Sonic XS is a browser game released on the 4Kids TV website in January 2005 to promote the Sonic X anime series. A sequel named Shadow XS, featuring Shadow the Hedgehog as the playable character, was released shortly after in February 2005, and an updated version of Sonic XS with modified graphics and the addition of cheat codes was released in May 2005.
Plot[]
Amy Rose has been kidnapped by Dr. Eggman. It is now up to Sonic to save the day by fighting his way through Eggman's robots to reach the top.
Gameplay[]
Sonic XS takes place in a 2D perspective, where the player controls Sonic the Hedgehog to run and jump from platform to platform, in an attempt to reach a gray door marked "Exit" under the time limit of 60 seconds. Rings are also featured as a collectible item scattered across the game, each increasing the player's points by one. Several E-23 Missile Wrist robots are positioned throughout the map, walking left and right on platforms and firing lasers horizontally in either direction. Should Sonic touch the robots or their laser fire, he will be pushed back a small distance. To combat the robots, the player can use the Ring Toss to throw Rings that destroy the robots on contact. The Ring Toss does not subtract from the player's total, and an infinite number can be tossed. Destroying robots also increases the player's point counter by one. Falling into the bottomless pit or running out of time will result in a Game Over.
Upon reaching the exit, the player able to submit their final score to the leaderboard and play again.

Cheat codes[]
Cheat codes only work with the updated version of Sonic XS from May 2005 onward. They are activated by entering them in the text box on the main menu screen. To obtain the codes, players could have either tuned in to 4Kids TV programming on Saturdays, or view the list of codes provided below the game window as part of "The Return of Super Cheat Code Morning".
- doublejump: Doubles the power of the player's jump.
- bulletproof: Grants the player invincibility against the robots and their laser fire.
- doublecoins: Doubles the score the player gains from collecting Rings.
- float: The player jumps higher and falls slower.
- noplatforms: The player can jump through all platforms.
Glitches[]
- Every time the player presses the "Play Again?" button after completing the game or getting a Game Over, a new instance of the game's looped music track will begin playing over the older one, resulting in multiple duplicate audio tracks playing at once. This can only be fixed by rebooting the game.
- If the player uses the Ring Toss while in the middle of a jump, they are able to jump again in midair without the double jump cheat. By repeating this, the player is able to jump indefinitely.
Trivia[]
- The platform sprites are taken from Neo Green Hill from Sonic Advance.
- The "miniature Sonic"[1] sprite seen in-game is identical to an illustrated depiction of Sonic that appears in "How to Catch a Hedgehog", the twenty-fourth episode of the Sonic X anime series. During each sequence of Chuck Thorndyke explaining his next method to catch Sonic, a Sonic doodle identical to the "miniature Sonic" sprite is used to play out each scenario, using a similar running animation.
- The game's main menu refers to Sonic as "Sonic Xs", though this is likely a typo.
- Despite being mentioned in the synopsis, Amy and Eggman are not seen in-game.
