Archie Comics[]

Silver the Hedgehog, from Sonic Universe #5.
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Silver was a time traveler from Mobius' future who traveled back in time to prevent the devastation of his world. Mentored by an ailing version of Mammoth Mogul and a descendant of Knuckles the Echidna's named Edmund, he sought to save his future by stopping the actions of a "traitor" to the Knothole Freedom Fighters. His first few attempts failed and led to erroneous accusations against Sonic, Rotor Walrus, and Antoine D'Coolette, as well as trips to the alternate realities of Light Mobius and Dark Mobius. Eventually, Mogul sent him back in time to remain there until he identified and stopped the traitor, and he ended up joining the Secret Freedom Fighters. With their aid he was able to determine that Sally Acorn was responsible for the devastation of his time, but not of her own volition-it was due to her being turned into Mecha Sally.
Following the Super Genesis Wave, Silver's history was altered to mirror that of the games, with his future anew. His new job: to close the Genesis Portals created in the Super Genesis Wave's wake subsequently got him involved in Worlds Unite. Afterward, Silver went back to closing Genesis Portals.

Reception[]
Much like how Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) received mostly negative reception, the character of Silver the Hedgehog was likewise not well received at the time. Video game critics from GamesRadar+ listed Silver as one of the ten worst friends of Sonic the Hedgehog and referred to him as a "completely worthless addition to the franchise", blaming the game's writing and English voice actor Pete Capella's performance.[11] Conversely, Play Magazine praised Silver's gameplay for its "entirely fresh perspective" that slowed down the game with new moves and better platforming.[12] Destructoid was aggressive when reacting to Silver's return as a rival character in Sonic Generations, calling him an "incredibly crap character" who deserves to be forgotten.[13]
Despite the initial negativity from critics, Silver has become a favorite among fans of the series. Silver (and his variants, such as Sir Galahad) has become a highly requested character to feature within games.[14][15]

Trivia[]
- When Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) initially released, there were three conflicting backstories for Silver presented from different sources. The game's official website stated that Silver was born in a happy future, but one in danger of being destroyed by evils in the present.[16] The Prima Games strategy guide stated that Silver was born in the present, but somehow ended up in a destroyed future, inspiring him to take the steps necessary to avoid it.[17] The canon story is in the video game proper: Silver was born in a future of Sonic's world that was devastated by Iblis. This remains his backstory even after Solaris was extinguished in the past, as Silver still remembers growing up in the Iblis-torn world; however, he does not remember his partnership with Blaze or their time-traveling adventure.[18]
- At the Q&A panel at Sonic Boom 2012, Takashi Iizuka was asked to clarify the origins of Silver, Blaze, and Eggman Nega, and to explain why Silver and Blaze don't remember each other in Sonic Colors. He confirmed that Silver and Eggman Nega are from the future while Blaze is from another dimension, and that after Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), everyone lost their memories of the events.[19]
- For years, it remained unclear how Silver travels through time. In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), he did so thanks to Mephiles or by performing Dual Chaos Control with Sonic or Shadow, but subsequent games such as Sonic Rivals and Sonic Colors never explained his method. In Sonic Generations, it is assumed that Silver was pulled from the future by the Time Eater, though this is never explicitly stated nor seen (nor is it explained if/how Silver returned home afterwards). A 2019 Sonic Channel calendar description for Silver once claimed he can travel through time using Chaos Control, leaving it vague if this was a reference to Dual Chaos Control or a new use of Chaos Control unique to Silver.[20] According to his profile in the Fast. Friends. Forever. website, Silver actually travels through time by entering mysterious portals that only appear when things in the past go awry.[18]
- Silver is similar to Future Trunks from the Dragon Ball franchise, as both of them are hopeful young warriors who come from an apocalyptic future world and want to change history via time travel. The leaked script of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) indicates that the team originally based Silver on Future Trunks, and Shiro Maekawa, the writer of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), later confirmed this fact.[21]
- Additionally, the PK marks that Silver uses bear a resemblance to the Capsule Corporation logo.
- Some fans have noted that the five quills on Silver's head resemble a cannabis leaf. In reality, his quills were shaped after the Japanese maple leaf, a symbol of peace and prosperity.
- In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Silver's Trophy references the events of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) despite the game not being released on any Nintendo console. He is also the only hedgehog whose Trophy can only be obtained once, as Shadow and Amy's Trophies are obtained randomly and Sonic's Trophies are won by clearing Classic Mode.
- Sonic, Shadow, and Silver all have the exact same height and weight: 3'3" (1 m) and 77 lb (35 kg).
- Silver is the only rival boss in the console/PC version of Sonic Generations who does not face the player at his original location, as he is fought in Crisis City instead. He is also the only rival boss to fight Sonic for fun in subsequent rematches, rather than having a score to settle like Metal Sonic or Shadow.
- Despite many fans having speculated that Silver is related to Shadow due to Sir Lancelot and Sir Galahad's relationship in Arthurian lore (where the latter is the son of the former), Takashi Iizuka has confirmed that Silver is not a descendant of Shadow the Hedgehog.[22]
- Silver was planned to appear in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing as a playable racer alongside Rouge, Vector, Espio and Blaze, but was scrapped from final product.[23]
- In Team Sonic Racing, Silver is the only hedgehog who is a Technique Type instead of a Speed Type.
- In the Japanese version of Team Sonic Racing, the lost adventure of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) is referenced in dialogue between Silver and Sonic. Sonic notices Silver's hesitance and asks him where the determination he had when they first met is; he even references Silver's dialogue, noting that Silver declared he would "destroy" him. Silver is confused, having forgotten the encounter entirely, and Sonic interrupts him to say the race is about to start.[24]
- Silver's favourite thing about the natural world is the skies, with blue skies being his particular favourite.[5][25] Silver's admiration for skies has been mentioned since his debut in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).[26] It is also brought up in several other games and media, such as the Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colors, the Japanese version of Sonic Forces, the Mario & Sonic series, and Otherworld Comedy.[27][28][29]
- Similarly to how Sonic is commonly associated with the blue Chaos Emerald, Silver appears to be associated with the white Emerald. After obtaining it from the Duke of Soleanna, he tried to use it to seal away Iblis, and later collected it in End of the World in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). In Sonic Generations, Silver holds onto the white Emerald until Sonic defeats him and he gives it to him. Silver finds this Emerald in the 2021 cover stories from Sonic Channel, and uses its power to lift a bridge back into place. Silver is also associated with the Emerald in merchandise, with FiGPiN and Zen Monkey Studios using the white Emerald for Silver in their pin collections, and Jakks Pacific giving Super Silver the first white Chaos Emerald in their line of figures.
- Patterns associated with Silver appear in ancient technology in several games. In Sonic Generations, Sky Sanctuary has stone pillars with lines resembling those on Silver's cuffs, and at the start of the stage, there is a circle and line design on the floor resembling those on Silver's gloves. There are also glowing cyan circles resembling PK marks indoors. In Sonic Frontiers, the Ancients' technology often glows cyan as well. The sphere used in M-080 has marks resembling those on the Lightron. Some devices even seem to use a version of psychokinesis in order to be interacted with. It is unknown if this is meant to imply a connection between Silver and ancient technology, or is merely a coincidence.
- Concept art for Silver shows that Silver's cuffs are supposed to open and close when activating his psychokinesis. However, in the final release of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), the cuffs always remain open in gameplay, despite his model having a rig to open them. The cuffs only open and close in cutscenes, such as when Silver and Amy find Sonic in Castle Town. Later appearances would opt to leave his cuffs open at all times.
- According to Sonic the Hedgehog: The Official Cookbook, Silver enjoys chili dogs just like Sonic. Unlike Sonic, however, he prefers his chili dogs with crisp slaw instead of gooey cheese. Additionally, the name of the dish "Rival Chili Dog" may be a reference to Silver's status as Sonic's rival as he was portrayed in the Sonic Rivals series and Sonic Generations.
