The Sol Emeralds are not... chatty. If they directed me here, it was for a purpose.

Blaze the Cat, Sonic the Hedgehog #4

The Sol Emeralds[1] are objects mentioned in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. They are a set of seven differently colored emeralds of great power from Blaze's world, and the inter-dimensional counterparts to the Chaos Emeralds. They are protected by their appointed guardian, Blaze the Cat, who keeps them close to her at all time.[2]

Description

Powers and traits

Possessing immense power, the Sol Emeralds have been noted by Sonic to hold the same properties as the Chaos Emeralds, except their powers are "fiery".[1] Harnessing all seven Sol Emeralds will bestow a person with a Super State-like transformation, a form that grants increased innate talents and other powers, like flight and invulnerability. However, it is implied that only their appointed guardian is able to tap into their power.[2] Furthermore, after using them to transform, the Sol Emeralds' power will be diminished for an unknown period of time, thus rendering them unable to initiate another transformation.[3]

The Sol Emeralds appear to possess a degree of sentience, although they are not exactly "chatty". They also have a connection to, and an unspoken understanding with their guardian, who claims to be able to “feel their will”.[1] They also allow their wielder dimensional travel between Sonic's world and Blaze's world.[2]

History

Past

For some time, the Sol Emeralds have been protected by their guardian, Blaze the Cat.

Fallout

Eventually, the Sol Emeralds instructed Blaze to come to Sonic's world to help prevent a "terrible event" that would befall it.[1] Using the Sol Emeralds, Blaze was able to transport herself to Sonic's world. There, Blaze informed Sonic that the Sol Emeralds had instructed her to do, believed to be Eggman's total takeover, which Blaze ended up being about seven months late for. Nonetheless, Blaze decided to remain on Sonic's world until her services were indeed required.[2]

Battle For Angel Island

This wait would pay off when Neo Metal Sonic rose up after the Eggman War to take over Angel Island. In Resistance HQ, Blaze showed the Sol Emeralds while offering to confront Neo as Burning Blaze. However, Tails discouraged that idea, suspecting that Neo Metal Sonic could take advantage of the Sol Emeralds by copying Blaze's powers. Instead, Blaze was assigned to help breaking the Egg Fleet's control over Angel Island. When the time came, Blaze used the Sol Emeralds to turn into Burning Blaze.[2] Once Blaze was done and de-transformed, the Sol Emeralds' power was rendered diminished, meaning they could not power Blaze up again for the battle against Master Overlord.[3]

Etymology

"Sol" translates to "sun" in a variety of languages, like the Latin root word "sol", and is the origin of the word "solar." This means that the Sol Emeralds translate to "solar emeralds."
