Doctor Eggman's super secret weapon. A formidable enemy?

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit)[1]

Mecha Sonic[2] (メカソニック[1] Meka Sonikku?), also known as Silver Sonic,[3][4] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced Master Robot model based on Sonic the Hedgehog and built by Dr. Eggman.

Appearance[]

Mecha Sonic is a robotic doppelganger of Sonic that possesses a rather low-tech looking appearance. Mecha Sonic was smaller in comparison to the Mecha Sonic from the West Side Island incident, yet was slightly taller than Sonic himself. It had metallic gray armor with a yellow color scheme on its center body and mouth plate. Attached with a light blue visor with a red lens and light blue metal sneakers with rocket motors, Mecha Sonic's primary weapons included a large claw hand protruding from its torso and blue rocket engines on both sides of its body where its arms would be.

The appearance of the mass-produced Silver Sonic is similar to the original model. However, they are smaller (about the same size as Tails). Also, instead of having an extendable arm concealed in its chest, it has two extendable claw arms on its sides as opposed to rocket engines.

History[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit)[]

Mecha Sonic debuts with its weakest, weirdest form. It has a Spin Dash and a lashing tentacle arm. It holds the final Chaos Emerald but only gives it up if you have the other five.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit), Mecha Sonic was created by Dr. Eggman, then called "Robotnik", as one of his five Master Robots sent to eliminate Sonic, while the villain held the hedgehog's friend, Tails, prisoner.[5] At some point, it came into possession of a Chaos Emerald.

Mecha Sonic eventually encountered Sonic in Scrambled Egg Zone. After a hard-fought battle between the hedgehog and his robot duplicate, the machine was destroyed. From Mecha Sonic's remains, Sonic also claimed the final Chaos Emerald he needed to save Tails.

Sonic Mania[]

In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, mass-produced Mecha Sonics, now known as Silver Sonic[4], appear as Badniks that aid Metal Sonic during the main boss fight in Stardust Speedway Zone Act 2. During the first phase of this fight, Metal Sonic will jack himself into a large machine resembling Eggman which will dispense a Silver Sonic. Unlike its original encounter, this Silver Sonic can be destroyed with one hit and will release a captured Animal upon defeat. If the Silver Sonic is defeated however, Metal Sonic will simply dispense another to take its place.

Ssonicanimated

During battle, the Silver Sonic can utilize three different attacks: it will either attack the playable character with a Spin Dash, perform a melee attack with its claws by swiping it at the playable characters, or dash forward using its jet boots until it hits the screen's edge. When revving up or performing the Spin Dash though, the player can bounce into Silver Sonic with a Spin Attack, Spin Jump, or Spin Dash, causing it to ricochet off the walls and damage Metal Sonic if they come into contact.

In the version 1.04 patch for Sonic Mania released along with Sonic Mania Plus, Silver Sonic, when destroyed, will release four energy orbs in an "X" shape pattern that can also be used to damage Metal Sonic.

Powers and abilities[]

Mecha Sonic can roll and spin just like the real Sonic with the inclusion of being able to perform the Spin Attack and its additional variants, like the Spin Jump and Spin Dash. These attacks are strong enough to cancel out the same techniques utilized by Sonic. The rockets on its body allow it to fly and dash at high speed. It can also attack with retractable claws.

Battle[]

Mecha Sonic is the sixth and penultimate boss in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit) (depending on the player's progress in the game). It is fought with Sonic at the end of Scrambled Egg Zone Act 3 in the wide cave area without any Rings after being sent out of the high-speed warp tube.

Boss guide[]

As the fight begins, Mecha Sonic has three basic attack patterns used randomly. As standing either on the left or right side of the area, if the player attempts to approach it from above or ahead, the robotic clone curls into its ball mode, while charging at one place. It will then either spin through the area and jump backwards to the same corner where it was previously, or simply use the Spin Jump to reach the other side of the area. During its curling ball mode, the player's Spin Jump does not provide any damage to it and both Mecha Sonic and Sonic would get knocked back, if either one of them or both are using the Spin Jump in mid-air. Using the Spin Jump while Mecha Sonic is charging its curling ball mode, does also not provide any hits.

Two other attack patterns can damage the player, if Sonic is not using his Spin Jump or Spin Attack. Mecha Sonic will either rise above the ground and quickly charge to the other side of the area. If the player is close to Mecha Sonic, it can activate its small claw hand as an attempt to damage the player in front of it.

The player can simply provide hits by attacking right above, when Mecha Sonic shifts off its curling ball mode. When Mecha Sonic is charging, the player can avoid the attack while also being able to hit it above. After doing eight hits, Mecha Sonic is defeated.

If the player has gotten five of the Chaos Emeralds upon defeating the Mecha Sonic, it will drop the sixth and final Chaos Emerald, which will grant Sonic access to Crystal Egg Zone. Otherwise, the game ends here.
