This article contains a list of glitches from the 8-bit version of the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Unless otherwise noted, all glitch names are conjectural. Many of them have not been confirmed by Sega.

List of glitches

In Act 1 of Green Hill Zone, there is one steep slope with a ramp underneath which is located at the beginning of the act, that player could use to skip almost the entire act.

Ramp Speed glitch

This glitch occurs if the player pressed down d-pad then quickly pressed up d-pad on mid-air. Sonic later then goes off-screen and the camera would stop at the end of the act. This glitch could also happens on the ramp at the end of Green Hill Zone Act 2. Although, this ramp is even more broken compared to the first one. When timed correctly, players could led themselves into an infinity of nothing.

This glitch occurs more prominently on the Master System version of the game.

  • Wall upwarp glitch:

In Act 2 of Green Hill Zone, there is a spring that can pushes the player inside a wall. While stuck on the wall, if the player jump, Sonic will be warped upwards as the game ejects Sonic out of the wall creating a shortcut.

In Act 1 of Jungle Zone, there is one slope that if player gains enough speed and the right distance, player could land on a rolling log.

If player land on the rolling log quickly enough, the log wouldn't be able to load correctly and the sprites of it become a mess for a couple seconds.

  • Jungle Zone camera glitch:

On the middle of the Act 2 of Jungle Zone, there is a waterfall with multiple path blocks which players could jump on. It is possible to outrun the camera if the player moves vertically quicker than the camera can go up. However, player are unable to get too far up screen as the moving log platforms don't spawn until they are on screen.

If the player barely stands on the rising platforms at Labyrinth Zone before they begin moving, player could get Sonic wedged into the wall and jumping will warp Sonic upwards close to a bubble. Normally, this could be done with every rising platform in the first two acts.

In the Act 2 of Scrap Brain Zone, player could get Sonic to stand inside the walls above the doorways.

  • Scrap Brain Zone platform clip:

At the end of Scrap Brain Zone, player chases Robotnik as he tries to escape on a platform, on the platform player could get on the edge of it and jump and clip under it.

If the player head left at the beginning of the zone and go past wall turrets and then jump to the right, Sonic will land on an invisible ledge that is unable to run on. Instead, Sonic will now could only rolls around and player could head to the right and through the inside of the airship.

  • Final Boss glitch:

If the player quickly land and hit on the glass that shields Robotnik, Sonic is able to jump inside with it. The jump has to be a low jump to land at Robotnik's feet but when player is inside the glass with Robotnik, player could land a good amount of hits on Robotnik before projectiles homing to attack Sonic.
