Plot[]
The episode starts off with Eggforcers patrolling the streets of New Yoke City, and Squad Commander Red initiating a plan; Operation:Cheese. The Eggforcers suspect rebel activity, and identify a Resistance icon, only to notice that its a trap. Renegade Knucks and the other Resistance members catch them off guard and open heavy fire. This alerts the attention of Rusty Rose and other Eggforcers. Rusty arrives on the scene, taking out a rooftop Resistance member, before recording the battle around her. Meanwhile, Sonic falls from the sky, just being transported there from the Boscage Maze, and Rusty notices him. The part of the vine Sonic tripped on that got stuck to his shoes broke his fall and he realizes he's back in New Yoke. Knucks cries out to rally the resistance members, landing in front of Sonic, and the opening theme plays.
The battle resumes with Knucks and the Resistance trashing any Eggforcer that comes their way, and Sonic comments that New Yoke isn't how he remembered it. Knucks finally notices Sonic in the midst of the battle and comments that he thought he'd never see him here again. Sonic defensively states that it wasn't his intention to leave them, but rather, the Shard had warped him to another place with another him and another battle. Rusty captures everything Sonic says on video. Knucks is confused about the Shard, thinking of the Energy Crystal that powers New Yoke, and Sonic confirms that the Energy Crystal was it. Rusty seems intrigued about this 'Shard' as well. Sonic pivots the conversation, asking Knucks if he knew where Nine was because he needed to ask him about another Shard, but Knucks replies saying you could ask him the same thing, before turning his attention back to the ongoing battle, and consecutively Spin-Attacking several Eggforcers. Sonic compliments his attack before jauntily jumping on top of the pile of broken Eggforcer parts and repelling them backwards by running in place, allowing the Resistance to advance forwards, and the remaining Eggforcers to retreat. While Sonic and the Resistance celebrate their victory, Rusty disappears. Knucks is still not happy about Sonic bailing on them the last time and motions for him to follow him, before telling the rest of the Resistance to scatter.
Meanwhile, the Chaos Council are voicing their frustrations over the growing rebellion in the city, when Rusty returns and tells them that Sonic has returned, and shows them the footage she captured. At the mention of another world, Mister Doctor Eggman immediately becomes interested, wondering what he meant by 'Shard', in which Dr. Don't states it's obviously the Energy Crystal. Then, when Sonic mentions another Shard, the Council becomes ecstatic about the idea of using more than one Shard to be able to power their city, and decides they need to find Sonic as soon as possible. Rusty reveals that Sonic was, in fact, is in Dr. Deep's district due to tracing his energy signature, underground in the Resistance headquarters where Rebel had been waiting to talk to him.
She sarcastically welcomes him back and Sonic notes that he can feel a lot of negative vibes coming from her. She agrees and goes on to tell him how could she not when he apparently used them to get to the Shard and deserting them once he had what he wanted. Sonic defends himself by saying that he didn't use them and didn't take the shard either. Knucks interrupts and informs him that Nine did before leaving them for dead. Sonic seems shocked by this revelation, but Knucks and Rebel don't care, instead contemplating aloud why they ever trusted him. A flashback then cues, cutting to when they had infiltrated the Council's Mothership. It shows that how right after Sonic disappeared when touching the Shard, Nine had taken it for himself, disabling all power in the city, but only for a moment, due to the backup generators activating. While the Council was distracted, Nine escaped, and Rebel and Knucks looked excited that he had the Shard and came back for them, but upon hearing the Council's shouts, Nine decides to just grab it and go, much to the duo's frustration. Knucks got so angry that his rage fueled power allowed to blow through any bots in his way. He escaped with Rebel right before Rusty overrides her system and regains her original programming. From there, Denizen 1998 helped them recover, and Rebel explains that many people in the city had heard about their mission and joined their cause.
Sonic is shocked at Rebel's encounter and comments how he'd been gone a day and they already have a whole army, and Rebel replies in frustration and tells him he's been missing for weeks. This causes Sonic to notice that time moves differently between New Yoke and the Boscage Maze. Knucks states that it doesn't matter, and they were going to finish the Council while they didn't have the Shard. Sonic exclaims that Nine would never let that happen, and Knucks assures him that if Sonic tells him where he is it wouldn't. Sonic guarantees he doesn't know where Nine is, but Knucks says he 'smells baloney' and to 'put the screws to em', with another resistance member agreeing. Sonic jokes that screws and baloney would taste terrible, and Rebel snaps that he's joking with them after everything they've been through. She then presses a button on her wrist and a capsule with a palm tree rises from the ground, much to Sonic and the other Resistance members' surprise and awe. Rebel explains it's a symbol of the life they deserve, and Knucks adding bleakly that if they lose this fight, there wouldn't be anything left to fight for. Upon seeing the palm, Sonic becomes downcast as it reminds him of Green Hill and Amy's gift to him. He apologizes that he wasn't there when they needed him and explains that neither him nor Nine were traitors, and that he'd prove it to them by fighting with them. Suddenly, they are interrupted by shaking on the surface and realize the Chaos Council had found them. Rebel secures the palm tree and orders everyone to the surface before their HQ is compromised. Sonic watches the palm tree be sealed away, determination on his face to make things right. The Eggforcers advance on the Rebels and the Resistance do their best to drive them back with their lasers and plasma cannons, but Dr. Babble, Dr. Deep, and Mister Doctor Eggman are there with their mechs, holding off Sonic and the Resistance members. When hope is beginning to seem lost, a portal opens up and Nine emerges in a flying contraption, the Shattercraft, and tells Sonic to hang on, much to everyone's surprise, with Sonic commenting that he may have been inspired by the Tornado that he mentioned when he and Nine first met.
The Chaos Council notices that Nine was the one who stole the Shard and opened the portal, and so they redirected their focus on him. Sonic zips away, saving the Resistance members being held hostage before taking off after Nine. He Spin Attacks several Eggforcers to get up to the height of the Shattercraft, and Nine lets him in. Sonic praises him on his ability to show up right when they needed him, but becomes confused when Nine opens up another energy portal and they leave New Yoke. Sonic scolds him for abandoning their friends but loses his train of thought when he recognizes that they were in the space he goes when he travels between worlds. Nine tells Sonic that he calls them 'Shatterspaces'. Sonic agrees that it was very cool, but they really needed to get back to the fight in New Yoke. Nine disagrees to go anywhere until Sonic tells him where he's been. Sonic gears up for the story and it cuts to a quick montage of what happened after he touched the red Shard, with him being transported to the Boscage Maze and meeting another version of Tails, then being transported back to New Yoke, and him showing up in the Shattercraft. Nine nods and confirms this, saying that ever since Sonic left, he suspected there was more to the Shard than he suspected. He shows it to Sonic, confirming that he had taken it, (and hacked their schematics), so that he could create his Shatter Drive and travel the Shatterverse as he pleased. Sonic once again assures Nine that this was incredibly cool and all, but they urgently needed to get back to New Yoke, but Nine wants to show Sonic what he'd found first. Soon, they enter through a purple Gateway and land in a barren wasteland of red sands, teal skies, and hexagonal silvery rock clumps. Sonic is astonished at the new world, and Nine excitedly tells him he named it 'The Grim'.
Sonic hops out to admire the surroundings, and notices that his shoes have once again changed color and form based on the environment. Nine notices as well, commenting on how fascinating Prism Energy was. Sonic warily looks around and tells Nine to look out for other versions of themselves, but Nine assures him that there was absolutely no one else there, the perfect clean slate for them to start over and build their own world. Sonic doesn't seem the very excited with the idea, and instead once again pleads for Nine to take him back to New Yoke. Nine looks angry at the fact that Sonic isn't listening to him on his big idea, and retorts that New Yoke brought him nothing but misery, and he owed nothing to it, but reluctantly agreed to bring Sonic back. He opens up a portal and Sonic cracks a half-hearted smile, saying he hoped to see Nine back in New Yoke. Whilst heading back to New Yoke through the Void, he heard someone calling for him.
Back in the city, the Rebels are doing their best to fend off the Eggforcers, but they soon run out of ammo, and are cornered by Dr. Babble, Deep, Mister Doctor Eggman, and their mechs. The Doctors order the Rebels to either surrender the Shard or tell them where Sonic went. Renegade and Rebel assure them that they don't have either piece of information, and even if they did, they would never spill it. The doctors threaten to spill something else, and Knucks almost makes a disrespectful comment, but Sonic's portal opens up, and he comes shooting out of it, knocking all three Doctors back and landing with the rebels. They don't look particularly happy about him vanishing again, but Sonic says they should focus on beating the Chaos Council, and then decide if he was a traitor. The trio of heroes go after the three Doctors, but Dr. Babble furiously swats them away. Sonic retorts for him to play nice before smashing into him, and teasing it was past his bedtime.
Dr. Deep retaliates by slashing his katanas and knocking Sonic back, and Rebel scoops him a second before he would've been crushed by Mister Doctor Eggman's mech, and throws him back at it. Knucks, returns with a grappling hook and whips it around the mechs leg, with other Resistance members doing the same with the other leg and both pulling. Sonic smirks, admitting that he loved this game as he grabs onto the rope as well. One of the Resistance members orders for him to 'hit the jets', and due to Sonics' speed, the mech ends up doing the splits and falling over. All the while, Dr. Deep is grappling with Rebel, and she struggles to dodge his katanas in the air. Dr. Babble also finally recovers as well, and attempts to stomp on Sonic and the rebels. He zips them away in the nick of time, only to get clobbered a second later. Dr. Deep kicks Rebel to the ground and Renegade rushes to save her, only to be held at sword-point by Dr. Deep. Defeated and exhausted, the trio are held by the Doctors, and they threaten Sonic to hand over the Shard, and tell them about the other worlds. Sonic acts bored and pretends he has no idea what their talking about, but Rusty breaks his faƧade by appearing, and at first Sonic is excited to see her, assuming that she'd help him out of his predicament, but she explains that she was back under her original programming and loyal to the Council. She then proceeds to play the video from the beginning of the episode and Sonic shrinks as he realizes he's cornered.
Just as the Council is about to harm them, Nine shows up in the Shattercraft, redirecting the Council's focus onto himself, and knocking Sonic free. Rusty realizes Nine has the Shard and the Council realize that with the Shard, they could travel to different worlds as well, and make it their priority to capture the Shattercraft. Dr. Deep and Babble engage with the Rebels, while Dr. Don't and Done-It, prepare their Mothership, and Mister Doctor Eggman goes after Nine. Sonic focuses on helping out the Rebels, while Nine provides air support. Mister Doctor Eggman chases Nine through the streets, firing at him, and Nine attempts to escape, only to be distracted by the launching Mothership, and shot down. Nine desperately tries to regain control of his ship, but as he's spiraling down, he gets caught in the Mothership's tractor beam, and sucked up into their ship. Back at the battle, Rusty leaves as she realizes they have Nine, and Sonic and the Rebels finish off the last off the Eggforcers. Rebel comments that she doesn't like how they don't know where Nine is and that the Shard could be anywhere. Sonic agrees to go look for him and exclaims he'd be back in a flash. Finally, Mister Doctor Eggman explains to Nine that now with their Shard and his tech, Nine had handed the universe to them on a silver platter. The episode ends with the three Doctors in the mech laughing as they entered the Mothership, not sticking long enough to notice that Nine was smiling to himself, potentially due to the fact that he managed to keep the purple Shard hidden and out of their reach.
