Sonic and the Blade of Courage Chapter 1 is the first chapter in the Sonic and the Blade of Courage manga serialized in CoroCoro Comic. It is a 60-page special.[1]

With a bright yellow background and various colorful circles filling it up, Yuuta sheepishly runs forward near the far bottom left of the cover, with Sonic the Hedgehog in the center foreground, sprinting ahead with a smirk and flicking up two fingers.
Summary[]
Yuuta narrates that he's supposed to be on his way home from primary school, however, he is currently held hostage by a robber and tied to a motorcycle he's riding. Police officers request the robber to let go of Yuuta. The robber comments he has plenty of cash and that the police won't be able to hurt him with a kid being caught beside him. Yuuta yells at the robber that he could hurt someone, the robber responds that he's naive and should worry about himself instead. The robber exclaims that he'll speed up so that no one can catch him.
The leaves blow as Sonic the Hedgehog replies it's interesting he said that no one will be able to catch up to him. Sonic runs alongside the motorcycle. Yuuta and the robber stare at awe. Yuuta stutters, asking who the hedgehog is. Sonic exclaims "I'm Sonic! I'm a supersonic hedgehog!". Yuuta looks confused. The robber asks how Sonic is able to catch up to him, Sonic laughs, mocking him calling it simply "catching up". Sonic smirks, commenting it as "worrying".
He points towards two trees, offering to race. He counts down, and the robber boosts ahead. Sonic stops, asking if it's big enough of a head start for him. He then zooms past the robber. Yuuta stares in admiration seeing him clear the gap in an instant, noting that he's never seen anyone so fast before.

Yuuta looks at Sonic sprinting past him. The robber and Yuuta both yell at Sonic in confusion of him not helping out while Yuuta's still held hostage. Comically, the motorcycle hits a rock, exploding and launching both of them ahead, catching money on fire. Sonic catches both of them. Yuuta thanks Sonic but calls him too relaxed given the situation. Sonic replies that not to be so touchy, asking if it got his heart racing.
The police arrest the robber, then a little girl approaches Sonic and thanks him for "helping her the other day". Sonic scratches his head, and smiles, not remembering doing so but, glad he helped out anyways. Yuuta thinks that Sonic is strange but can't be so bad if he helped saved him. A construction worker then yells at Sonic, mad at him for running through his worksite and leaving a footprint in the wet cement, Sonic chuckles and jokes to make it a site for tourists. The construction worker gets angrier at him not showing any shame for it. Yuuta's train of thought continues as he wonders if he's just an "airhead", before concluding that Sonic is a weirdo.
While waking off, a kid from school asks Yuuta if he got in trouble, then mocking him and saying that it isn’t anything as he's the "biggest slowpoke" in the world. Two other kids join in on mocking him, chanting him being a slowpoke. Annoyed, Yuuta asks them to leave him alone, saying that they bother him every day, and that they should get a new hobby. The three dash off, saying that they can't hear him since Yuuta is "too slow", Yuuta sticks his tongue out at them. Sonic ponders them calling him the "biggest slowpoke".
Sonic's focus shifts as he notices Yuuta performing various acts of kindness throughout the town. Sonic looks with surprise; he asks Yuuta why he bothered to help so many people. Yuuta responds that they all looked like they could use help, he elaborates that if he can help someone not be sad, he will, that doing nothing about it is scary to him. Sonic thinks about his comment of it being "scary". Yuuta explains that it's why he's called a slowpoke, taking a long time to move forward. Sonic looks at Yuuta as he continues to talk with the locals, and he smiles.
The Blade of Courage then dangles from Yuuta's neck, and Sonic catches eye of it gleaming. His jaw drops in shock as he exclaims that he remembers why he came in the first place. Sonic grabs Yuuta and asks for his name. He says that he's been looking for him.
Meanwhile, the police rush off to find the robber. The robber hides tired, and sweating, behind an alley. He exclaims his return soon.

Back at a train station, Yuuta wonders where Sonic went after talking to him for "ages". Yuuta flashbacks to their conversation of Sonic looking for him, it continues with Sonic elaborating that he's been look for the Blade of Courage on his neck. Yuuta says that he got it from his grandpa, asking Sonic if he knows what it is. Sonic explains that it's the Blade of Courage. He starts to speak of its legend, that long ago, a kingdom faced a terrible calamity but, no one could do anything to stop it. However, there ended up not being a single due to the previous hero of courage using the Blade of Courage to subdue it. Explaining that one with an abundance of courage is able to use it as the legend goes.
Cutting back to the present, Yuuta ponders on Sonic's words, saying that he's the total opposite of someone with an abundance of courage. Yuuta notices two passengers heading off of the train, Yuuta decides it's time for him to get off as well. However, the train suddenly picks up speed and goes past the train station. In the intercom, the robber from earlier starts to explain that he's hijacked the train, and all passengers onboard are now considered hostages, planning to make the train go further faster until he has his ransom. The train driver is tied up behind him.

Yuuta is surprised to see the robber having managed to escape the police. Yuuta, worried, looks outside the window only to see the train having passed yet another station. The robber taunts the passengers, everyone starts to panic but, the tension gets cut off as outside the window is Sonic cleaning. Sonic whistles while cleaning the windows, and a baby reaches out happily towards him. Yuuta pulls down the window's emergency open and Sonic lands inside the train, and Sonic lands inside the train, eating a chilidog.
Sonic asks what the situation is; the intercom goes off again and the robber explains it to Sonic. Sonic looks confused and asks the robber who he is again; furious, the robber points at Sonic and reminds him that he's the person Sonic tried racing earlier. The robber exclaims that there is nothing the hedgehog can do to stop him. Sonic smirks and vanishes from Yuuta's vision. Yuuta looks around, confused how he disappeared. All of a sudden, all the passengers one-by-one vanish from the train. Much to the shock of the robber, Sonic steps back onto the train, revealing that he quickly took all the passengers off of the train. Sonic smiles, saying that he wouldn't be able to enjoy running with people crying. Yuuta looks at Sonic with reverence.
A boom is heard in the train drivers' room, the robber gets out, and announces that he's destroyed the trains controls, making it unstoppable, and head 300KM an hour. Sonic ties up the robber and frees the train driver. Yuuta looks around then runs to the bathroom, shocking Sonic but, then he sees that the bully from earlier was stuck in the bathroom. Yuuta tells Sonic to take him and go on without himself. Sonic saves him and runs back to the train. The station staff via radio announce that they have the ransom money but, Yuuta tells them that what happened. After a moment to process it, the station staff intercom to tell people to evacuate the station.
Yuuta tries to mess with the train's controls but stops, looking defeated, he starts to tear up. Sonic jumps in front of the train, declaring not to sell his speed short. He pushes the train out from the front but, it doesn't do enough to slow it down. Sonic then tells Yuuta to use the blade to stop the train. Yuuta remembers that only those with courage can use it. He then explains to Sonic why he can't use it, breaking into tears.

The Blade of Courage unleashes.
The Blade of Courage starts to float up, Yuuta grits his teeth, believing that if someone as amazing as Sonic believes that to be the case, then even he may have courage. Just then, the blade awakens, and Yuuta asks the blade to lend its strength to him, he thrusts the blade of light into the train, causing it slow down, the light from the blade fades away. Yuuta realizes the blade slows things down rather than slashing it.
Sonic then speeds up rapidly, pushing the train further and further. The intercom goes off one last time to tell the passengers to flee. Yuuta yells for Sonic to go. The train launches up then collapses down. The intercom goes off announcing the stations has zero people injured. Yuuta sighs of relief. Sonic steps in and Yuuta calls him incredible. Sonic picks Yuuta up, and says that neither he nor Yuuta could have done it on their own, since the two of them ran at different speeds they were able to run they were able to look out for each other. Yuuta tears up then closes his eyes and smiles.
Back at Yuuta's home, he listens to the news on his phone, the news reiterating the situation that went down at the train station. Yuuta fidgets with the Blade of Courage, surprised that the kind of power lied inside that kind of object. Yuuta then wonders why Sonic was looking for it in the first place. Sonic steps onto Yuuta's window, sitting down and saying Chilli-dogs "can't be beat". Sonic says it's a good thing that Yuuta is the one holding the blade. Yuuta asks Sonic what he means by that then asks what Sonic's angle is. Sonic steps down onto the floor, saying he'll keep it brief, then explaining that he wants Yuuta to save the world with him. Yuuta narrates that "After that day... What used to be my slowgoing everyday life kicked off at the speed of sound."
