Sonic Boom, known as Sonic Toon (ソニックトゥーン, Sonikku Tūn^?) in Japan, is an American-French CGI-animated television series developed by Sega of America in collaboration with OuiDo! Productions, based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise created by Sega. Sonic Boom is the fifth animated television series based on the Sonic franchise, the second developed by SEGA following Sonic X (plus the second series co-produced in France following Sonic Underground) and the first ever television series in the franchise to be produced in computer-generated animation and in high definition.

The series premiered on 8 November 2014 in the United States on Cartoon Network and released on November 19 in France on Canal J. The show launched in Spring 2015 on the French children's network Gulli, and was followed by an international launch on many other countries. The series is a part of the Sonic Boom spin-off franchise, which consists also of five video games, a comic book series and a toyline.

The series is aimed at children, teenagers and adults, and centers around Sonic and his friends Tails, Amy, Knuckles and Sticks, and their never ending search for adventure and their battles with their arch nemesis Doctor Eggman. Other characters, both new and old, also join the ensemble.

The series was announced to be available for streaming off Hulu by the end of May 2016 and has been since 18 May. Due to Hulu being a US exclusive service and Sonic Boom being currently exclusive to Hulu, the series has been made available for streaming outside of the US on Netflix as of 23 December 2016. On 19 November 2017, the second season of the show was added to Hulu. The first season of the series became available to buy from digital storefronts on 6 November 2018. On 16 March 2019, it was announced that the second season was made available for digital purchase.

The series ended after two seasons with 52 episodes each, as the show's producer Bill Freiberger confirmed that there were no plans to continue the series.

Production

The Sonic Boom animated series was designed as a spin-off from the main Sonic continuity so the staff could take the characters and their world in directions the main series could not. It was first announced in October 2013, revealing a teaser image featuring the show's four main protagonists, Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles, in silhouette form. The series, which originally consisted of 52 episodes with eleven minutes of running time each, is co-produced by Sega of America Inc. and OuiDo! Productions and was developed by Evan Baily, Donna Friedman Mier, and Sandrine Nguyen, with Baily and Bill Freiberger as showrunners, under the supervision of Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka to ensure that it was true to the Sonic characters and universe. Mike Banker also assisted with writing the television series. On 6 February 2014, Sega revealed the first trailer for the series, showcasing the new designs for the characters.

Many of the current voice actors for the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series returned to voice the characters of the series, including Roger Craig Smith as Sonic, Travis Willingham as Knuckles, Cindy Robinson as Amy, and Mike Pollock as Dr. Eggman, while voice actress Colleen O'Shaughnessey succeeded Kate Higgins in the role of Tails. The series also introduced a new character named Sticks the Badger, a crazy and paranoid hunter who has been living alone in the wilderness for many years before meeting Sonic and his friends, who is voiced by Nika Futterman. In an interview with Polygon, Iizuka stated the series came about as a desire to appeal more to Western territories, following the 2003 Japanese anime series Sonic X, with Iizuka also stating that the franchise will run in parallel with the 'Modern' series of Sonic the Hedgehog games. Baily has stated the series is a mixture of action and comedy, featuring an episodic structure. On 4 October 2014, Sega announced the air date of the series in the United States to be 8 November 2014.

On 19 February 2015, Cartoon Network announced in a press statement that Sonic Boom, along with ten other shows, will return for the 2015-2016 TV season. This was subsequently confirmed by executive producer Bill Freiberger in a fan commentary to not be an indicator of a renewal or second season at this time. However, on 10 October 2015, Lagardère Entertainment Rights announced that a second season is currently in production. The final animatic of the second season was edited on 27 November 2016. Like season one, season two will include 52 episodes of eleven minutes length each. At Tomy’s Toy Fair in New York, the second season was given an official premiere on Cartoon Network in Fall 2016.

Jordi Valbuena would return for season two as the series' storyboard artist, like in season one. At Sonic Revolution 2016, Bill Freiberger announced that "if there is a season two," there would be both new and old characters (like T.W. Barker, the Stunt Bears and D.B. Platypus) and other surprises from other areas of Sonic. It was later confirmed that Shadow and "more characters from the Sonic game universe" would make an appearance in season two.

Sega itself officially pulled back the curtain on the second season at the Sonic 25th Anniversary party in San Diego with a sneak peek of "Spacemageddonocalypse". Later, the video game Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice would feature sneak peaks on concept art revealing characters, storylines and subjects to be introduced in season two. Following the premiere of "Tommy Thunder: Method Actor" on Cartoon Network, it was announced on 10 November 2016, that the remainder of season two will air on Boomerang to make the channel more desirable On 9 February 2017, Lagardere Studios Distribution signed pre-sales to more than ninety countries around the world to air the second season of the show.

On 17 December 2016, storyboard artist Clemence Liberge stated on Facebook that there will be a third season for Sonic Boom. This has yet to be officially confirmed. A Japanese dub of the series was announced to premiere on Netflix on 1 July 2017.

On 10 September 2017, Bill Freiberger announced on his Twitter account that he will no longer be involved with the series following the conclusion of season two.

Plot

Sonic Boom is set in a wide-open world on Seaside Island, where most of the characters live in and around Hedgehog Village. This vast landscape is filled with jungles, mountains, undersea civilizations, cloud cities and all kinds of other environments. Residing on this island are Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends: Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, and Sticks the Badger. The gang spend their days trying to ward off the evil (and often zany) plans of Dr. Eggman, who is bent on taking over the island and subsequently the world. In this ensemble of a comedy that pokes fun at action-adventure storytelling, Sonic faces regular battles with Eggman’s henchmen, including loyal robots Orbot and Cubot, evil interns, and giant, robotic monsters.

"Get ready for a thrill ride at 1,000 miles an hour with Sonic and his friends!

Sonic lives a quiet life in his seaside cabin. He is surrounded by his friends: Tails, his best friend and right hand man, Knuckles, his "rival", the sweet Amy Rose and Sticks, a newcomer. And even if sometimes his ill-considered decisions get him into trouble, he always manages to get out of it. Everything is going well in the best of all worlds. Well, almost!

Unfortunately for our hero, the evil Dr. Eggman has not given up on taking over the Earth. And he is determined to do it by any means necessary, starting with getting rid of Sonic and his friends. Hidden in his fortress, he sets up robots that, he is sure, will defeat Sonic and his gang.

As fast, strong and brave as he is, Sonic will need the help of all his friends to defeat the infamous Dr. Eggman and thwart all his plans. After all, unity is strength!"

Cast and characters

The cast for Sonic Boom was confirmed by Sega on 25 February 2014. Jack Fletcher works as the voice director. On 29 May 2014, Sega announced that Nika Futterman will play the role of Sticks, a jungle badger, who joined the franchise as a major character. Several new characters were also created for Sonic Boom, such as Mayor Fink, Fastidious Beaver, and Perci. Jack Fletcher works as the show's voice director, a role he has also held for the Sonic video game series since 2010.

• Sonic the Hedgehog (voiced by Roger Craig Smith) – The protagonist of Sonic Boom and the leader of Team Sonic, Sonic is a fifteen-year-old blue hedgehog with the ability to run at supersonic speeds. While having a good heart and good intentions and is very benevolent, Sonic can be shortsighted of others' feelings and be rather impatient. He also enjoys his status as a hero and dislikes competition. Unlike most incarnations, this version of Sonic has blue-furred arms and wears a brown neckerchief around his neck and athletic sports tape on his wrists and shoes.
• Miles "Tails" Prower (voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey) – An eight-year-old yellow fox, Tails is Sonic's sidekick. Sporting two tails, Tails is able to use them to achieve flight like a helicopter. He wears goggles and a tool belt, and serves as Team Sonic's mechanic, pilot, and technology expert. Confident in his abilities, Tails spends much of his time tinkering with inventions meant to make life easier, although they do not always turn out as expected. He maintains the same overall personality as his game counterpart, though he can be blunter and more openly skeptical.
• Knuckles the Echidna (voiced by Travis Willingham) – A sixteen-year-old red echidna from Angel Island and the last of his kind. He serves as the muscle of Team Sonic, capable of smashing boulders and asteroids to pieces with a single punch. Whereas other versions of Knuckles have a history of being gullible, this version of Knuckles is dimwitted, clueless and often annoys his teammates with his low wit. However, he is very loyal and loves nature. Out of everyone on Team Sonic, Knuckles received the most drastic redesign for the series: Knuckles is considerably taller than most versions of the character, appears more muscular, and wears sports tape around his hands as opposed to spiked boxing gloves.
• Amy Rose (voiced by Cindy Robinson) – A twelve-year-old pink female hedgehog, Amy is the peppiest member of Team Sonic and Sticks' best friend. She serves as the team's organizer and archeologist, and wields a giant hammer, which is her most prized possession, in battle. Amy has a crush on Sonic, but is cautious and shy about admitting it, unlike other versions of her. This has not stopped other characters from pointing her attraction to Sonic however. She is more emotionally mature than her friends, often offering common sense when the rest of the team gets carried away. Her design is overall the same, except for her clothes, which are now more adventure-orientated.
• Sticks the Badger (voiced by Nika Futterman) – An orange and brown free-spirited badger that comes from the jungle. She is Amy's best friend. She is an efficient combatant and is skilled in the usage of boomerangs and other weapons of her own design. Sticks is a paranoid individual of wild habits, who enjoys digging through garbage and looking at shiny objects. While she may at times seem off-kilted, obtuse, mental and just plain nutty, her madness often proves correct and will occasionally stray into genius, allowing her to find solutions that no one else could have thought of.
• Dr. Eggman (voiced by Mike Pollock) – A middle-aged, mad human scientist who is the nemesis of Sonic, his team and the inhabitants of Seaside Island. He resides in a lair off the island's coast. In this series, Eggman is typically rather buffoonish, with his schemes usually being more zany rather than threatening. At times, he even appears to be on friendly terms with the heroes, though this usually leads to some scheme in which he tries to defeat them. His ambitions are to conquer Seaside Island (so he can built his own evil theme park) and the world.
• Orbot (voiced by Kirk Thornton) – Eggman's red orb-shaped service robot. He is the wiser, blunter, more formal of him and Cubot, often being honest with Eggman at the expense of the latter. He is also the final unit in the Orbot Series.
• Cubot (voiced by Wally Wingert) – Eggman's yellow cube-shaped service robot. He is the slower, more dimwitted of him and Orbot, which usually leads to him misunderstanding the meaning of other characters' statements. He is also the final unit in the discontinued Cubot Series.

• Admiral Beaverton (voiced by Roger Craig Smith) – A beaver and a wealthy seafarer.
• Badniks – The main robotic foot soldiers in service to Eggman. Many of Eggman's plans involve attacking Team Sonic and Hedgehog Village with his Badniks. The Badniks include:
  • Bee Bot – A bee-based robot whose design is derived from the Buzz Bomber.
  • Beetle Bot – A beetle-based robot.
  • Crab Bot – A crab-based robot whose design is derived from the Crabmeat.
  • Mantis Bot – A mantis-based robot.
  • Motobug - A ladybug-based robot. whose design is derived from the Moto Bug.
  • Scorpion Bot – A scorpion-based robot.
  • Shark Bot – A shark-based robot.
• Beaver Policeman (voiced by Kirk Thornton) – A beaver and the police sergent of Hedgehog Village's police force.
• Belinda (voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey) – A goat and resident of Hedgehog Village who is Charlie's wife. When Charlie turned to villainy, she encourages her husband and in turn begins expressing villainous tendencies of her own.
• Beth the Shrew (voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey) – A young and sweet pink shrew who will look up to anyone for any of their positive traits. She is also extremely sympathetic, showing pity towards even Eggman when he found himself in a humiliating situation.
• Bike Chain Bandit (voiced by Greg Hahn) – An opossum and a criminal maniac roaming Seaside Island.
• Bolts (voiced by Mike Pollock) – An alien robot from Roboken and Mighton's sidekick.
• Burnbot (voiced by Travis Willingham) – A versatile destruction robot created by Dr. Eggman.
• Charlie (voiced by Kirk Thornton) – A desert rat and a former archaeologist living in Hedgehog Village. Initially living a normal life, his frustrations at Knuckles' incompetence when the echidna tried to make up for a past misdeed, only to ruin Charlie's life, drove him to become a villain. Having found a new profession as a villain, he now terrorizes Seaside Island with an Ancient mech suit.
• Child Monkey (voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey) – A young Monkey who lives in Hedgehog Village.
• Chumley – An infant walrus and the youngest child of Lady Walrus. A running gag in the show involves Chumley constantly ending up in dangerous situation, either on his own or as a result of Dr. Eggman's attacks.
• Comedy Chimp (voiced by Bill Freiberger) – A chimpanzee resident of Hedgehog Village who hosts his own late-night talk show.
• Councilman McMeh – An associate of the Meh Burger company.
• Cubot prototypes (voiced by Wally Wingert) – The line of unsuccessful Cubot Series prototypes. After being scheduled to be scrapped, the prototypes fled to Seaside Island in order to hide from Eggman.
• D-Fekt (voiced by Wally Wingert) – An Eggman robot capable of manipulating objects using eco-magnets. After inadvertently ruining Eggman's operations, D-Fekt was given to Team Sonic, who reprogrammed him as an ally. D-Fekt first appeared in Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice before appearing during the series' second season, where he became the neutral protector of the Cubot prototypes.
• D.B. Platypus (voiced by Wally Wingert) – A platypus and image specialist who imposes excessively strict guidelines on his clients.
• DangerCo Deadly Equipment Warehouse Worker (voiced by Bill Freiberger) – A divorced male ox working at the DangerCo Deadly Equipment Warehouse.
• Diane Aardvark (voiced by Nika Futterman) – An aardvark photographer who runs her own ad agency and works a part-time job for "Modern Lair Magazine". She also has her own assistant named Gunther.
• Dixon (voiced by Wally Wingert) – A ferret and media producer. He was initially the producer of Justin Beaver until his money-making hypnosis scam got foiled by Dude-itude. Now, he works on Seaside Island's television network where he frequently uses shady tactics in order to drive up ratings.
• Doc – A red wolf and medicinal doctor.
• Earl (voiced by Kirk Thornton) – A construction worker who works at a warehouse in an unspecified village on Seaside Island. He first appeared in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric under the name "Foreman Fred" where he worked on excavating an Ancient site.
• Fancy Gentleman – A red wolf and a member of the aristocratic elite.
• Fastidious Beaver (voiced by Mike Pollock) – A beaver and resident of Hedgehog Village who works as the local librarian. He has a tendency to correct other characters' grammar and frequently begins his sentences by saying "Actually". Always caught in the local goings-on, he has a knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
• Fennec Garbage Man – A male fennec who handles all the trash around Seaside Island.
• Fennec Male (voiced by Travis Willingham) – A fennec who lives in Hedgehog Village.
• Fennec Shopkeeper – A male fennec who runs a grocer on Seaside Island.
• FriendBot (voiced by Wally Wingert) – An Eggman robot who went rogue and defected to Team Sonic. He initially took up the job of protecting the Cubot prototypes, but later moved to Roboken.

• Hypnobot (voiced by Travis Willingham) – A robot created by Tails with the ability to control other robots. Tails initially created Hypnobot for a robot tournament, but a freak accident sent him flying into space where he was discovered by Roboken robots. Growing vengeful over being abandoned by Tails, Hypnobot attempted to take over the world using the world's robots, but was ultimately stopped.
• Ice Cream Vendor – A cat whose ice cream cart keeps getting destroyed.
• Justin Beaver (voiced by Cindy Robinson) – A teenage beaver superstar known for his singing career. For a time, he was exploited by his producer into singing hypnotic pop songs that turned his audience into mindless consumers, but after getting liberated, he pursued a career in reality TV.
• Lady Goat (voiced by Cindy Robinson) – A goat who is frequently seen in Hedgehog Village.
• Lady Walrus (voiced by Bill Freiberger) – A dowager walrus of aristocratic descend who lives in Hedgehog Village. She has two sons, Stratfort and Chumley.
• Leroy the Turtle (voiced by Kirk Thornton) – A turtle who serves as a postal worker and mail carrier for Seaside Island.
• Lightning Bolt Society: A "secret" society of villains coinsisting of local small-time crooks. However, they are largely considered incompetent and harmless by other villagers and Dr. Eggman.
  • Chameleon (voiced by Kirk Thornton) – A wolf dressed as a tree who serves as the Lightning Bolt Society's spy and talent scout.
  • Dave the Intern (voiced by Roger Craig Smith) – A dorky teenage nutria and employee at the Meh Burger fast-food restaurant in the Village Center. Aspiring to become a great villain, he is Eggman's biggest fan and was briefly taken on as the Doctor's intern, but was later fired for being too ambitious. He also lives with his mother, who pressures him to be a better villain.
  • Weasel Bandits – A trio of identical-looking weasel thieves.
  • Willy Walrus (voiced by Wally Wingert) – A walrus burglar who specializes in breaking and entering.
• Lord Eggman (voiced by Mike Pollock) – A counterpart version of Dr. Eggman from an alternate dimension where Sonic never existed. Initially ruling unopposed, Lord Eggman was dealt his first defeated after Sonic arrived in his dimension and assembled a team that could topple him. Since then, Lord Eggman has been plotting his revenge against Sonic.
• Male Fennec – A snarky fennec who owns a store in Hedgehog Village.
• Mark the Tapir (voiced by Wally Wingert) – An obsessive tapir and the fanatical, self-proclaimed “number-one fan" of Sonic.
• Mayor Fink (voiced by Mike Pollock) – A mouse and the low-level bureaukrat mayor of Hedgehog Village. He often prioritizes maintaining his own political position above all else while paying little attention to the demands of the villagers.
• Metal Sonic – A robotic duplicate of Sonic created by Dr. Eggman.
• Mike the Ox (voiced by Kirk Thornton) – An ox and the residential village buffoon of Hedgehog Village. He is also a close friend of Knuckles.
• Mighton (voiced by Wally Wingert) – A heroic alien robot from Roboken.
• Mombot (voiced by Cindy Robinson) – A robotic mother Eggman created to have a motherly figure of his own. Although she is overly critical, Eggman loves her dearly. She has also become a mother figure for not only Eggman, but also Morpho, Orbot and Cubot.
• Monkey-Boy (voiced by Kirk Thornton) – A mystical mamoset monkey and a retired curse-breaker.
• Morpho (voiced by Roger Craig Smith) – A shapeshifting robot built by an Eggman from another dimension. After his own dimension was destroyed, he migrated to the Sonic Boom World and pledged allegiance to Eggman. He mainly appears in the guise of Eggman's made-up brother, "Steve Eggman".
• Mr. Slate (voiced by Travis Willingham) – An ox and business tycoon who owns the Meh Burger restaurant chain and other businesses around Hedgehog Village.
• Mrs. Dave's Mom (voiced by Cindy Robinson) – Dave the Intern's unseen mother. She admires villains, especially Dr. Eggman, and pushes her son hard to become a proper villain himself.
• Mrs. Vandersnout (voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey) – An elderly wolf from Hedgehog Village. Despite appearing seemingly innocent, she has repeatedly demonstrated dishonest and immoral behavior, such as scamming Team Sonic out of their money and suggesting Sonic be poisoned.
• Nominatus (voiced by Wally Wingert) – A rogue computer virus who seeks to destroy all organic life. He was destroyed in season one after attempting to take control of Eggman's technology, but returned in season two with two minions, Beta (voiced by Kirk Thornton) and Retro (voiced by Roger Craig Smith), only to get imprisoned in the real world in Eggman's lair.
• Old Monkey (voiced by Travis Willingham) – An elderly monkey who lives in Hedgehog Village. He is a doddering old coot and tends to reminisce a lot about the past.
• Perci (voiced by Cindy Robinson) – An independent bandicoot who lives in Hedgehog Village with her twin sister Staci. In Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, she is depicted as the latest in a long line of the village's protectors.
• Process Server (voiced by Bill Freiberger) – A cat who hands out subpoenas.
• Professor Cluckins (voiced by Roger Craig Smith) – An aristocratic rodent and a close associate of Admiral Beaverton.
• Professor Kingsford (voiced by Kirk Thornton) – A bulldog and a well-respected, yet feared, Evil Science professor.
• Rabbit Girl (voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey) – A hip, yet condescending teenage rabbit, and a resident of Hedgehog Village. She works in the cosmetic store in Hedgehog Village's spa.
• Redd Heron (voiced by Kirk Thornton) – A red heron and a traveling insurance adjuster who has recently moved to Hedgehog Village.
• Reindeer Girl – A young reindeer and a resident of Hedgehog Village.
• Salty (voiced by Kirk Thornton) – A large hippo who works as a bouncer for hire. In Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, he acts as a sea captain and has a strong rivalry with his twin brother Pepper.
• Shadow the Hedgehog (voiced by Kirk Thornton) - A powerful black hedgehog capable of super speed and teleportation. He is idolized by Eggman for his popularity within the series, but Shadow does not share his enthusiasm. In Sonic Boom, Shadow is much more aggressive and vengeful than other versions of him; he considers friendship a sign of weakness and is determined to defeat Sonic at all costs. In Sonic Boom, Shadow has extended red markers on both his shoes and gloves and has cow-licked quills like Sonic.
• Sheep Villager (voiced by Kirk Thornton) – A sheep and a resident of Hedgehog Village.
• Soar the Eagle (voiced by Travis Willingham) – A blue eagle and local actorbird on Seaside Island. He also hosts seminars as a motivational speaker and life coach.
• Staci (voiced by Nika Futterman) – A bandicoot and Perci's younger twin sister. While strong of character like Perci, she has a more self-centered and independent mindset.
• Stratford (voiced by Cindy Robinson) – A young walrus and Lady Walrus' eldest child.
• Stunt Bears – A trained brown bear and gray bear duo that serve as T.W. Barker's loyal henchmen, stunt performers, and circus performers.
• T.W. Barker (voiced by Kirk Thornton) – A wolf and conman who serves as the ring master at "T.W. Barker's Circus of Wonders" where its performers are kept against their wills. He also serves as a shady lawyer, as seen in "Don't Judge Me" , where he worked as Dr. Eggman's lawyer when it came to suing Sonic for the injuries that were afflicted onto Eggman.
• Team Cybonic – A group of cyborg clones of Team Sonic created by Bolts to stop Hypnobot. Currently, they serve as the protectors of Roboken.
  • Cyborg Sonic (voiced by Roger Craig Smith) - Sonic's cyborg counterpart, and the leader of Team Cybonic.
  • Cyborg Tails (voiced by Collen O'Shaughnessey) – Tails' cyborg counterpart.
  • Cyborg Knuckles (voiced by Travis Willingham) – Knuckles' cyborg counterpart.
  • Cyborg Amy (voiced by Cindy Robinson) – Amy's cyborg counterpart.
  • Cyborg Sticks (voiced by Nika Futterman) – Sticks' cyborg counterpart.
• Tommy Thunder (voiced by Wally Wingert) – A tiger and the star of the Tommy Thunder film series. While boasting a lot of bravado, he is actually a selfish coward.
• UT (voiced by Roger Craig Smith) – A robot created by Tails that can read minds by translating the subtext in people's speech.
• Vector the Crocodile (voiced by Keith Silverstein) – A crocodile who works as a private detective and reality TV star. While money-minded, he has a strong sense of justice and is dedicated to solving his cases. Like the other Sonic game characters, Vector has been redesigned for Sonic Boom, now sporting an arm tattoo and a leather jacket in place of his traditional headphones.
• Walrus Camera Man – A walrus and the main camera man for Seaside Island's television network.
• Walrus Male (voiced by Kirk Thornton) – A walrus and a blue collar working stiff.
• Warthog Male (voiced by Kirk Thornton) – A warthog working as the masseur in Hedgehog Village's spa.
• Wild Cat (voiced by Wally Wingert) – An orange cat who lives in Hedgehog Village.
• Wolf Policeman (voiced by Wally Wingert) – An auburn wolf and a police officer from the police force in Hedgehog Village.
• Wolf Sidekick (voiced by Wally Wingert) – A red wolf and the sidekick of Comedy Chimp. He is also the cohost of the Comedy Chimp Show.
• Wolfie (voiced by Kirk Thornton) – A gray wolf who lives in Hedgehog Village.
• Zooey (voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey) – A yellow vixen who lives in Hedgehog Village, and Tails' love interest.

Reception

Common Sense Media gave Sonic Boom 4 out of 5 stars. Internet Movie Database also known as IMDB gives this series a rating of 7.9/10 based on 4789 ratings. Critics pointed the show out for being a bit violent for children and making usage of name-calling, but praised it for its light humor and recurring themes about friendship and teamwork. Sonic Boom later won the award for Best Animation at the 2017 Chico Independent Film Festival, namely under the director, Natalys Raut-Sieuzac.

Sonic Boom was also selected for the annual Export Awards of 2017 in France, which rewards the best-selling french television programs worldwide. On 20 June 2017, Sonic Boom was nominated for a "Teen Choice" award for animated TV shows, but lost to Family Guy. On 27 August 2017, Filmchilla awarded Sonic Boom with "Best Series."

Trivia

• This is the first Sonic the Hedgehog television series to have fully computer-generated (CG) animation.
• The intro sequence for the show in the United States is actually a shortened version of the actual intro sequence. This full intro sequence is used in France. According to Bill Freiberger, this is because the two countries' channels (Cartoon Network and Gulli respectively) have different delivery requirements.
  • The intro shows all the main characters in order of appearance with Sonic being first, then Tails, Amy, Knuckles and finally Sticks.
    • The order of appearance for each character could probably be based on their respective debut in the main series, with Sonic being the first (1991), Tails being the second (1992), Amy the third (1993), Knuckles the fourth (1994) and Sticks as the last (2014).
• Although it was confirmed that OuiDO! was to produce the show, the first reveal of the show credited the company's original name, Genao Productions. OuiDO! was later acquired by Technicolor and they are now credited with producing the show under the name Technicolor Animation Productions.
• Each episode in the Sonic Boom television series takes about eighteen months to produce.
• When writing episodes, the staff break the stories together by writing the scripts separately and then doing a group punch-up session at the end.
• The max allotted time the staff has for the recording session of a Sonic Boom episode is four hours, every two weeks. Actors that are absent at the appointed time are recorded next time. The lines themselves are recorded over a year before the episode airs.
• This is the third Sonic the Hedgehog animation to be produced by Sega; the first being Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie and the second being Sonic X. This is also the second Sonic the Hedgehog animation to be made in France, the first being Sonic Underground.
• The show received a graphical update beginning in season 2. Animal characters now have hair-textures in their fur, Eggman has more definition in his skin. most forms of clothing now feature some form of material texturing. The animation also became smoother and less instantanious.
• Very similar to the canon of the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog television series, every episode (not including multi-parters) will be a standalone.
  • However, there is still a sense of continuity, with the events of past episodes referenced in subsequent episodes.
• A number of Sonic Boom video games have been given a timeline placement in accordance to the television series:
  • Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal are prequels to the series.
  • Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice takes place sometime during season two of the series.
• It is the longest time to wait for a new show in the series - eight years passed from the original airing of the last episode of Sonic X (2003-2006) to air the first episode of Sonic Boom.
• The voices of the Team Sonic (except Sticks) and of Dr. Eggman in the Portuguese Brazilian dub are the same as the voices of Sonic X while the main French Voice Cast (with the execption of Vector) also reprise their roles from Sonic X since Sonic Generations.
• Bill Freiberger said that the developers have no rights to use characters from non-Sonic Boom versions of Sonic, meaning no Archie Comics characters, no characters from the other TV series in any Sonic-related media and no characters from games outside the main series.
• The staff does not use locations from the Sonic games as more than references or dialogue jokes in the TV series.
• When creating characters for the show, the writers do not tend to specify the characters' species unless it is motivated by the story. Instead, they leave the animation team to decide the design.
• In several episodes where written text is showcased, the words and sentences either appear obscured or are written in gibberish. Bill Freiberger has explained that Sonic Boom does not show words because it is an international coproduction and thus needs to play in many different languages.
• In Singapore, Sonic Boom's first season is treated as two separate seasons.
• Throughout the first season Orbot's and Cubot's voices were changing from lower-pitched to higher-pitched in the Russian dub.
• In Finland, the show was available on Ruutu.fi called web page, where all broadcasts can be watched afterwards. The show was available to be watched for Ruutu+ having users during April. The show's real starting date in Finland is September 5, 2016.
• Although the second season of Sonic Boom premiered on Cartoon Network on October 29, 2016, the trailer for the second season first came out on November 17, 2016, five days after its debut on Boomerang and one day before the premiere of "Spacemageddonocalypse" on the same channel.
• Hulu lists the episodes in broadcast order while Netflix (internationally) and iTunes list the episodes in production order.
• Additionally, Hulu lists every two episodes of Season 1 as one show (similar to how the show originally aired its first 6 episodes) making the number of episodes listed as 26, while Netflix lists each episode individually and lists 52 episodes.
  • However, Season 2 episodes are listed individually on Hulu (listing 52 total episodes).
• A cat screech can be heard in every episode of season two with the exception of "The Haunted Lair".
• Sonic Boom, to this point, is currently the Sonic the Hedgehog TV series with the most episodes.
• The concept logo for Sonic Boom in the Behind The Scenes video shows the icon from Sonic X.
• Sonic Boom is the second Sonic television show to have a theme song without lyrics. The first was Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
