On 6 June 2000, Sega announced that it would partner up with Motorola in a deal that would see them produce several J2ME-based games for Motorola's new cellular phones. Screenshots of several unnamed games that were to be presented at JavaOne 2000 were released, one of which being Sonic Demo.
When JavaOne was hosted on 7 June 2000, Sonic Demo was fully announced by Sega and Motorola along with several other games, including Sonic J, Sonic's Bomb Squad, Sonic Head On and Sonic Logic. According to IGN, Sega was vague on details regarding Sonic Demo.
