Sonic X Shadow Generations (ソニック × シャドウ ジェネレーションズ Sonikku X Shadō Jenerēshonzu?) is an upcoming bundle video game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. It features two games: a remaster of Sonic Generations (2011) and a new game called Shadow Generations, featuring Shadow the Hedgehog as a playable character.

The game was first teased during Sony's PlayStation State of Play livestream on 31 January 2024. It is set to be released for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and Series S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC on 25 October 2024.[2]

Gameplay[]

Sonic X Shadow Generations features two games: a remaster of Sonic Generations, retaining the same gameplay style, and Shadow Generations, incorporating elements from the original Generations and Sonic Frontiers.

Changes in Sonic Generations[]

New characters[]

Skins[]

Gameplay features[]

  • Classic and Modern Sonic can use the Drop Dash ability that debuted in Sonic Mania.[3] [4]
  • The player can now customize their controls to be based on either the original game's control scheme (referred to as "Legacy Controls") or that of Sonic Frontiers. When the latter option is selected:[5]
  • The Life system is removed from the game.[6]
  • There are now three Chao emblems hidden throughout every level in the game. Collecting all three of them rescues that particular Chao. These Chao also appear in the first cutscene of the game celebrating Sonic's birthday. The Chao can become a companion of Classic and Modern Sonic in the levels, similar to Sonic Advance 3 for the Game Boy Advance.
  • There will be new missions in the game called "Chao Rescue" for replay value.

Appearance[]

  • Due to the ability to customize controls, Omochao's tutorial dialogue is modified so that he no longer mention any buttons by name. The buttons instead appear on-screen as Omochao is talking.
  • The HUD now tracks the Red Star Rings when they are collected. In the original game, the amount of Red Star Rings found could only be viewed in White Space.

Development[]

Shadow the Hedgehog first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2, becoming very popular with fans and a recurrent character in the series. Prior to Sonic X Shadow Generations, he had protagonized his own eponymous game that was released in late 2005 to mostly negative reviews.

After the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 by Paramount Pictures, Sonic Team wanted to get a game starring Shadow out before the third movie's release, since he would be playing a big part in it. The development started while Sonic Frontiers was being worked on, since Sonic Team had been expanding throughout the past couple of years. It allowed a small portion of developers to work on both games along with Sonic Superstars.[7]

Takashi Iizuka, head of Sonic Team, suggested the idea of a new game starring Shadow in June 2023, but otherwise gave no confirmation that one was in development.[8] It would not be until January 31 of the next year where in Sony's State of Play, it was revealed to the public. It is the second time a 2010s game was remade for newer consoles, following Sonic Colors: Ultimate in 2021. Unlike Sonic Colors: Ultimate, which was developed by Blind Squirrel Games, Sonic X Shadow Generations is being developed by Sonic Team.[9] Iizuka later established that the story of Shadow Generations will share an universe with the story of Sonic Generations due to the Time Eater.[10]

Promotion[]

On 31 January 2024, Sonic X Shadow Generations was first announced during Sony's State of Play.

On 14 May 2024, it was announced that an upcoming 2D animated special titled Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings will be released in Fall 2024.[11]

On 8 June 2024, a trailer on Summer Game Fest was shown which was instantly released on YouTube.[12] With it, it was announced that there would be multiple bonuses available: Physical pre-order, and a Digital Deluxe version. The Physical pre-order bonus will give the buyer a skin based on Sonic's appearance from the original Sonic Adventure game with all his Level Up Items and Gerald Robotnik's Journal, a physical book that has details of his life before Shadow, and what lead to his creation. PlayStation owners will also get extended and deleted scenes from Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings.

The Digital Deluxe Edition contains the Sonic Adventure Legacy Sonic skin, as well as many more features, like a Terios Skin for Shadow, which is based on one of his early designs from Sonic Adventure 2. The customer will also purchase skill points for Sonic Generations, an extra BGM pack, a digital artbook and soundtrack all while getting to play the game three days early on all platforms (October 22nd as apposed to the 25th). However, getting the Digital Deluxe Edition on the Nintendo Switch will not allow players to play it early.

On 1 July 2024, it was revealed that those who sign up for the website's newsletter will receive a free legacy skin for Classic Sonic based on his first 3D appearance (i.e. Sonic Jam).

On 3 July 2024, the Japanese website was updated, revealing that Shadow Generations will have another character in the campaign, but its identity currently remains unknown.[13]

In an interview for Good Vibes Magazine, Iizuka revealed that Jun Senoue from Crush 40 will be in charge of the soundtrack for the game.

There will also be an additional character skin and level for Shadow that'll release in Holiday 2024.

On July 19, 2024, it was announced on their social media that all pre-orders from the physical release will have the Japanese box art as a reversible cover.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first console Sonic game where the logo uses a different font for "Sonic". The font originates from Sonic Lost World.
  • To coincide with the announcement of the game, Sonic Superstars also received a Shadow costume as free DLC on 15 February 2024.[14]
    • The game's website URL was leaked on Twitter two days prior to its announce trailer.[15]
  • The announcement trailer uses an edited version of the shot from the original Sonic Generations trailer where both Sonics jump into the air in slow-motion. The shot was extended with the addition of Shadow flying past Modern Sonic (with Classic Sonic falling out of the way confused), causing the hedgehogs to strike the same poses from both the Sonic Adventure 2: Battle opening and the cutscene before the Rival battle with Shadow in the original Sonic Generations, although mirrored and with Sonic having a startled expression.
  • The Terios skin is based on an early concept version of Shadow from Sonic Adventure 2, who was known as "Terios" during development.[16]
