Sonic Lost World Website[1]

Sky Road (スカイロード Sukairōdo?) is the sixth world that appears in Sonic Lost World. Located at the Lost Hex, Sky Road is located right by Windy Hill (left) and Lava Mountain (above). It is essentially a zone high above the skies where ancient ruins and floating platforms are located. There are two variations of this stage: one is a peaceful, daytime-like zone while the other zone takes place in a darker surrounding area, where thunderstorms and ruined cities are seen in the background.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Lost World, the player can find Black Material in the zones if the player finishes the stage successfully.

Description

Wii U/PC version

Zone 1

Zone 1 is set in an area similar to Windy Hill in aesthetics and design, but set in the sky with some noticeable differences, such as pink versions of the Caterkiller that burrow through planetoids and waterfalls. The Zone also makes use of the Crimson Eagle. While traveling on, Sonic will meet the Gustav Turtle which shoots out missiles at the Clouds and the player must use Sonic's head to push the missile back at it. Reaching the end of the Zone breaks the Capsule, and frees all the animals within it.

Zone 2

This zone is a 2.5D Zone that has ruins of Silent Forest. While proceeding on through the Zone, mechanical dragons appear to either shoot Sonic down with fire balls, use lasers to shock him, or use their robotic parts to knock platforms out. As the player reaches the cannon, he/she appears on a planetoid to fight with Zavok on his own mechanical dragon.

Zone 3

This is an auto-scrolling Zone where Sonic flies through the air like in Tropical Coast Zone ?. By holding down the Homing Attack button, Sonic will curl into a ball and descend, while letting go makes him ascend. The player has to avoid Badniks as they soar through the air and eventually encounter a BFB that must be defeated to clear the Zone.

Zone 4

Zone 4, based on Desert Ruins with a stormy background and streams of sand, is one of the longest Zones in the game, spanning many sections. The first and fifth sections require Sonic to scale 2.5D towers filled with obstacles such as Boos, Ball Hogs, trampolines and disappearing sand blocks. He must be careful not to backtrack in these sections, as the camera will not scroll down, resulting in instant death. The third section is similar, but the player goes down instead of up, going down sand slides and avoiding Gohlas. The Magenta Rhythm can also be used to climb the towers here.

In between each tower ascent/descent is a giant sand slide played from a 3D perspective where Sonic has to avoid spiked balls, Badniks, cacti and falling off. There are poles in which Sonic can grab onto so he can move along, but some them are unstable and will break after a few seconds. The first 3D slide is played from behind Sonic, while the second one is played with the camera in front of Sonic. At the very end of the Zone, the player must face off with Zavok atop a mechanical dragon.

Zone ?

In Zone ?, Sonic has to travel along disappearing green blocks throughout the sky, avoiding Badniks and spiked balls. There are plenty of rings and extra lives to collect, so a Lightning Shield is recommended for this Zone.

Nintendo 3DS version

Zone 1

Zone 1 has the player go through a casino area like those seen in Frozen Factory Zone 3 in the Wii U/PC version, but from a 2.5D perspective. The key difference here is a giant Bingo table which requires the player to flip tiles and make lines, eventually opening the way forward. Other obstacles include Fans that blow the player upward and Badniks. The Cyan Laser also appears here.

Zone 2

Zone 2 continues through the casino, but this time it is in 3D. Most of the Zone revolves around using the Indigo Asteroid to ascend higher and higher, eventually leaving the casino and reaching the clouds.

Zone 3

Zone 3 has the player fly through the skies on top of rockets that are controlled using the gyroscope on the 3DS system to travel between pieces of land. However, there will be many obstacles in the sky such as Badniks and spike balls that will knock Sonic off the rockets, resulting in the hedgehog falling to his demise. There are also lengthy areas which require extensive use of Parkour to pass through them. Also throughout the Zone are the mechanical dragons from the Wii U/PC version's Zone 2, who will pop out of clouds and try to shoot Sonic out of the sky with giant fireballs.

Boss

Unlike the Zavok boss fights in the Wii U version, Sonic must take out Zavok by skydiving. Zavok rides his mechanical dragon the entire time as a way to take out Sonic.

Other game appearances

Sonic Runners

SR-9

Tails in Sky Road.

In Sonic Runners, Sky Road appears as a course available after clearing Episode 10, or any time it's available in Ranking's mode. The area is best suited for Flight Type characters. It looks visually similar to it's appearance in Sonic Lost World and has the distinct touch of changing the time of day depending on how far the player has progressed in the level.

Trivia

  • Sky Road Zone 3 is similar to Sky Sanctuary Zone from Sonic & Knuckles.
  • In the Wii U version of Sonic Lost World, Sky Road also appears to use elements of other zones in the game, with platforms and planets from Windy Hill, small ruins from Desert Ruins and stone platforms and a planet with a large tree from Silent Forest. In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Lost World, Sky Road appears to use elements of other zones in the game, with platforms and planets from Windy Hill and the Casino-based area from Frozen Factory Zone 3 of the Wii U version.
  • The music from Zone 2 (Wii U)/Zone 3 (3DS) sounds similar to the daytime music of Chun-Nan's Dragon Road from Sonic Unleashed.
