- For other uses, see Sonic the Hedgehog (disambiguation).
Sonic the Hedgehog is an adventure map and skin pack for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition that can be bought from the Minecraft Marketplace for 1340 Minecoins, and was released in June 2021 as part of Sonic's 30th Anniversary. The map plays similarly to most mainline Sonic games, featuring the player running through Zones to get to a goal at the end while avoiding hazards and Badniks, though it also has a few elements that are unique to it. The world and skins of the pack have an art style that is a unique mix of Sonic and Minecraft's art styles, featuring many completely unique 3D models in addition to retextures of blocks and items, though the skins lean closer to the Minecraft side than the map's character models.
The pack received an update on April 5, 2022 to promote the release of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 film, adding Labyrinth Zone and a new area to the hub, as well as five additional skins that are all themed around the movies.
In May 2023, Gamemode One released a Sonic texture pack, which features a similar visual style.
Gameplay[]
The main gameplay of the world is the Zones, which all have the simple goal of getting to the end while avoiding hazards in the form of spikes (replaced by blue blobs in Chemical Plant), Badniks, and bottomless pits. However, in an entirely unique mechanic, all of the Zones have randomized acts, with one being picked every time the Zone is entered or the next act is reached. After clearing an act, the player ends up in the Ring shop instead of immediately progressing. Amy and Shadow are both unlocked here by purchasing them for 128 and 256 Ring respectively, though the player can also opt to purchase an extra life for 64 Rings. Aside from the purchasable items, the only other things in the Ring shop are a trapdoor that leads back to Tails' Lab and a large portal. This portal can be freely entered after clearing act 1, but after clearing act 2, it begins costing a certain amount of Rings to enter it and continue further. It begins as 16, but incrementally grows as more acts are complete, capping at 64. This places a heavy emphasis on avoiding damage, as well as collecting as many Rings as possible. Item Boxes with Rings, extra lives, and invincibility inside of them can be found scattered around each act, sometimes placed in plain sight, and sometimes hidden behind walls that can be broken or opened with a button.
These walls can also hide Giant Rings behind them (except in Labyrinth Zone), which lead to Special Stages that give a Chaos Emerald upon completion. To reach the Emerald, the player must fall to the bottom of a vertical structure, going through the holes while avoiding the floor and mines. Failing to do this will simply cause them to start over at the beginning of the Special Stage, and the only way to get back is by completing it, so it is impossible to fail any of the Special Stages after entering them. In Labyrinth Zone, Shards of the Master Emerald are hidden around the acts instead of Giant Rings. These do not bring the player to a Special Stage, but collecting all of them does unlock additional content, just like the Chaos Emeralds.
There are six playable characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, and Super Sonic. Each of them have their own unique ability that gives them an additional movement option in addition to the basics of a jump and a sprint that builds up momentum and speed the longer that the player runs without interruption. Sonic and Tails both have chargeable Spin Dashes that launch them in whatever direction the player is aiming and builds up their momentum, with the distance and speed gained increasing the longer the button is held. They can also charge their Spin Dashes in mid-air, which slows their descent and can be used to avoid a fall by launching onto a platform. Knuckles and Amy both have abilities that are similar to a Spin Dash, except they launch them a far shorter distance and give them a slight boost upwards at the beginning of the movement, even if it is aimed straight forward. Shadow's ability is unique to him, although it is functionally similar to the ones of the other characters. He begins hovering in the air while the move is charging, and once it is released, he is launched in a path the shape of a parabola. In addition to their chargeable abilities, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy all have a second ability that further enhances their movement. Tails can hover in the air by holding the jump button, Knuckles can glide to greatly slow his descent speed after using his dash punch, and Amy can double jump. Super Sonic does not have any unique abilities, as he plays exactly the same as Sonic, with the only difference being that that he is completely invulnerable and cannot take damage (although falling into a pit will still result in the loss of a life).
The map supports multiplayer, though it does not significantly change the gameplay. The only differences are that Rings and lives are shared; all held Rings are combined into one Ring count (Which can be used to make purchases from the Ring store by a single player), and whenever anyone dies, it subtracts a life from everyone. If a life count reaches zero, then all players are sent back to Tails' Lab, regardless if they had any deaths themselves.
Stages[]
Tails' Lab[]
Tails' Lab serves as the hub where everything in the game is accessed. It is also the starting point for the map, as when it is first loaded in to, the player spawns in a small obstacle course that serves as a tutorial for how to play. This room also has a monitor that displays the credits for the pack, Omochao (who gives the player the option to make time based achievements easier or remove the decorations from Tails' Lab to increase performance), and a music toggle switch. Once this tutorial is completed, the rest of the lab (and the map's content) can be accessed. The door to this room is initially closed, preventing the player from getting back in to the tutorial room once they are in the main lab, but this door will open and make the room easy to enter and leave once a lever next to it is pulled. The most important things present in Tails' Lab are the warp rings to the four Zones, with the ones Green Hill, Chemical Plant, and Sky Sanctuary all being lined up in the main room of the lab, and the one for Labyrinth being in a room opposite of the other three. Only Green Hill and Labyrinth are unlocked by default, though; Chemical Plant and Sky Sanctuary both have to be unlocked by scoring a total of 2500 and 5000 points respectively, which are tracked on a large display above the three warp rings.
Another important feature of the lab is the comfort zone above the main room, which allows the playable character to be selected. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are present there at the start, but after being bought, Amy and Shadow will be present as well. The only selectable character not found in the comfort zone is Super Sonic, who appears hovering above a device in the main room after all seven Chaos Emeralds are collected. On the wall next to the Green Hill warp ring is an achievement board, which has 16 achievements in total on it. Another, much smaller version of this board is found in the Labyrinth room, only having three. Each time an achievement is completed, a Chao appears in the lab near the board, all of which have unique appearances. These Chao will wander around by themselves, and can be pet by pressing the interact button, which will make them go through an animation and play a sound. After going to the Chao Garden through the painting in the main room, though, any Chao that are currently in the lab will be moved to the garden and only appear there.
The final gameplay elements present in the lab are two computers in the comfort zone and the Labyrinth Zone room that can be used to play Eggman Mode and Master Mode, which are locked at first and become accessible after getting a total score of 10000 and collecting every piece of the Master Emerald respectively. These are two challenging game modes that involve going through multiple acts back to back with only one life, although only Eggman Mode has a reward for getting through it, Master Mode does not give anything upon completion (except for an achievement). In addition to most of the playable characters and Eggman Mode, the comfort zone also has the radio, which allows the background music for the area to be changed. At first, there is no music in Tails' Lab, but the radio will automatically begin playing once the player walks close enough to it for the first time. From there, it can be hit to switch between six different tracks from various games, although it cannot be turned off. To make there be no music in the lab again, the player must flip the toggle switch inside of the tutorial room, which disables music in every location of the map.
Green Hill Zone[]
Green Hill Zone is the first of the Zones accessible from the main room of the lab, and the only one available there at the beginning. As such, it is the easiest, having relatively low danger obstacles. In terms of environmental hazards, it features beds of spikes and gaps in the terrain that must be jumped over, either through normal means or with the assistance of a bounce panel that launches the player forward. There are also cracked walls blocking the path forward that must be broken with the playable character's special ability, although these are not dangerous, and just exist to slow the player down. These walls also exist in places where they do not hinder progression, and instead hide item boxes or warp rings to Special Stages.
The blue and green Chaos Emeralds can be found behind these wall sections, both of which are guarded by a Newtron.
Green Hill Zone has the most Badniks of all the map's Zones (not counting Eggman Mode), featuring Moto Bugs, Choppers, Crabmeats, Buzz Bombers, and Newtrons.
Chemical Plant Zone[]
Chemical Plant Zone is the second Zone that can be accessed from the main room of the lab, and the first one that is unlocked by reaching a high enough score. The main features of the Zone are long open bridges without barriers on the side, areas submerged in Mega Mack, and doors that can be opened by pressing switches. The primary environmental hazard is grates that shoot blue blobs at regular intervals, which can fire them vertically or horizontally. Other notable features are spike pits, a large sheet of slime that bounces the player upward, and a loop that leads into a long downward drop. Like in Green Hill, the switch opened doors usually hide helpful Item Boxes behind them, as well as the red and purple Chaos Emeralds.
Reaching the Special Stages is quite a bit more difficult than in the previous Zone, as the doors will shut soon after they open. The door to the red Emerald is in the top portion of an area that is half flooded with Mega Mack, with the switch being under the liquid, meaning the player will have to quickly ascend to the upper half of the level in order to reach the Special Stage. The purple Emerald is similar, as the switch to open the door is in a lowered area off to the side, while the door is down the hallway that the switch's platform is attached to.
Chemical Plant Zone has far less Badniks than Green Hill, only having Spinies and Caterkillers.
Sky Sanctuary Zone[]
Sky Sanctuary Zone is the last Zone that can be accessed from the main room of the lab. The gimmicks of this Zone are floating clouds that bounce the player upwards, Warp Points that teleport the player to a new location, and floating boulders that collapse and fall to the ground after being stepped on. There are no environmental hazards aside from falling off of the level, which can mainly occur via narrow paths without walls and large holes in the middle of some flat areas.
As there are no sections of walls that can be opened to reveal something, the white and yellow Chaos Emeralds hidden in this Zone are found hidden in holes in the ground. The former is found under a hole in a large flat area, while the latter is found by activating a warp point inside of the central pit in a large building with grass and waterfalls, which will lift the player directly into the Special Stage's warp ring.
Sky Sanctuary Zone has the least Badniks of any Zone in the map, with Eggrobos being the sole enemy.
Eggman Mode[]
Eggman Mode is an unlockable mode accessible from Tails' Computer in the comfort zone, with the player needing to have reached a total score of 10000 before being able to play it. Instead of having an infinite number of acts, it has only three, which are all the same every time. Act 1 is a more difficult version of Green Hill, act 2 is a more difficult version of Chemical Plant, and act 3 is a more difficult version of Sky Sanctuary. The player is only given a single life, and any opportunities to get an extra life are removed (All monitors are a unique variant with a creeper head on the display that damages the player if broken, and the ring shop is replaced by a warp point that leads directly to the next act), meaning they have to complete their entire run without dying.
In addition to the gameplay changes, there are also a few small visual differences in Eggman Mode. It is always raining instead of always being sunny, and Eggman can be seen in his Egg Mobile at the start of each run, taunting the player before flying off. He can also be seen at the very end of the mode, hovering near the final platform.
By getting through the modified version of Sky Sanctuary, a warp ring for the cyan Emerald's Special Stage can be found. Entering the Special Stage and then completing it will bring the player back to Tails' Lab, and also complete their run.
Since Eggman Mode is comprised of acts from Green Hill, Chemical Plant, and Sky Sanctuary, it has all of the Badniks from each zone, making it the stage with the highest amount of unique enemies by far.
Special Stages[]
Special Stages can be accessed by walking into a warp ring, which can be found in Green Hill Zone, Chemical Plant Zone, Sky Sanctuary Zone, and Eggman Mode. These stages all involve the player slowly falling through a column-like area, trying to reach the bottom in order to obtain a Chaos Emerald. There are multiple planes with holes in them on the way down, and the player must go through these holes in order to avoid a collision, which will send them back to the beginning. There are also mines that deal damage if collided with and chains of Rings, although neither of these matter much in the context of the Special Stages, since Rings do not play a role in them at all. By holding down the special ability button, the player can fling their character in whatever direction they are looking in, which can be useful to evade collisions that would otherwise have been impossible to avoid. However, after using this move, it cannot be used again unless the player dies and begins a new attempt. Once the checkered floor at the bottom of the stage is reached, if the Chaos Emerald is not immediately obtained by landing on top of it, the playable character will curl up into a ball and begin continuously spinning a small distance above the ground until it is collected.
The Special Stages all have distinct patterns, each of which get more difficult to navigate as the player advances through the Zones where they are located. The blue stage features large holes that make it easy to get through, either having them spread out all around the planes, or having one giant opening in the center. The green stage is just as easy, featuring planes that are have half of their quarters removed (these two quarters are always opposite of each other, forming two hourglass patterns) in an alternating pattern. The red stage is slightly more difficult, having a large amount of strange and erratic patterns inside of it, and the purple stage matches this step up by being a mine filled rehash of blue with a different ending pattern. The white and yellow stages are the most difficult ones that can be accessed from a normal zone, as the former's planes all have one of their quarters removed in an alternating pattern, while the latter's openings are entirely rectangles of different sizes and orientations. Finally, the cyan Special Stage is the most challenging stage to complete, which is fitting considering how it is accessed. It is more or less a variant of the blue Special Stage, but with extremely small openings, being only 2x2 blocks wide.
Labyrinth Zone[]
Labyrinth Zone is a Zone that was added in the April 5, 2022 update, and the only Zone accessed from the area of the lab that was also added in said update. Each act of the Zone has multiple paths that can be taken, which can be accessed by traveling higher or lower. These acts also feature many gimmicks, such as shallow sections of water, hovering blocks and patches in the ground that collapse when stood on, doors blocking the players progression that can be opened with switches, and sloped waterways that the player rapidly slides down. This plethora of gimmicks is matched by a plethora of hazards, which include swinging axe pendulums, spikes, spears in the ground that pop out in intervals, and wall mounted owl statues that fire projectiles.
By taking the correct paths, a lot of which involve opening doors or falling through breakable ground, the six Shards of the Master Emerald can be collected. If the player revisits the location of a Shard they have already collected, the altar and the Emerald Shard will both still be present, but the latter will be colored grey instead of green.
Labyrinth Zone has the second highest amount of Badniks of any Zone (not counting Eggman Mode), having Burrobots, Jaws, and Eggrobos.
Master Mode[]
Master Mode is an unlockable mode that is accessible from the computer in the Labyrinth Zone area of Tails' Lab, although the Master Emerald needs to be reassembled by collecting all six Shards of it to make it playable. It puts the player into an act of Labyrinth Zone that has been altered to be more difficult, and they are only given one life to reach the end, similar to Eggman Mode. However, there is only one act from one Zone in this mode. There are also other differences between the two, such as the fact that there are no extra visuals in Master Mode, and there is no reward granted for completing it other than an achievement.
Chao Garden[]
The Chao Garden is an area that can be accessed by the Chao Garden painting in Tails' Lab. It is a recreation of the Neutral Garden from Sonic Adventure 2, and simply acts as a peaceful place that contains the Chao earned by the player, lacking any interactable elements except for said Chao. To get them to appear in the garden, the player must visit it while there is at least one Chao present in Tails' Lab. This will transport them into the garden, where they will stay permanently. Since the Chao do not have stats, cannot have their appearance changed, and there are no competitions for them to compete in, the only thing the player can do with the Chao once they are in the garden is simply watch them or pet them on the head.
Soundtrack[]
The soundtrack for the map is entirely made up of already existing tracks from other Sonic games, and does not feature any original tracks or remixes.
- Green Hill Zone, Chemical Plant Zone, Sky Sanctuary Zone, and Labyrinth Zone all feature their original tracks from the games they debuted in (Eggman Mode and Master Mode also reuse these tracks).
- The Special Stages reuse the Special Stage theme from Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
- The Chao Garden also features its original music, that being the Neutral Garden's theme from Sonic Adventure 2.
- When the player crosses the Goal Plate, the level clear theme from Sonic 3 & Knuckles plays.
- The radio in Tails' Lab can play six different songs from various games ("Down In The Base ...for Hidden Base" from Sonic Adventure 2, the track that plays while viewing game manuals in Sonic Mega Collection, the map theme of Aquarium Park from Sonic Colors, Holoska's day theme from Sonic Unleashed, Sky Chase Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and an instrumental version of "Escape from the City" from Sonic Adventure 2).

Trivia[]
- Tails' Lab has many decorative objects scattered throughout it that serve as references to other pieces of Sonic media. These include:
- Every variant of Wisp from Sonic Colors (Wii and DS versions), Sonic Lost World (Wii U and 3DS versions), and Team Sonic Racing.
- A miniature version of the Speed Star from several of the racing games.
- Tails Doll
- Froggy
- Two jars of water that seem to reference Chaos 0, one containing a block that resembles its brain, and the other containing two green blocks that resemble its eyes.
- The version of the Blue Star from Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity.
- Two stacks of Sun Medals and Moon Medals from Sonic Unleashed.
- The Magic Lamp from Sonic and the Secret Rings.
- A Chao Container with two sets of Chaos Drives resting on top of it and next to it, both from Sonic Adventure 2.
- Small potted palmtrees and smaller potted sunflowers, both of which are based on the scenery of Green Hill.
- Orbot and Cubot
- The Tornado 2 from Sonic Adventure in plane mode, with its grabber claw sticking out of its side. If the player hits it or use the interact button on it, then the plane will begin hovering in the air and transform into jet mode, pinching its claw several times during the flight. After a few seconds, it will transform back into plane mode and land back on the ground. By using the interact button while it is in the air, the player will be transported into the cockpit, where they will stay until they choose to get out.
- Knuckles' hat from Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie.
- Amy's Piko Piko Hammer and her Long Hammer from Sonic Adventure.
- A miniature rotating model of the Death Egg.
- Caliburn
- Two large chili dog chairs and a chili dog on a plate, referencing Sonic's love of the dish.
- A Sega Mega Drive with a cartridge and two controllers, referencing the console the series debuted on.
- The Crystal Ring from Sonic Adventure.
- The Shovel Claw from Sonic Adventure 2.
- What appears to be a collection of game boxes with a simple black, red, and blue design visible on one side, possibly referencing the North American box artwork for Sonic & Knuckles.
- The Light Speed Shoes from Sonic Unleashed.
- The gauntlet that Sonic wears in Sonic and the Black Knight.
- An item box with a ring rotating inside of it.
- Tails' goggles from Sonic Boom.
- An arcade machine that heavily resembles Sonic Athletics.
- A Sonic-themed pinball machine, possibly referencing Sonic Spinball or Sonic Pinball Party. When hit or interacted with, a pinball will be launched and bounced around for a short time before falling back into the machine.
- A cowboy hat, seemingly referencing the one worn by Sonic in the first Sonic the Hedgehog film during the bar scene.
- A broken down Tornado. Just like the Tornado 2, it will play an animation if hit or interacted with, showing its propeller spinning as the rest of the plane shakes and sways in place. The player can also enter the cockpit in the same way.
- The Bounce Bracelet from Sonic Adventure 2.
- The Rhythm Badge from Sonic Adventure.
- The Flame Ring from Sonic Adventure 2.
- The Warrior Feather from Sonic Adventure.
- The Hammer Gloves from Sonic Adventure 2.
- The Sunglasses from Sonic Adventure 2.
- A flute that hovers in the air with a glow effect and plays a tune, referencing the Mystic Melody from Sonic Adventure 2.
- The heads of the Hard Boiled Heavies, all resting on top of tesla lamps.
- Bomb from Knuckles' Chaotix.
- All of the Gems from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), save for the white gem (for some reason, there are also four red gems, whereas there is only one of the other variants).
- A Red Star Ring
- A painting of Sonic standing on a roof with the moon behind him, referencing the opening scene of the second Sonic the Hedgehog film.
- The Dark Rider from Shadow the Hedgehog. It can be interacted with in the exact same ways as the two versions of the Tornado, having an animation where it vibrates in place and emits smoke from its exhaust pipes.
- The Professional from Sonic Free Riders.
- A Snowboard, seemingly referencing the several times that Sonic has used one instead of a specific game, since it does not strongly resemble any of the snowboards he has used before.
- A Skateboard from Sonic Generations.
- Wall Jump Shoes, Stomping Shoes, and Air Boost Shoes from Sonic Unleashed.
- A drone Badnik from the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. When hit or interacted with, it will hover and deploy its weapons for a few seconds, before retracting them again and landing.
- When spawning a Chao via creative mode, there is a rare chance that a Chao resembling an Enderman will appear. This appears to be the only way to obtain this Chao, although information about its existence is very sparse, meaning there could be a way to obtain it legitimately.
- Every Chao that is obtainable from achievements originates from Sonic Adventure 2, with the exceptions of the Chao with a mustache and glasses (Which is a reference to Chao in Space), and the Creeper Chao (which is original).
- It is possible to die in Tails' Lab via the Spikes in the tutorial room. However, the only affect this will have is respawning them and the player will not lose a life.
- If the Chao Garden is entered before any achievements have been earned, a message in chat will appear that says "It doesn't look like there's anything here..."
- Walking into the water in the Chao Garden will instantly kill the player just like the water in Green Hill Zone, respawning them at the center of the garden.
- Because the Chao Garden lacks any invisible walls, it is also possible to run directly into the ocean below, which will have the same effect.
- Ambience Cave noises can play while in Tails' Lab.
- If the player enters the Chao Garden before going to the radio in the comfort zone, its music will continue playing after returning to the lab.
- Instead of creating new blocks for the map, levels are constructed almost entirely of blocks from the base game that have been retextured by the map's built in texture pack, though there are new items in the form of spawners for many of the entities with unique 3D models.
- In the latest version of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, the pack is broken, with errors such as characters not appearing in Tails' Lab and levels that end early.
