Synopsis

Differences between the Book and Movie

  • In the beginning, Sonic and Dr. Robotnik share a small bit of dialogue during their battle that isn't present in the beginning of the film.
  • Sonic's powers are explicitly stated to be Chaos energy. The echidna tribe is hunting him in order to harness his Chaos energy and conquer the planet. The source of Sonic's power and the echidnas' motives aren't revealed in the film.
  • The Mushroom Planet is described as a luscious green jungle filled with bright, colorful mushrooms, similar to Mushroom Hill Zone
  • When Sonic was younger, the book tells readers that he witnessed Longclaw die before heading to Earth, whereas the movie implies that she stayed alive to fend off the tribe of echidnas.
  • During the scene where Tom first encounters Sonic, an extra scene is added where he is waiting to open the door and wondering if the raccoons somehow managed to turn on the radio due to hearing Sonic talking.
  • In the movie, when Tom tries to ditch Sonic and the latter replies that he does not know where San Francisco is, Sonic tries to find San Francisco himself, only to end up in the Pacific Ocean. This scene does not happen in the book.
  • Before the bar fight in the book, Sonic starts the bar fight by kicking the "three-hundred-pound biker" instead of the biker approaching Sonic and Tom like in the movie.
  • Sonic and Tom discuss Sonic's lightning powers and their connection to his emotions at the top of the Transamerica Pyramid. This exchange was planned to take place at Rachel's house in the film, but was cut.
  • Robotnik's machines are called Botniks, and Sonic is the one who comes up with the term Badnik.
  • Sonic never gives Robotnik his nickname of Eggman. Instead, he calls him Robuttnik.
  • Agent Stone is the government official who visits Tom and Maddie at the end, and he gives them a government radio receiver instead of an Olive Garden card.
