maddie reveal to Sonic that they transferred all his stuff from his cave to their attic, making it up so Sonic can use it as his room and live with them from now on, much to his joy. Commander Walters soon stops by himself to reveal to Tom and Maddie that any and all information about recent events regarding Sonic and Robotnik have been erased by authority of the U.S. government, and to keep Tom and Maddie quiet about it, offers them an Olive Garden gift card as thanks. Sonic soon settles into his new life living in Green Hills with Tom and Maddie, now among friends at last, proving that his earlier fears and warning from Longclaw were no longer needed.

{{Expansion}}

  +
Sonic is highly protective of his powers. After losing Longclaw because others sought his powers, a traumatized Sonic was willing to spend years running away and living in hiding, much to his own frustration and sadness, so that no one would discover him and try to steal his powers. During the climax of his first battle against Dr. Robotnik however, upon realizing that he had people on Earth who cared about him, he resolved to use them to protect his friends.
==Game appearances==

===''Sonic Dash''===

In promotion of the film, Sonic makes an appearance as a playable character in ''[[Sonic Dash]]'' in two incarnations; "Teen Sonic" and "Baby Sonic". In this game, both of these characters can be unlocked after participating in their respective events.

  +
Sonic's newfound devotion to protecting others also opened his eyes to the superhero lifestyle, which he has gained a taste for due to the excitement it provides. As such, he strives towards becoming a hero in his own right, which is exemplified in the superhero nicknames he comes up for himself. While he sees his heroics as chances to get some thrills in his otherwise peaceful lifestyle, Sonic is nonetheless genuinely motivated by a strong desire to use his powers for good and help people out with them. However, his inexperience as a hero prompts him to act rather reckless and rush into chances to prove himself without an actual plan in mind.<ref name="StH2TOMP1" />
===''Sonic Forces: Speed Battle''===

In promotion of the film, Sonic makes an appearance as a playable character in ''[[Sonic Forces: Speed Battle]]'' under the name "Teen Sonic". He was added to the game's roster in the version 2.16.0 update. He has the following stats in gameplay:

  +
Despite his positive demeanor, however, Sonic possesses something of a vengeful side, which manifests itself when his loved ones are in danger; a prime example being during the climax of the fight for the Master Emerald: after absorbing the Chaos Emeralds and transforming into Super Sonic, rather than quipping or taunting Dr. Robotnik during their fight like he did before, Sonic simply glared at him in unbridled fury and quickly took down his mech with brutal, merciless efficiency before toppling it and supposedly sending the doctor to his demise to ensure he never threatened Sonic, his adoptive family, or the Earth ever again.

==Powers and abilities==
On 7 February 2020, Sonic was re-released as "Baby Sonic", a variant character of Sonic as the younger incarnation of himself as seen in the film, as a part of the 2.16.0 update. This character has the following stats in gameplay:

  +
[[File:SonicMovieMotelScreenshot17.jpg|thumb|225px|Sonic moving at super speed and appearing to be in several places at once, from [[Sonic the Hedgehog (film)|''Sonic the Hedgehog'' (film)]]]]
  +
Sonic possesses the power to move to incredible speed. [[Miles "Tails" Prower (Paramount)|Tails]] has even stated that Sonic is the fastest creature in the galaxy. Due to such speed, he can move fast enough to create blurry afterimages that appear in several places at once to the human eye, run over walls, and during his fight with Dr. Robotnik in Egypt, Sonic can even generate sand tornadoes by running around in circles to disrupt Dr. Robotnik's visual contact. He can even reach such speeds that his entire surroundings either freeze or slow down considerably from his perspective; even bullets and missiles appear to come to a near stand-still to him as shown. As a side-effect of this ability, Sonic also has a super-fast pulse rate, even while unconscious. Sonic is even capable of thinking and processing information at super speed, being capable of reading through a meter-high stack of The Flash comics in about a second.

  +
As an extraterrestrial, Sonic boasts high durability, having survived a near point-blank explosion caused by one of Dr. Robotnik's [[Badnik (Paramount)|Badniks]] without any notable injuries, and taking direct punches from even [[Knuckles the Echidna (Paramount)|Knuckles]] that send him flying through walls while retaining consciousness. Sonic is also quite strong, being able to catch and launch back missiles with equivalent force, effortlessly catch a full-grown human from multiple stories up,<ref name="StH2TOMP1" /> and managed to barely lift an enormous stone pillar with help from Knuckles.

Sonic's core offensive maneuver is a [[Spin Attack (Paramount)|Spin Attack]], a technique where he curls into a concussive ball and directs himself at his targets. With it, Sonic can launch a Spin Attack that can shred or burrow through just about any substance given enough speed and hit with enough force to blow apart a section of one of [[Doctor Robotnik (Paramount)|Dr. Robotnik]]'s Badnik tanks and smash Knuckles deep into solid rock with a single impact. Adept in its usage, Sonic can utilize it for both grounded and aerial maneuvers or just soft landings, and also can use a reeved-up variants of his Spin Attack: the [[Spin Dash (Paramount)|Spin Dash]].
==Personality==

Sonic is adventurous, cheeky, lively, fun-loving, and confident. He is a thrill-seeker who enjoys being able to go fast and live freely, which much of his early childhood was spent doing. However, this carefree nature can land him in trouble, as shown when he used his powers in the open despite being told to keep them hidden, allowing an echidna tribe to ambush him and [[Longclaw]]. He is mostly fearless and cool under pressure, mocking and bantering with [[Doctor Robotnik (Paramount)|Dr. Robotnik]] during their encounters.

  +
His spin attack aside, Sonic has some skills in hand-to-hand combat, being able to keep up and adapt to even Knuckles, who is renowned as the most dangerous warrior in the galaxy, in close combat. However, Sonic's fighting prowess is rather unrefined and crude, as he has undergone no forms of combat training for his entire life. Knuckles has even deemed him unskilled and untrained in the field of combat, but regardless, in close combat, Sonic is extremely self-taught, and highly adept in combat skills during his battle against Robotnik in his [[Giant Eggman Robot]] when he's shown to take out the drones.
After being forced to flee his [[Sonic's world (Paramount)|world]] and live on Earth for ten years, Sonic became extremely lonely, as he was never able to interact with people lest they attempt to take his powers. This caused him to long for a real friend to connect with (as highlighted in the bucket list he creates), which he eventually found in the form of [[Tom Wachowski]], who Sonic had up to then dubbed the "Donut Lord". The two quickly bond during their journey to recover Sonic's lost [[Ring (Paramount)|ring]]s, where Sonic gains a better understanding of life on Earth and is thrilled to finally have a friend.

[[File:SonicTVSpot4.png|thumb|225px|left|Sonic in control of his chaos energy, from [[Sonic the Hedgehog (film)|''Sonic the Hedgehog'' (film)]]]]
Sonic is highly protective of his powers, being willing to spend years running away and living in hiding so that no one would discover or try to steal them. At the climax of his battle against Robotnik, however, he resolves to use them to protect his friends.

  +
Another aspect of Sonic's power is his ability to generate [[Chaos energy (Paramount)|chaos energy]]. This power is linked to his emotional state. If he feels extreme emotions, Sonic will start generating blue energy that causes his quills and eyes to glow blue and his body to unleash surges of energy akin to lightning bolts. These energies are so vast that, should Sonic release this energy, he can unleash an electromagnetic pulse that can cover areas as large as the entire Pacific Northwest or reach otherwise inhabited planets across the galaxy. Conversely, should Sonic harness these energies for himself, they seem to amplify his speed, strength and spin attack, providing the latter with enough power to hit the [[Eggpod (Paramount)|Eggpod]] hard enough to send it flying in the opposite direction, break down a bank vault's sealed door,<ref name="StH2TOMP1" /> and clash with the similarly charged Knuckles. If Sonic's quills are separated from him, they will retain some of the energy he creates and react to Sonic's emotional state from a distance; the energy output from these quills is astronomical, with even one of them possessing unlimited power. Sonic can also drain this power from his separated quills by literally pulling the energy out of them, although they will eventually regain their power. Initially, Sonic had no control of the energies he could generate, being capable of only summoning them during moments of extreme stress and anger. During his clash with [[Doctor Robotnik (Paramount)|Dr. Robotnik]] in [[Green Hills]], however, Sonic gained complete control over his energy-based power, allowing him to properly harness it.

  +
Sonic also possesses good survival skills, able to survive living alone in the wild on [[Earth (Paramount)|Earth]] for ten years. Sonic is a capable leader as well, able to inspire others and come up with good battle strategies.
==Powers and abilities==

[[file:SonicMovieTrailer2 64.png|thumb|Sonic in his ball-state.]]

Sonic has the ability to run at high speeds that exceed 760 miles per hour; additionally, as noted by Maddie, his super speed causes him to have a constantly high pulse rate (even when unconscious). Sonic can move so fast that other moving objects can appear still from his perspective, as well as moving fast enough to appear as if he is in multiple places at once to the human eye. In addition to this, Sonic can curl up into a ball as a protective mechanism to attack others with his speed or create soft landings for himself (he also once used this ability in an attempt to hide from Robotnik's drones by hiding next to some sports balls in Tom's house). Sonic also has an unknown power that seems to tie with his emotions: if he becomes highly stressed, or has some sort of rise in his emotions, he starts to emit bright blue bio-electrical energy. If he releases this energy, Sonic is capable of creating an EMP burst, which knocked out all the power across the Pacific Northwest, or amplifying his spin dash. It is apparent that Sonic is able to draw out this power from his quills, as when he battled Dr. Robotnik in the climax of the film he temporarily regained the power of his stolen quill to use it against the doctor.

===Super Sonic===
Additionally, Sonic is shown to have a high level of durability, as seen when he survived a near point-blank explosion from one of Robotnik's drones, and was simply rendered unconscious.

By harnessing the power of the 7 [[Chaos Emerald (Paramount)|Chaos Emeralds]], Sonic can transform into '''Super Sonic'''. Possessing god-like powers in this state, all of Sonic's abilities far surpass his normal ones. He is also able to fly and can turn thoughts into reality, such as conjuring up [[Chili dog (Paramount)|chili dogs]].

+
==Weaknesses==
  +
While Sonic's super speed is his greatest asset, it can also be his greatest weakness in certain situations; if he can't get good traction when trying to come to a stop, he can risk tumbling out of control. He also had little to no control over his chaos energy powers to begin with, which would result in him creating unintended energy surges at inopportune times, even as powerful as an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). However, he has since overcome this weakness after gaining control over this ability.
On December 10 2018, a teaser poster featuring a silhouette Sonic was released.<ref name=":1" >{{cite web |url=https://ie.ign.com/articles/2018/12/10/sonic-the-hedgehog-movie-first-look-check-out-the-exclusive-official-poster |title=Sonic The Hedgehog Movie First Look: Check Out the Exclusive Official Poster |publisher=IGN |first=Terri |last=Schwartz |date=10 December 2018 |accessdate=10 December 2018 }}</ref> The design was likened to those from the 2019 video game film adaptation, ''[[Wikipedia:Pokémon: Detective Pikachu|Pokémon: Detective Pikachu]]''.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.businessinsider.com/fans-think-the-sonic-the-hedgehog-movie-poster-is-awful-2018-12 |title=A 'Sonic the Hedgehog' movie is on the way, but fans think his new design looks awful |last=Webb |first=Kevin |work=Business Insider |accessdate=13 December 2018 |date=10 December 2018 }}</ref> The reveal of Sonic's redesign received mostly negative responses from critics and fans alike.<ref>{{cite web |last=Chalk |first=Andy |title=The first Sonic the Hedgehog live action movie poster is creepy as hell |url=https://www.pcgamer.com/the-first-sonic-the-hedgehog-live-action-movie-poster-is-creepy-as-hell/ |work=PC Gamer |publisher=PC Gamer |accessdate=12 December 2018 |date=10 December 2018}}</ref><ref name=":1" /> [[Naoto Ohshima]], the original designer of Sonic, likewise expressed surprise at the design.<ref>{{Cite web |url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/olliebarder/2018/12/13/the-original-creators-behind-sonic-the-hedgehog-react-to-the-new-live-action-movie-reveal/ |title=The Original Creators Behind 'Sonic The Hedgehog' React To The New Live-Action Movie Reveal |last=Barder |first=Ollie |work=Forbes |accessdate=13 December 2018}}</ref>

While his chaos energy can bolster it by a large factor, Sonic at least initially had very poor upper body strength, as he was unable to break a bottle against a bar patron's head with numerous attempts, and a subsequent, lengthy series of punches against said bar patron did not illicit even a flinching response. However, by the time of fighting Knuckles in the Labyrinth, his strength seems to have improved, allowing him to adequately contend with the echidna.
On 5 March 2019, a first view in Sonic's full design was revealed, which the fans gave mixed reactions. [[Yuji Naka]], former head of [[Sonic Team]], explained on Twitter what he thought about it: "I feel like, with this Sonic here, visually, the important thing to look at is the head and body ratio and the roundness of the abdomen. I wonder if they couldn't have balanced them a little bit better...These images of Sonic aren't coming officially from the movie-making source; I think it's possible they're being strategically leaked, though getting people talking about it 'because it's bad' can't be good for Sonic's existing IP." He continued, "Well, there's also the possibility that this is fan-made, though even so, I'd still prefer it if they'd put some gloves on him. Seeing him bare-handed is quite a shock."<ref>{{Cite web |url=https://kotaku.com/the-internet-and-sonics-creator-react-to-sonics-movie-1833070881 |title=The Internet, And Sonic's Creator, React To Sonic's Movie Design |date=05 March 2019 |first=Gita Jackson |work=Kotaku |accessdate=02 May 2019}}</ref>

Suffering from slight aquaphobia, Sonic is incapable of swimming and sinks in deep water, barely able to keep himself buoyant. While he is able to bypass this weakness somewhat by running along the surface of water at high speed, he needs to stay at maximum speed or risk sinking. He also has trouble maintain the speed needed to stay buoyant this way in rough waters.
On 30 April 2019, the first official trailer for the film was released, as well as its official poster. The trailer received mixed-to-negative reactions from the fans and media, mostly because of Sonic's humanoid looking design, which has also been described as adjacent to the [[wikipedia:Uncanny Valley|uncanny valley]].<ref>{{Cite web |url=https://www.cartoonbrew.com/feature-film/the-new-sonic-the-hedgehog-trailer-doesnt-get-the-reaction-paramount-hoped-for-173426.html |title=The New ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Trailer Doesn’t Get The Reaction Paramount Hoped For |work=CartoonBrew |date=30 April 2019 |accessdate=3 May 2019 }}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.newsweek.com/sonic-hedgehog-movie-trailer-bad-1409981|title=‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Movie Trailer Is No Gangster’s Paradise|author=Steven Asarch|website=Newsweek|date=30 April 2019 |accessdate=9 May 2019 }}</ref> On 2 May 2019, it was announced by [[Jeff Fowler]] that Sonic would receive a redesign after receiving criticism on the first trailer release.<ref name="TheChange">{{Cite web |url=https://twitter.com/fowltown/status/1124056098925944832 |title=Jeff Fowler on Twitter |work=Twitter |date=2 May 2019 |accessdate=2 May 2019 }}</ref>

Sonic is also very cocky at times, and often makes situations worse, like when he started a bar fight when attempting to knock out the [[Roadhouse Thug]] with a bottle by mimicking an action movie.
A second trailer revealing the redesigned Sonic was released on 12 November 2019.<ref>https://collider.com/new-sonic-the-hedgehog-trailer-new-design/</ref> The trailer received far more positive responses, with many praising Sonic's new design. [[File:SonicMovieEndofBabySonicFlashback2.jpg|thumb|225px|left|Sonic parting ways with Longclaw, from [[Sonic the Hedgehog (film)|''Sonic the Hedgehog'' (film)]]]]
Sonic's first parental figure was Longclaw, as she took care of him in his early youth. Sonic, however, did not conceal his powers despite her warnings. This culminated in an echidna tribe attacking them after Sonic used his powers to give Longclaw a special flower. When Longclaw told him he had to leave [[Sonic's world (Paramount)|their world]], Sonic was distraught and didn't want to leave her. He ran to help Longclaw fight back the tribe, but the ring closed before he could get through. Sonic would listen to Longclaw's advice and remain hidden for 10 years and attempt to leave earth after he was discovered. He often takes her words to heart and used to think he would be alone forever.

Sonic's first parental figure was [[Longclaw]], who served as both his foster mother and mentor, and took care of him in his early youth. Sonic evidently cared very much about Longclaw and reciprocated her love for him, having run across [[Sonic's island|his island]] in the open just to bring her a flower. However, he did not always listen to Longclaw's warnings, namely by using his powers in the open despite being told by Longclaw to keep them concealed, certain that he was too fast to be noticed. This, unfortunately, led to the [[Echidna (Paramount)|echidna]] tribe attacking their home and forcing Sonic to flee to [[Earth (Paramount)|Earth]] without Longclaw, something which Sonic was distraught about, as he did not want to part ways from her. Even then complying to Longclaw's orders, Sonic was unwilling to leave her, as he attempted to come to her rescue when she made her stand against the echidna tribe, only for the [[Ring (Paramount)|Ring]] portal between them to close up.
  +
  +
The loss of Longclaw had a profound impact on Sonic, traumatizing him with the knowledge of what could happen to those close to him if they got caught up in the struggle for his powers. As such, Sonic took Longclaw's last instructions to heart by staying in hiding on Earth for the next ten years and attempting to leave Earth after he was discovered there despite wanting to stay on Earth and hating his [[Mushroom Planet|next hideout]]. Over the course of the hunt for the Rings he needed to leave Earth however, Sonic began wondering if Longclaw was wrong about him having a real life with friends on Earth. Eventually though, Sonic chose to stay on Earth with the Wachowskis, with no disrespect to Longclaw.

These days, Sonic still keeps mementoes from Longclaw, including a feather of hers, which tend to make him remember Longclaw with both fondness and sadness.

Sonic had a friendly relationship with Tom even before they formally meet. Sonic would refer to him as "Donut Lord", since Tom talked to doughnuts and ate them "if they didn't listen". He saw Tom as one of the best people in [[Green Hills]]. Their first encounter, though, was not friendly as Tom shot Sonic with a bear tranquilizer. This caused him to miss-throw his ring and drop his bag of rings in [[San Francisco]]. Sonic blamed him for losing his rings and pleaded for his help to get them back.

Sonic saw [[Tom Wachowski]] as a role model even before they formally met, having formed his opinion of Tom by spying on him from a distance. Sonic would refer to him as "Donut Lord", since Tom talked to doughnuts and ate them "''if they [got] out of line''". He likewise saw Tom as one of the best people in [[Green Hills]] given how he defended "''all creatures big and small''". Sonic also tried to involve himself in Tom's life from a distance, such as by spying on his and [[Maddie Wachowski|Maddie]]'s movie nights together. Sonic's longing to be a part of Tom's life and his family proved to be so great that he considered himself a part of his family through his spying and eavesdropping in order to deny his own loneliness. Regardless, Sonic trusted Tom to some degree, having gone to Tom's garage during his escape from the [[United States Army]] because he was the only one, he could think of.
  +
  +
When Sonic and Tom finally met each other face to face, their reaction was far from friendly, with both of them screaming in shock upon seeing each other's reaction and Tom shooting Sonic with a bear tranquilizer. This caused Sonic to accidentally send the [[Ring (Paramount)|Rings]] he needed to leave [[Earth (Paramount)|Earth]] to [[San Francisco]], causing Sonic to blame Tom for his entrapment on Earth. Nonetheless, Sonic depended on Tom to stay safe from the [[United States (Paramount)|United States]] operative, [[Doctor Robotnik (Paramount)|Dr. Robotnik]]. Sonic was likewise concerned about Tom's safety, prompting him to reveal himself to Dr. Robotnik in order keep Dr. Robotnik from killing him. At first, Tom helped Sonic escape Dr. Robotnik, but he refused to accompany him in the long run. Sonic, however, persuaded Tom to help him find his Rings, and the two set out on their quest. However, Sonic did not care too much about the whole situation and was even excited about finally being able to spend time with Tom.
  +
  +
During their trip to San Francisco, Sonic was still friendly to Tom and acted cool despite their predicament. However, Sonic would irritate Tom with his nonchalance and confidence, although it was soon revealed that he just wanted to make a real friend before leaving Earth. Sonic was likewise annoyed by Tom's attempts to keep him concealed and would disobey his orders to stay hidden. However, Sonic eventually won over Tom with his childish charm and humanity of his own, causing them to bond over a night at the [[Piston Pit]] where Sonic was happy for Tom's help in crossing things off his bucket list. During the fight in the bar, he expressed concern about seeing Tom being cornered by thugs and so rushed to his aid. They grew further closer as Sonic admitted his worries and vulnerabilities about leaving Earth for the Mushroom Planet to Tom. The next day, Sonic presumptuously began to see each other as friends, even though Tom said he liked his dog [[Ozzy]] more than him. However, Sonic's relationship with Tom got strained when he got personally offended over how Tom was leaving Green Hills for the [[San Francisco Police Department]], and could not understand why he was leaving behind his home and those he knew when he himself had been forced away from his home and his loved ones. However, he eventually came to understand his decision. Sonic also began to see Tom as a protector after he helped him recover from an explosion.

  +
Sonic later returned the favor by protecting Tom from Dr. Robotnik, and together they banished the doctor to the Mushroom Planet. By this point, Sonic saw Tom as the first friend he had been missing his entire life. Also, when Tom moved Sonic's belongings from his cave to the Wachowski house's attic, Sonic was overjoyed and felt like a member of the Wachowski family.

As time went on, Sonic and Tom's relationship would evolve from a friendship to a form of son-and-father relationship, with Tom trying to be a supporting presence to Sonic by reminding him that the time will eventually come for him to use the incredible powers he possesses, but are not allowed to use in public.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbDuCjo9ENE|title=Sonic the Hedgehog 2's Cast on the Little Details Fans Will Love <nowiki>|</nowiki> IGN Fan Fest 2022|work=YouTube|publisher=[[Wikipedia:IGN|IGN]]|date=20 February 2022|accessdate=22 February 2022}}</ref> He would also try to teach him about responsibility and true heroism in order to steer him in the right direction. Sonic first met [[Miles "Tails" Prower (Paramount)|Tails]] after the latter saved him from [[Knuckles the Echidna (Paramount)|Knuckles]]. Initially, Sonic did not trust Tails due to having just met him, but faced with the threat of Knuckles and [[Doctor Robotnik (Paramount)|Dr. Robotnik]], he saw he had little choice in the matter and so he accepted his help. However, Sonic soon became convinced of Tails' good intentions and helpfulness, which prompted him to accepting him as his ally. When Sonic saw Tails felt unsure about coming along on his quest for the [[Master Emerald (Paramount)|Master Emerald]], he won him over by promising to protect him with an unbreakable promise. During their subsequent journey in [[Siberia (Paramount)|Siberia]], Sonic grew slightly uncomfortable upon hearing that Tails had spent the past 8 months spying on him, though the two grew a close bond after they won a dance fight and Sonic learned of how he had become Tails' hero after his first victory over Dr. Robotnik in [[Green Hills]] and admitted that he was good after showing profound knowledge about his preferences. He also learned about how Tails was insecure about his two tails, while also ensuring him that it was not a bad thing.
  +
  +
Unlike most others, whom he would show an occasional attitude towards, Sonic would remain consistently kind towards Tails. Even when he learned that Tails had been stalking him with his gadgets, he was impressed instead of being disturbed. After Tails was later attacked and knocked unconscious by Dr. Robotnik, Sonic put aside his current concerns and focused solely on ensuring Tails' well-being and protecting him. He was very worried when Tails did not wake up, even when the [[Guardian Units of Nations (Paramount)|G.U.N.]] agents locked both of them away. After being rescued by Maddie, Sonic blamed himself for putting Tails in danger, which prompted him to go find the Master Emerald alone. After Tails arrived in the [[Tornado (Paramount)|Tornado]] to pick him up, Sonic was relieved that he was alright and impressed that he was able to find him again. Later, during their fight with Dr. Robotnik's [[Giant Eggman Robot]], Sonic and Tails would show close cooperation in battle while at the same time being open to each other's suggestions and ideas. Since then, the two of them have remained good friends, bonded by their oath to guard the Master Emerald with Knuckles, to the point of creating a brotherly bond.

Sonic's relationship with [[Knuckles the Echidna (Paramount)|Knuckles the Echidna]] did not get off to a good start. Sonic in particular would show slight distaste towards Knuckles due to his association with the [[Echidna (Paramount)|Echidna]], who ruined his childhood by separating him from [[Longclaw]] and getting him banished from [[Mobius (Paramount)|his home]]. Despite this, Sonic never showed personal hatred towards Knuckles, and would merely act in self-defense during their initial clashes.

Initially, Sonic saw Knuckles as a serious threat, who was a more experienced fighter and better suited for combat than himself, whenever he turned up. As time when on though, Sonic would get over his fear and begin seeing Knuckles as more of an annoyance while taunting his with mocking jokes about his temper and reputation. However, the two began to sympathize with each other after learning that they both lost the only people they considered to be their families due to the [[owl]]s and the echidnas' feud, until [[Miles "Tails" Prower (Paramount)|Tails]] arrived and tried to refrain Knuckles, inadvertently causing him to think that Sonic was lying. When they met again in the temple holding the [[Master Emerald (Paramount)|Master Emerald]], Sonic stopped pulling his punches and began to brutally attack Knuckles, although with reluctancy since Knuckles forced his hand.

Despite the fact that Knuckles repeatedly tried to kill Sonic and treating him with disrespect, Sonic could ultimately not bring himself to treat Knuckles as a real enemy, and would even save him when he was about to drown. In return, Knuckles saved Sonic from drowning as well. The two would then bond after Sonic explained why he did not let Knuckles die even though he had tried to kill him several times, which got Knuckles to open up and convince him of Sonic's honor and heroism. Sonic was later shown to trust Knuckles as a friend from then on, as he affirmed to Tails that he was not a bad guy, but just "mixed up". When later fighting the [[Giant Eggman Robot]], Sonic got Knuckles to acknowledge him as a brave and noble warrior when he offered to be bait for Dr. Robotnik. Since then, the two of them have remained good friends, bonded by their oath to guard the Master Emerald with Tails and a friendly rivalry. Despite this, he is shown to be exasperated by Knuckles' naivety and boastful attitude, as demonstrated when they played a round of baseball together.

As his arch enemy, Sonic sees [[Doctor Robotnik (Paramount)|Dr. Robotnik]] as a psychotic madman who only wants to use his power for his own gains and destroy him and his foster family. Despite this, Sonic would tease the doctor by calling him "Eggman" as a reference to his egg-shaped [[Badnik (Paramount)|Badniks]] and mocking his looks.
  +
  +
Sonic first met Dr. Robotnik when he came to the house of [[Tom Wachowski]], who was hiding him, and threatened to kill Tom if he did not tell where Sonic was. Rather than letting Tom pay the price, Sonic revealed himself to Dr. Robotnik to save Tom. Dr. Robotnik, in turn, was shocked by the sight of Sonic, allowing Tom to knock him out, and him and Sonic to escape him. One of Sonic's primary reasons for leaving [[Earth (Paramount)|Earth]] after that was to protect those knowing of his existence, namely Tom and [[Maddie Wachowski|Maddie]], from Dr. Robotnik's wrath. During their later confrontation at the [[Transamerica Pyramid]], Sonic had developed a more fearless attitude towards Dr. Robotnik, which he showed by taunting him and boasting confidently that the doctor would never be able to catch him. However, when Dr. Robotnik proved himself a threat with his [[Eggpod (Paramount)|Eggpod]] vehicle, Sonic took the doctor more seriously, and would even begin to show slight fear of him after finding himself unable to escape him and his Eggpod. After resolving to use his power to protect his friends instead of running away however, Sonic faced Dr. Robotnik head-on, eventually defeating him and banishing him to the [[Mushroom Planet]] with Tom's aid.

  +
When Dr. Robotnik returned, Sonic would treat the doctor with even more aggression, going as far as to attempt to attack him as he threatened his loves ones from his foster family. Despite this, Sonic would remain cheeky towards Dr. Robotnik, namely by mocking his new look, especially by pointing out his more unkept mustache. As Sonic kept returning to ruin Dr. Robotnik's plans though, he would eventually become Dr. Robotnik's greatest weak spot, something which Sonic recognized and used to his advantage when fighting Dr. Robotnik and his [[Giant Eggman Robot]]. Sonic's spite towards Dr. Robotnik further intensified after he nearly killed the Wachowskis, though he kept himself calm enough to give Dr. Robotnik the option to surrender. When Dr. Robotnik failed to do that though, Sonic destroyed the Giant Eggman Robot and left him to fall with it.
Sonic would tease the the doctor by calling him "Eggman" and making fun of his looks. However, there were a few times Sonic was scared of him, such as when Robotnik threatened Tom or when his [[Prototype]] managed to keep up with him.

This is my power, and I'm not using it to run away anymore. I'm using it to protect... my... friends!

— Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog (film)

Sonic the Hedgehog is the titular main protagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog film series produced by Paramount Pictures and its spin-offs. He is an anthropomorphic alien hedgehog with super speed who hails from Mobius.

After being forced to flee to Earth to escape those seeking his power, Sonic remained in hiding for ten years until he accidentally made his presence known, becoming the target of the sinister Dr. Robotnik. However, thanks to the help of Tom Wachowski, Sonic managed to banish Dr. Robotnik from Earth and establish himself a better life with the Wachowski family.

As time went on, Sonic tried beginning a superhero career with limited success. Regardless, his moment came when Dr. Robotnik returned with Knuckles the Echidna, seeking the Master Emerald. Teaming up with his new ally Tails, Sonic embarked on a globetrotting adventure to stop Dr. Robotnik, during which he befriended Knuckles. After defeating Dr. Robotnik, Sonic would form a new order with Tails and Knuckles to safeguard the Master Emerald from evil.

Concept and design

SonicMovieTrailer31

Sonic's original design, from the Sonic the Hedgehog 30 April 2019 trailer

The production crew used Ted, the living teddy bear from the Ted films made by Universal Pictures, as an influence on making a live-action Sonic the Hedgehog and studied different variations of the character to develop the character's final design.[36]

Due to the negative criticism of Sonic's original design, it was eventually decided that Sonic had to undergo a redesign.[37] This redesign was handled by Tyson Hesse.[1] When re-designing Sonic, the team started with Sonic's face. They compared the design shown in the initial trailer with the "Modern Sonic" design and tried to find a compromise between the two. A new rig also had to be created based on the new design and then everything would have to be reanimated using that rig. Although some old animations were able to be salvaged and reused, many had to be animated from scratch.[38] Animator Max Schneider stated that the redesign took around 5 months and was achieved without stressful overtime.[39]

Between the first and second film, Sonic has a notable increase in height. In Sonic the Hedgehog, his height only goes up to Tom's upper thigh, while in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, his height goes up to Tom's torso. According to Tyson Hesse, this was done to make Sonic's, alongside Tails' and Knuckles', height in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 match how his main series counterpart's height is compared to human characters in the games.[40]

Appearance

Sonic is an anthropomorphic hedgehog with predominantly blue fur. He has small, triangular ears on the top of his head, seven quills that extend from the back of his head, with three on his back and a tail.[41] He also has green eyes, a black nose, and peach fur on his stomach and muzzle, with his muzzle fur extending to the center of his nose ridge. His eyes in particular glow blue whenever he utilizes his chaos energy powers.

In his younger years, Sonic sported a much shorter stature, complete with shorter limbs and quills, more dilated pupils, and a slightly more visible neck. Several months after his first bout with Dr. Robotnik, Sonic had grown considerably larger in size, now almost a head taller than Ozzy sitting on his hind legs.

For attire, Sonic wears a pair of white gloves, a pair of white socks and red Puma Dare sneakers with white straps, white soles and yellow Puma tags. For prior footwear, he wore mismatched shoes that were completely worn out; a left greenish-gray sneaker and a right white trainer with tape around it, and when he was a baby, he wore a pair of basic, small, brown boots.

Personality

SonicMoviePromoSonicNunchucks

Sonic playing with his nunchucks, from Sonic the Hedgehog (film)

Sonic is adventurous, lively, fun-loving, and confident. A thrill-seeker who has a passion for enjoying life, he loves running fast and free, which much of his early childhood was spent doing. However, he is also quite reckless and quick to act before thinking. This tends to make him disobey authority at times, which has gotten himself and those around him into trouble more than once, such as when he used his super speed in the open despite being told by Longclaw not to do so, or when he went into the Piston Pit instead of staying in Tom's truck as he was told to.

Notably, when he thought he was leaving Earth, this attitude was cranked up to eleven, as he wanted to soak up everything on Earth while he still had the time. Because he is so adventurous however, being constrained can often make him impatient and uneasy, which, at one time made him unable to resist the temptation to visit the Piston Pit.

While no stranger to worry, Sonic is usually fearless and cool under pressure when pushed against the wall, although he can be a bit impatient in serious situations. As such, he is ready to talk back to intimidating thugs and would usually banter with Dr. Robotnik during their violent encounters. This confidence in the face of dangers has given Sonic a mischievous sense of humor; he enjoys toying with his opponents, whether it is by verbally teasing or taunting his foes, or by playing pranks or overwhelming them using his super speed. Sonic also tends to give people nicknames, such as calling Tom "Donut Lord", Maddie "Pretzel Lady", and Dr. Robotnik "Eggman", and enjoys making jokes and pretending to be other people.

A similar instance happened when he met Ozzy despite being miffed that Ozzy held the position as Tom's best friend. Sonic similarly puts others before himself, refusing to put others in danger because of himself, and will risk his life to save innocent people, friends, or even animals. Even when it comes to his enemies, Sonic is willing to rescue them when they face an otherwise unfortunate fate or injury.[33]

SonicMovie SadSonic

Sonic looking longingly at the Wachowski family, from Sonic the Hedgehog (film)

After living in self-imposed exile on Earth for 10 years, Sonic became extremely lonely and longed to make connections with real friends, with one of the things on his bucket list being to make a real friend. Fortunately, he eventually found a connection in the Wachowski family, and by extension, the inhabitants of Green Hills. Due to his loneliness, Sonic has also developed a habit of talking to himself or inanimate objects when he has no one else to talk to, which is difficult due to his talkative nature, or when he feels alone.[33] Despite his quirks, Sonic is clever and quick-thinking, as shown by him plucking off one of his quills to grab a Ring when it was just out of his reach or taking advantage of Dr. Robotnik's obsessive hatred of him to distract him with taunts. Maddie has also described Sonic as a “smart kid”.

Having spent much of his life on Earth, Sonic has taken a great interest in Earth's culture, and has picked up many interests and hobbies, such as baseball, playing guitar, watching action movies, keeping tabs on celebrities, and reading comic books. However, Sonic's hobbies, combined with his lack of experience dealing with humans, gives him a slightly unrealistic view of the world and causes him to occasionally act irrationally, such as mimicking the characters in Speed by starting a fight with the people in the Piston Pit. Sonic also has a habit of mimicking heroes from fictional stories, such as comic books and detective movies.

However, his inexperience as a hero prompts him to act rather reckless and rush into chances to prove himself without an actual plan in mind.[33]

Powers and abilities

SonicMovieMotelScreenshot17

Sonic moving at super speed and appearing to be in several places at once, from Sonic the Hedgehog (film)

Sonic possesses the power to move to incredible speed. Tails has even stated that Sonic is the fastest creature in the galaxy. The magnitude of Sonic's abilities depends on his emotional state, this being shown once during Sonic fight with Knuckles, when Sonic gets angry, and begins traveling at such a high speed that everything else appears slow.[42] Sonic took out the thugs including the punk leader during a bar fight and destroyed Dr. Robotnik's drones in Transamerica Pyramid by using this ability. As a side-effect of this ability, Sonic also has a super-fast pulse rate, even while unconscious. Sonic is even capable of thinking and processing information at super speed, being capable of reading through a meter-high stack of The Flash comics in about a second.

As an extraterrestrial, Sonic boasts high durability, having survived a near point-blank explosion caused by one of Dr. Robotnik's Badniks without any notable injuries, and taking direct punches from even Knuckles that send him flying through walls while retaining consciousness. Sonic is also quite strong, being able to catch and launch back missiles with equivalent force, effortlessly catch a full-grown human from multiple stories up,[33] and managed to barely lift an enormous stone pillar with help from Knuckles.

Sonic's core offensive maneuver is a Spin Attack, a technique where he curls into a concussive ball and directs himself at his targets. With it, Sonic can launch a Spin Attack that can shred or burrow through just about any substance given enough speed and hit with enough force to blow apart a section of one of Dr. Robotnik's Badnik tanks and smash Knuckles deep into solid rock with a single impact. Adept in its usage, Sonic can utilize it for both grounded and aerial maneuvers or just soft landings, and also can use a reeved-up variants of his Spin Attack: the Spin Dash.

Knuckles has even deemed him unskilled and untrained in the field of combat, but regardless, in close combat, Sonic is extremely self-taught, and highly adept in combat skills during his battle against Robotnik in his Giant Eggman Robot when he's shown to take out the drones.

SonicTVSpot4

Sonic in control of his chaos energy, from Sonic the Hedgehog (film)

Another aspect of Sonic's power is his ability to generate chaos energy. Conversely, should Sonic harness these energies for himself, they seem to amplify his speed, strength and spin attack, providing the latter with enough power to hit the Eggpod hard enough to send it flying in the opposite direction, break down a bank vault's sealed door,[33] and clash with the similarly charged Knuckles. During his clash with Dr. Robotnik in Green Hills, however, Sonic gained complete control over his energy-based power, allowing him to properly harness it.

Sonic also possesses good survival skills, able to survive living alone in the wild on Earth for ten years. Sonic is a capable leader as well, able to inspire others and come up with good battle strategies.

Super Sonic

Sonic 2 movie - Super Sonic

Super Sonic, from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film)

By harnessing the power of the 7 Chaos Emeralds, Sonic can transform into Super Sonic. Possessing god-like powers in this state, all of Sonic's abilities far surpass his normal ones. He is also able to fly and can turn thoughts into reality, such as conjuring up chili dogs.

Weaknesses

While Sonic's super speed is his greatest asset, it can also be his greatest weakness in certain situations; if he can't get good traction when trying to come to a stop, he can risk tumbling out of control. He also had little to no control over his chaos energy powers to begin with, which would result in him creating unintended energy surges at inopportune times, even as powerful as an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). However, he has since overcome this weakness after gaining control over this ability.

Sonic is also very cocky at times, and often makes situations worse, like when he started a bar fight when attempting to knock out the Roadhouse Thug with a bottle by mimicking an action movie.

Relationships

Longclaw

SonicMovieEndofBabySonicFlashback2

Sonic parting ways with Longclaw, from Sonic the Hedgehog (film)

I miss you, Longclaw. I'm trying to make you proud.

— Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film)

Sonic's first parental figure was Longclaw, who served as both his foster mother and mentor, and took care of him in his early youth. Sonic evidently cared very much about Longclaw and reciprocated her love for him, having run across his island in the open just to bring her a flower. However, he did not always listen to Longclaw's warnings, namely by using his powers in the open despite being told by Longclaw to keep them concealed, certain that he was too fast to be noticed. This, unfortunately, led to the echidna tribe attacking their home and forcing Sonic to flee to Earth without Longclaw, something which Sonic was distraught about, as he did not want to part ways from her. Even then complying to Longclaw's orders, Sonic was unwilling to leave her, as he attempted to come to her rescue when she made her stand against the echidna tribe, only for the Ring portal between them to close up.

The loss of Longclaw had a profound impact on Sonic, traumatizing him with the knowledge of what could happen to those close to him if they got caught up in the struggle for his powers. As such, Sonic took Longclaw's last instructions to heart by staying in hiding on Earth for the next ten years and attempting to leave Earth after he was discovered there despite wanting to stay on Earth and hating his next hideout.

Tom Wachowski

SonicFilm Tom&Sonic

Sonic and Tom, from Sonic the Hedgehog (film)

My favorite person is the Donut Lord. Protector of this town, and defender of all creatures big and small.

— Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic saw Tom Wachowski as a role model even before they formally met, having formed his opinion of Tom by spying on him from a distance. Sonic would refer to him as "Donut Lord", since Tom talked to doughnuts and ate them "if they [got] out of line". He likewise saw Tom as one of the best people in Green Hills given how he defended "all creatures big and small". Sonic also tried to involve himself in Tom's life from a distance, such as by spying on his and Maddie's movie nights together. Sonic's longing to be a part of Tom's life and his family proved to be so great that he considered himself a part of his family through his spying and eavesdropping in order to deny his own loneliness. Regardless, Sonic trusted Tom to some degree, having gone to Tom's garage during his escape from the United States Army because he was the only one, he could think of.

When Sonic and Tom finally met each other face to face, their reaction was far from friendly, with both of them screaming in shock upon seeing each other's reaction and Tom shooting Sonic with a bear tranquilizer. This caused Sonic to accidentally send the Rings he needed to leave Earth to San Francisco, causing Sonic to blame Tom for his entrapment on Earth. Nonetheless, Sonic depended on Tom to stay safe from the United States operative, Dr. Robotnik.

However, Sonic eventually won over Tom with his childish charm and humanity of his own, causing them to bond over a night at the Piston Pit where Sonic was happy for Tom's help in crossing things off his bucket list. During the fight in the bar, he expressed concern about seeing Tom being cornered by thugs and so rushed to his aid. They grew further closer as Sonic admitted his worries and vulnerabilities about leaving Earth for the Mushroom Planet to Tom. The next day, Sonic presumptuously began to see each other as friends, even though Tom said he liked his dog Ozzy more than him. However, Sonic's relationship with Tom got strained when he got personally offended over how Tom was leaving Green Hills for the San Francisco Police Department, and could not understand why he was leaving behind his home and those he knew when he himself had been forced away from his home and his loved ones. However, he eventually came to understand his decision. Sonic also began to see Tom as a protector after he helped him recover from an explosion.

As time went on, Sonic and Tom's relationship would evolve from a friendship to a form of son-and-father relationship, with Tom trying to be a supporting presence to Sonic by reminding him that the time will eventually come for him to use the incredible powers he possesses, but are not allowed to use in public.[43] He would also try to teach him about responsibility and true heroism in order to steer him in the right direction. Although Sonic initially took his lessons lightly, he soon came to understand the depths of his words and used them to convince Knuckles to a truce after noting that he got it from someone who means a lot to him. Eventually, when they fought they were going to be killed by the Giant Eggman Robot, Sonic would tell Tom after he assured him that he was family that he had come to love him like a father, who returned those feelings. Afterwards, Sonic would openly acknowledge Tom as his father figure.

Maddie Wachowski

Hey, we're not going anywhere. We're family.

Maddie to Sonic, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film)

Through spying and eavesdropping, Sonic got to know Maddie Wachowski pretty well before they met. He refers to her as "Pretzel Lady", as she is excellent at yoga. Sonic also liked Maddie because of her kindness towards animals. Sonic also tried to involve himself in Maddie's life from a distance, such as by mimicking her yoga poses and spying on her and Tom's movie nights together. Sonic's longing to be a part of Maddie's life and her family proved to be so great that he considered himself a part of her family through his spying and eavesdropping in order to deny his own loneliness.

Sonic eventually met Maddie properly after she woke him up from an injury, before greeting her in a friendly matter. After Maddie was convinced by Tom to help Sonic, he and Maddie quickly began collaborating to help Sonic find the Rings needed to go to the Mushroom Planet. While Sonic appreciated that Maddie came to like him, he nevertheless did not like how she called him and Tom "cute" together. Regardless, Sonic protected Maddie from Dr. Robotnik when he attacked them. After the threat of Dr. Robotnik had been dealt with, Sonic had come to see Maddie as a close friend. Also, when Maddie later moved Sonic's belongings from his cave to the Wachowski house's attic, Sonic was overjoyed and felt like a member of the Wachowski family.

As time went on, Sonic and Maddie's relationship would evolve from a friendship to a form of son-and-mother relationship, with Maddie helping to steer Sonic in the right direction with Tom's aid. Eventually, when they fought, they were going to be killed by the Giant Eggman Robot, Sonic would tell Maddie after she assured him that he was family that he had come to love her like a mother, who returned those feelings.

I'm really glad you're here, Tails.

— Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film)

Sonic first met Tails after the latter saved him from Knuckles. Initially, Sonic did not trust Tails due to having just met him, but faced with the threat of Knuckles and Dr. Robotnik, he saw he had little choice in the matter and so he accepted his help. However, Sonic soon became convinced of Tails' good intentions and helpfulness, which prompted him to accepting him as his ally. When Sonic saw Tails felt unsure about coming along on his quest for the Master Emerald, he won him over by promising to protect him with an unbreakable promise. During their subsequent journey in Siberia, Sonic grew slightly uncomfortable upon hearing that Tails had spent the past 8 months spying on him, though the two grew a close bond after they won a dance fight and Sonic learned of how he had become Tails' hero after his first victory over Dr. Robotnik in Green Hills and admitted that he was good after showing profound knowledge about his preferences. He also learned about how Tails was insecure about his two tails, while also ensuring him that it was not a bad thing.

He was very worried when Tails did not wake up, even when the G.U.N. agents locked both of them away. After being rescued by Maddie, Sonic blamed himself for putting Tails in danger, which prompted him to go find the Master Emerald alone. After Tails arrived in the Tornado to pick him up, Sonic was relieved that he was alright and impressed that he was able to find him again. Later, during their fight with Dr. Robotnik's Giant Eggman Robot, Sonic and Tails would show close cooperation in battle while at the same time being open to each other's suggestions and ideas. Since then, the two of them have remained good friends, bonded by their oath to guard the Master Emerald with Knuckles, to the point of creating a brotherly bond.

Knuckles the Echidna

StH2 Sonic Knuckles handshake

I found a new family, new friends. And you can, too. You don't have to be alone anymore.

— Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film)

Sonic's relationship with Knuckles the Echidna did not get off to a good start. Sonic in particular would show slight distaste towards Knuckles due to his association with the Echidna, who ruined his childhood by separating him from Longclaw and getting him banished from his home.

However, the two began to sympathize with each other after learning that they both lost the only people they considered to be their families due to the owls and the echidnas' feud, until Tails arrived and tried to refrain Knuckles, inadvertently causing him to think that Sonic was lying. When they met again in the temple holding the Master Emerald, Sonic stopped pulling his punches and began to brutally attack Knuckles, although with reluctancy since Knuckles forced his hand.

When later fighting the Giant Eggman Robot, Sonic got Knuckles to acknowledge him as a brave and noble warrior when he offered to be bait for Dr. Robotnik. Since then, the two of them have remained good friends, bonded by their oath to guard the Master Emerald with Tails and a friendly rivalry. Despite this, he is shown to be exasperated by Knuckles' naivety and boastful attitude, as demonstrated when they played a round of baseball together.

Dr. Robotnik

Your flying eggs are pretty impressive, Mr. Eggman. But let's face it, you'll never catch me!

— Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog (film)

As his arch enemy, Sonic sees Dr. Robotnik as a psychotic madman who only wants to use his power for his own gains and destroy him and his foster family. Despite this, Sonic would tease the doctor by calling him "Eggman" as a reference to his egg-shaped Badniks and mocking his looks.

Sonic first met Dr. Robotnik when he came to the house of Tom Wachowski, who was hiding him, and threatened to kill Tom if he did not tell where Sonic was. Rather than letting Tom pay the price, Sonic revealed himself to Dr. Robotnik to save Tom. Dr. Robotnik, in turn, was shocked by the sight of Sonic, allowing Tom to knock him out, and him and Sonic to escape him. One of Sonic's primary reasons for leaving Earth after that was to protect those knowing of his existence, namely Tom and Maddie, from Dr. Robotnik's wrath. During their later confrontation at the Transamerica Pyramid, Sonic had developed a more fearless attitude towards Dr. Robotnik, which he showed by taunting him and boasting confidently that the doctor would never be able to catch him. However, when Dr. Robotnik proved himself a threat with his Eggpod vehicle, Sonic took the doctor more seriously, and would even begin to show slight fear of him after finding himself unable to escape him and his Eggpod. After resolving to use his power to protect his friends instead of running away however, Sonic faced Dr. Robotnik head-on, eventually defeating him and banishing him to the Mushroom Planet with Tom's aid.

Robotnik and his Giant Eggman Robot.
