Solaris is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs. It is the god of time, light, and fire who was worshiped by the residents of Soleanna, hailing it as their patron deity and held an annual ceremony to ask for its loving light and not its destructive fire.[1]

History

No one knows where Solaris came from; some believe it is one of the Ixis Masterworks, while others believe it has always existed.[1]

Ten years ago, Solaris was a small white flame in the research labs of Soleanna. There, the Duke of Soleanna and his researchers were experimenting with Solaris in an attempt to harness its time-warping powers. In the process however, they split Solaris in half, creating two evil spirits - Mephiles, who consisted of Solaris' power and intelligence, and Iblis, who that was Solaris' fiery power and destructive nature. Before Solaris' halves could wreak havoc, Mephiles was trapped within the Scepter of Darkness by Shadow the Hedgehog and Iblis was sealed by the Duke inside his daughter, Princess Elise through the use of a Chaos Emerald which killed the Duke in the process.[1]

Years later, Mephiles was released from the Scepter of Darkness and created a two hundred year long plan to revive Solaris which brought him the seven Chaos Emeralds, saw the death of Sonic the Hedgehog and released Iblis. With the power of the Chaos Emeralds, Mephiles rejoined Iblis and Solaris was reborn. Solaris then began to devour time, its eyes opening across time and space, but an alliance between heroes and villains managed to recover the Chaos Emeralds, revive Sonic and see to Solaris's defeat. Sonic and Elise were then sent back to the days before Solaris was experimented on. Elise took the tiny white flame and blew it out, thus ensuring the disastrous split never occurred and that Solaris never came to be.[1]

Despite this time paradox seems to have safely dealt with Solaris, it is suspected it could have slipped through a crack in time.[1]

Powers and abilities

As a god of time, Solaris possessed time-warping powers. It was also able to perceive everything across time and space and could consume time as localized black holes.[1]

Trivia

  • "Solaris" is a Latin word meaning "pertaining to the sun".
  • Solaris was first hinted to have existed within the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book universe when Ian Flynn confirmed that the events of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) had occurred in the comics on his Ask Ian discussion board. It was first later in Sonic the Hedgehog: The Complete Sonic Comic Encyclopedia that Solaris was officially revealed to have existed, along with details about its history.
  • The Archie Comics was originally going to have Solaris be in the main story of the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series. However, the character was scrapped, and only an artwork picture is left of the idea.
