Synopsis[]
The story opens with E-117 Sigma washed up on the shore of Scrapnik Island. He turns back on and pulls himself onto land. Time jumps to Sigma repairing a former Eggrobo using other spare parts. The Eggrobo turns on and Sigma welcomes it to the other Scrapniks it has repaired. Time jumps again to a Scrapnik leading Sigma to the remains of Mecha Sonic.
The story reaches the present, where Sonic and Tails are sitting in the same spot Mecha was discovered long ago. Sonic yawns as he sits in a lawn chair. A Scrapnik lands on his foot and he greets it. To Sonic's surprise, the Scrapnik replies back. Tails then shows Sonic he created a translator module that decrypts Scrapnik communication. A group of Scrapniks then surround Tails and all say "Hello". Sigma then returns with his posse to tell Sonic and Tails about the damage to the Tornado. Tails shows Sigma his translator, who is impressed by it. Mecha also sees the translator and short circuits for a moment. Sonic reminds Sigma to tell them about the Tornado, to which he says most of the damage can be repaired, but the plane's Integrated Drive Generator is cracked and needs replaced. Tails explains they need it to make electricity for the plane.
Sigma says they have to go into the Death Egg to find the part. Sonic is up to find it, but Tails reminds him of his bad foot and suggests some rest. Sonic appreciates his concern, but insists he is fine and he is losing his mind sitting around. Sigma ensures Tails Sonic will be safe with him on their trek. He asks Mecha to agree, but Mecha just gives Sonic a look. Tails asks if he need to come, but Sigma declines and says he should start fixing the plane and orders his assistants to help him. Sigma, Sonic, and Mecha leave for the Death Egg, as a figure watches them from a distance.
Before they begin their search, the trio goes into a room where Mecha Sonic has a sunflower in a Containment Bubble. As Mecha waters it, Sigma tells Sonic Mecha has cared for it ever since it washed ashore the island. He tells them their goal is to leave the island, and the sunflower reminds them to escape Eggman's shadow. Sonic friendly bumps Mecha and says he actually has a soft spot. Mecha short circuits again and Sonic nervously give a thumbs up. They leave the room and Sigma shows the Scrambled Egg Carrier, which will evacuate them from the island once it is fully reconstructed. As they walk along, it is revealed Mecha Knuckles is following them.
Sigma suggests to split up to find the generator and he hands Sonic a flashlight before leaving. Later, as he and Mecha Sonic search, Sonic apologizes for attacking Mecha Sonic when he first met him on the island. He says Mecha Sonic has changed for the better and appreciates him moving on from his past, unlike his other robot counterpart. Sonic offers a handshake to bury the hatchet, but before Mecha Sonic can shake it, he pulls him out of the way of an explosion. Mecha Knuckles appears on the scene. Sonic strikes a fighting stance, but Mecha Sonic grabs him and runs away from Mecha Knuckles. Meanwhile, Sigma has found the generator part, but the two Mechas and Sonic crash into his presence. Sigma grabs Sonic and acknowledges Sonic has meet Mecha Knuckles. Sonic asks why Mecha Knuckles is attacking him, and Sigma explains he was unable to completely remove his original Eggman directive to defend the Master Emerald Shrine from all intruders. Sigma instead directed Mecha Knuckles to protect the Scrambled Egg Carrier. Sigma tells Mecha Knuckles to stand down, but he knocks out Sigma instead.
Sonic gets out of the way as Mecha Sonic and Mecha Knuckles square off. Mecha Knuckles gets some good hits on Mecha Sonic, causing Mecha Sonic to hallucinate being back on Angel Island in his pristine form. He relives losing to Knuckles and Sonic, with Sonic calling him trash. An angered Mecha attacks Sonic, but loses his arm and returns to his Scrapnik state. A combination silhouette of Eggman, Knuckles, and Sonic appears and calls him his greatest creation. He then hallucinates being smashed by Knuckles and falling down, with the word "trash" replaying around him. Mecha Sonic reawakens from his hallucination, just as Mecha Knuckles was closing in on Sonic. He then grabs and destroys Mecha Knuckles with a Spin Attack. Sonic thanks Mecha and offers a high-five, but Mecha instead ambushes Sonic, grabs him by the neck, and holds him up.

Quotes[]
- Sonic: I appreciate the concern, bud, but I'm fine. If I gotta do any more sitting back today, I'm gonna lose it. I'm going stir-crazy over here.
- E-117 Sigma: It is our dream to leave this island, you see. This place may be our home, but it is also a prison of sorts--a constant reminder of our shameful origins. We are Eggman's discarded puppets no longer. We must escape from beneath his shadow if we are to truly live happily.
Trivia[]
- The artwork featured on the Scholastic-exclusive cover is taken from page 9 of Sonic the Hedgehog: Scrapnik Island #1.
