Sonic at the Olympic Games (ソニック AT 東京2020オリンピック Sonikku de Tōkyō Ni Sen Ni Jū Orinpikku?, lit. "Sonic AT Tokyo 2020 Olympics"), also known as Sonic at the Olympic Games - Tokyo 2020,[2] is a mobile sports game starring Sonic the Hedgehog and other characters from the series at the 2020 Summer Olympics.[3] The game released on iOS and Android devices on 7 May 2020.

Characters

Playable

There are a total of 16 playable characters in Sonic at the Olympic Games. Initially, only Sonic is playable, but the others become unlocked as the player progresses through Story Mode. Similar to the 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, each character is exclusive to certain events. However, Sonic is playable in all events. While individual stats were not present in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, each character has their own sets of stats for each event. Each character also has SP depending which events they are available on. While Sonic gets these for free by playing an event for first time during story, Specials for other characters must be bought by using spirits and training points.

  • Archery: Uses Shot special that ignores wind and fires straight
  • Badminton: uses smash special that is difficult to counter
  • BMX: Uses stunt special that does speed increasing trick in certain ramps.
  • Diving - 3m Springboard: Uses Air Jump Special that let's to spin jump in mid air decreasing speed by every spin.
  • Fencing: Uses feint special that is quick lunging thrust
  • Hammer Throw: uses spin special that makes hammer go farther
  • Javelin Throw: Uses Super run up special that boosts throw power
  • Karate: Uses Strike special which is powerful strike that grants 30 points
  • Long Jump: uses airwalk special that lets run mid air in order to extent jump distance.
  • Shooting - Trap: uses multi lock-on special that triggers bonus round where multiple targets can be shot with one bullet.
  • Sport Climbing: Uses leap special, that let's to jump higher when special meter lets
  • Table Tennis: Uses overdrive special that won't reduce stamina.
  • Trampoline: Uses trick special that will add long trick worth of more points

Promotional

A teaser trailer released during Tokyo Game Show 2019, and playable demo was available at the event. Those who participated received a mobile device stand promoting the game.[4]

Various rewards were added to the game depending on how many users pre-registered, starting from 14 February:[5]

    • Fix for issue which prevented players from progressing past Stage 3-1 when their device was set to a specific language setting.

Trivia

  • A piece of music used for loading screens in the game is a remix of the main theme for Sonic Dash.
  • Unlike Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, the characters do not wear unique outfits, except for Amy and Blaze.
    • Despite this, Amy is still wearing her original outfit in the main artwork of the game.
