Gameplay[]

New features[]

  • The game now features an English voice cast, along with subtitles in that language.[1][2]

Changes[]

Reception[]

The game received a lukewarm reception from editors at IGN. Douglass Perry applauded Sonic's improved controls, saying that the Japanese version in comparison was like "a seven-year-old on a bike for the first time with no training wheels [...] [and] a jet turbine strapped to it and no wings and no crash pad".[2] Anoop Gantayat, while having only played through Casinopolis, noted the great improvement over the camera and the feeling of "[being] more in control over the environment", while also pointing out the lack of flickering at the end of the tornado section in Windy Valley that was present in the original version. Gantayat also thought that the English dub was not bad, but also not great either, applauding the new voice of Dr. Robotnik but criticizing those of Amy, Tails and the in-game female announcer.[1]

Despite Sonic Adventure: Limited Edition's improved gameplay, it also received criticism: Gantayat was disappointed at the lack of American music and how the soundtrack was still the same as in the Japanese version.[1] Perry was more critical; he said that he got "mixed" feelings about the game that were different from those he had with Super Mario 64, making questions he did not make with the latter, such as whether Sonic was made, and would work and succeed, in 3D. He also said that the camera was bothering to no end in enclosed sections. Furthermore, Perry noted that playing a Sonic game as an adventure title, rather than a straight-forward 2D game, felt "strange", comparing the walking around enormous 3D environments and the picking objects up to a gameplay designed for Tomb Raiser, and saying that the game was not that fun either way. He concluded by saying that Sonic Adventure: Limited Edition is "a real roller-coaster of a game that'll bring you new thrills no other game can", but that it stood no chance at dethroning Mario.[2]
