Help Sonic collect rings and avoid bombs in his quest for the Chaos Emeralds!

— Tagline[1]

Sonic's Bonus Game is a web browser game made available on the Sega website in 1997. It is based on the Special Stages from the Sega Mega Drive version of Sonic 3D Blast. The game was used for contests on the Sega website, in promotion of the Sega Saturn and its games, though it was removed in 1999.

Sonic's Bonus Game is a runner game where the player takes control of Sonic the Hedgehog. The game features three rounds that is made up of a single bridge, each one with three sections (aka "levels") to play through. The goal of the game is to complete all three rounds in the game. Upon completing the third level in a round, the player is able to move onto the next round.

During gameplay, Sonic will be stuck running forward without being able to slow down or stop. HIs only options are to move to the sides or jump. Along the way, Sonic can collect rings which lie scattered along the bridge. Along the path are also bombs, each of which will subtract five rings from the player's ring count in case Sonic makes contact with them. Collecting rings and completing rounds reward the player with points which are tallied up on the result screen.

In order to clear a round in Sonic's Bonus Game, the player must collect a set amount of rings that appear on the rounds' bridges before reaching one of three checkpoints, which are marked with a pair of flagpoles. The Ring requirements for each checkpoint remain the same in all rounds (50, 100, then 150 rings). When the player gets close to a checkpoint in a level, a tally will appear on the HUD that tells how many Rings the player has left to collect. After passing the third checkpoint, the player will receive a Chaos Emerald and move onto the next round. If Sonic has not gathered enough rings when reaching a checkpoint however, the player will receive a Game Over and be sent to the result screen where their total score is tallied up. The player's score is determined by the rings and Chaos Emeralds they have collected. Also, in case the player gets a Game Over, they will have to start over from the beginning.

The player can choose between two sets of rounds in Sonic's Bonus Game: "Knuckles Special Stage" and "Tails Special Stage". Aside from the differently colored backgrounds of each set of rounds however, the rounds and their levels are identical.

The game also features a "How to Play" menu where the player can learn the basics of the game via slides, and a "High Scores" menu where the player can see their highest scores from earlier playthroughs.
