Eggman sets off in the smog in the sky. What on earth is in there? Sonic bravely jumps into the thunders and the roaring clouds.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit)[1]

Sky Base Zone (スカイベース[1] Sukai Bēsu?, lit. "Sky Base") is the sixth and final Zone of Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit). As with all other stages in the game, Sky Base Zone consists of two platforming Acts followed by a shorter, third Act which contains the boss. The unusual feature here is that the distinct Acts have completely different backgrounds and level designs.

Description[]

Sky Base Zone is, true to its name, a base that takes place in the sky, littered with construction girders and platforms that move when the player stand on them, guarded by cannons that shoot diagonally and gems that redirect the lightning from the thunderstorms. At the end of the first act, the zeppelin, which the player infiltrate in the second act of Sky Base Zone is the actual Sky Base itself, with a plethora of cannons, propellers, and more cannons.

Story[]

After getting onboard Sky Base Zone, Sonic ventures through the blimp. Eventually, he enters a room where he finds and confronts Dr. Robotnik. After being defeated, the doctor escapes to Green Hill Zone via a teleporter while Sonic takes the same teleporter and damages his Egg Mobile.

Gameplay[]

The gameplay of Sky Base Zone is more difficult than all the other zones in Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit), as the platforming is tight, narrow, and the hazards in the zone can easily dispose the player's rings or push them off into the abyss, and the enemies are also placed in difficult spots.

Overview[]

Act 1[]

In Sky Base Zone Act 1, the player has to navigate their way through various exposed gantries and electric fields of the airship anchorage. Unidasus and Bombs are the only known enemy to appear in Sky Base Zone, but the Unidasus behave more like Uni Unis. Cannons are also plentiful, but they only fire a stream of four shots when they get close to them. At the end of the act is the zeppelin which the player ride on in the next act.

Act 2[]

In Sky Base Zone Act 2, Sonic, without any rings to protect him throughout the level, must brave the fearsome defenses on board the zeppelin itself; cannons, propeller blades, and of course the ever-present threat of falling thousands of feet to oblivion. To get the emerald in this zone, the player must wait a while for a platform to appear below the start of the act. After that, the player must ride the platforms and hop into the next ones that appear, until finally reaching the emerald. However, the emerald is also guarded by cannons that fire huge cannonballs straight ahead.

Act 3[]

In Sky Base Zone Act 3, the player has to run down a slope to reach the final boss.

Boss[]

The final boss of Sky Base Zone, from the Sega Master System version of Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit).

The final fight of Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit) takes place in some sort of electric chamber within the bowels of the airship. Robotnik observes proceedings from inside a glass case, while Sonic must dodge scrolling pillars of electricity and the occasional energy sphere which the Doctor fires in his direction. Simply dodge the attacks and attack Robotnik's position when the lightning generator deactivates. The boss is different on Game Gear, utilizing flamethrowers, and the pattern does not change when it is close to defeat.

Trivia[]

  • Act 2 is the only segment with a unique musical score. Act 1 and the interior of the airship reuse the music from Scrap Brain Zone.
