Development[]

It was announced in November 2012 that by the end of the month, Sonic the Fighters would be released alongside two other Sega Model 2 fighting game ports in the Model 2 Collection.

Promotional[]

A demo is available for free on Xbox Live, which restricts the game's Offline versus and Xbox Live Versus. It also sets a time limit for Arcade Mode to 59 seconds.[3] It is no longer available on the Xbox Marketplace due to its closure.

Adaptations[]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series published by Archie Comics, an official Sonic the Fighters adaptation was made, covering Sonic the Hedgehog #268-#271 as a part of the "Champions" story arc. This adaption introduced Honey into the comics along with Breezie the Hedgehog. However, this story only involved one Chaos Emerald.

Re-releases[]

The PlayStation 3 version was available to be streamed on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC via the PS Now subscription service, with PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Sony Bravia Smart TV (2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 models), Sony Blu-Ray players and Samsung Smart TV support for the service being dropped in 2017. As of April 2016, the Xbox 360 version of Sonic the Fighters is compatible with Xbox One.[4] The Xbox 360 version is also playable on Xbox Series X/S due to continued backwards compatibility support. As of the Sega Classics delistings[5] on December 6 2024, the Xbox 360 version is no longer available for individual purchase, though it can still be purchased with other Xbox 360 Sonic games as part of the Sonic the Hedgehog Legacy Bundle.
