Differences between the book and film series[]

  • In the beginning of the book, Sonic and Dr. Robotnik share a small bit of dialogue during their battle that is not present in the beginning of the film.
  • Sonic's powers are explicitly referred to as chaos energy in the book. The echidna tribe is hunting him in order to harness his chaos energy and conquer the planet. The source of Sonic's power and the echidnas' motives are not revealed in the film.
  • In the book, the Mushroom Planet is described as a luscious green jungle filled with bright, colorful mushrooms, similar to Mushroom Hill.
  • When Sonic was younger, the book tells readers that he witnessed Longclaw die before heading to Earth, whereas the movie implies that she stayed alive to fend off the echidnas.
  • During the scene where Tom first encounters Sonic, an extra scene is added in the book where he is waiting to open the door and wondering if the raccoons somehow managed to turn on the radio due to hearing Sonic talking.
  • In the movie, when Tom tries to ditch Sonic and the latter replies that he does not know where San Francisco is, Sonic tries to find San Francisco himself, only to end up in the Pacific Ocean. This scene does not happen in the book.
  • Before the bar fight in the book, Sonic starts the bar fight by kicking the "three-hundred-pound biker" instead of the biker approaching Sonic and Tom like in the movie.
  • The book features Sonic and Tom discussing Sonic's lightning powers and their connection to his emotions at the top of the Transamerica Pyramid. This exchange was planned to take place at Rachel's house in the film, but was cut.
  • Robotnik's machines are called "Botniks" in the book, and Sonic is the one who comes up with the term "Badnik". In the film, Robotnik's robots are not given an explicit name, though he himself nicknamed them "Badniks".
  • In the book, Sonic never gives Robotnik his nickname of "Eggman". Instead, he calls him "Robuttnik".
  • In the book, Agent Stone is the government official who visits Tom and Maddie at the end, and he gives them a government radio receiver instead of an Olive Garden gift card.
  • In the original film, the post-credits scene that features Miles "Tails" Prower is played after Dr. Robotnik's mid-credits scene on the Mushroom Planet. In the book, it is the other way around.
  • In the book, when Dr. Robotnik gives his monologue on the Mushroom Planet, his log is stated to be on its 45th day, whereas the film places the monologue on the 87th day.
  • Dr. Robotnik is seen in a mentally ill and insane state. After eating a purple fungi, he regains his intelligence. This does not occur in the movie but a similar deleted scene from the film plays out like this.
  • It is stated in the book that Robotnik plucked the energized quill from Sonic's hide. However, in the actual film series, the quill presumably fell off Sonic during one of his runs, and was found by Tom Wachowski, as shown during the first film.
  • Sonic's fight with the robbers stealing the bank truck is depicted first before talking about Robotnik on the Mushroom Planet.
  • The novel states Tails used his last Ring to get to Earth, while in the film this is left ambiguous.
  • Tails encounters Wade while stealing the police cruiser.
  • Tom and Sonic have a longer conversation before they go fishing
  • Tom does not call to check on Sonic after he leaves for Hawaii.
  • After cutting the power at the Wachowski's house, Robotnik appears on the TV, while in the film the TV only showed static.
  • Sonic's world is referred to as Mobius while in the film it is left unnamed.
  • Robotnik calls the Mean Bean Cafรฉ instead of texting Agent Stone.
  • A majority of the scenes in Hawaii have been removed, leaving only the wedding ceremony and Maddie freeing Sonic, Tails, and Tom.
  • Rachel does not help Maddie free Sonic, Tails, and Tom. Likewise, Maddie holds Commander Walters at gun point in her place.
  • Sonic manages to damage the Giant Eggman Robot with its missile, only for it to rebuild itself.
  • Tails uses the Miles Electric to create holograms of himself, Sonic, and Knuckles to distract Robotnik. In the film, he only creates holograms of himself.
    • Tails also does not break into the cockpit of the Giant Eggman Robot, leaving Knuckles to do this himself.
  • Super Sonic dodges the Giant Eggman Robot's fists as opposed to blocking and destroying them.
  • Super Sonic proves himself to be the same by doing an armpit fart instead of summoning chili dogs.
  • Sonic reassembles the Master Emerald instead of Knuckles.
  • Unlike the novelization for the first film, the post-credits scene with Shadow the Hedgehog is omitted.

Trivia[]

  • Although this quote is not present in the film, Sonic calling Dr. Robotnik "Ro-butt-nik" in the novelization is one of Sonic's most famous insults to Robotnik in the original Sonic cartoons and comics.
  • On the cover of the book, Sonic is seen wearing basic red and white shoes which he is nowhere wearing in the actual film. This was used in some stock artworks of him, instead of wearing his signature red and white sneakers.
  • The phrase "Gotta go fast!" in the blurb is a reference to the English intro for the anime series Sonic X featuring the song of the same name.
  • Sonic's world is referred to as Mobius, a term used in various American media in the 90s as the name of the planet Sonic lived on.
  • While Mobius's name is unmentioned in the film, the name was seemingly planned to be mentioned in the final film according to a scene of an early storyboard when Knuckles pins Sonic to the tree, mentioning "Don't play dumb with me. Child of Mobius. apprentice of Longclaw" as the novelization does.
  • The ending of the first film's novelization is retconned, with Commander Walters being the one who gave Tom and Maddie the government radio receiver.
  • Dr. Robotnik states his middle name is Gerald in reference to his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik.
  • Robotnik says "I! HATE! THAT! HEDGEHOG!", a phrase various versions of Robotnik in American media in the 90s would scream in anger.
  • Sonic says "Way past cool", a catchphrase coined by various versions of him in American media in the 90s.
