Not to be confused with Mecha Sonic (Death Egg Zone). For other uses of the term, see Silver Sonic (disambiguation).

Silver Sonic[1] (メカソニック[2] Meka Sonikku?, lit. "Mecha Sonic") is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Developed as a Master Robot, Silver Sonic was one of Dr. Eggman's first robotic versions of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Appearance

Silver Sonic is an robotic doppelganger of Sonic that possesses an rather low-tech looking appearance. The first Silver Sonic was smaller in comparison to Mecha Sonic, yet slightly taller than Sonic himself. It had metallic grey armor with a yellow color scheme on its center body and mouth plate. Attached with a light blue visor with a red lens and light blue metal sneakers with rocket motors, Silver Sonic's primary weapons included a large claw hand protruding from its torso and blue rocket engines on both sides of its body.

History

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit)

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit), Silver Sonic was created by Dr. Robotnik as one of his five Master Robots send to eliminate Sonic, while Robotnik held Sonic's friend, Tails, prisoner.[3] At some point, it came into possession of a Chaos Emerald.

Silver Sonic eventually encountered Sonic in Scrambled Egg Zone. After a hard-fought battle between the hedgehog and his robot duplicate, Silver Sonic was destroyed. From Silver Sonic's remains, Sonic also claimed the final Chaos Emerald he needed to save Tails.

Powers and abilities

Silver Sonic can roll and spin just like the real Sonic with inclusion of being able to perform Spin Attack and its additional variants like the Spin Jump and Spin Dash. These attacks are strong enough to cancel out the same techniques utilized by Sonic. The rockets on its body also allow it to fly and dash at high speed. Silver Sonic can also attack with retractable claws.

Battle

Silver Sonic is the sixth and penultimate boss in the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (depending on the player's progress in the game). It is fought with Sonic at the end of Scrambled Egg Zone Act 3 in the wide cave area without any Rings after being sent out of the High-speed warp tube.

Boss guide

As the fight begins, Silver Sonic has three basic attack patterns used randomly. As standing either on the left or right side of the area, if the player attempts to approach it from above or ahead, the robotic clone curls into its ball mode, while charging at one place. It will then either spin through the area and jump backwards to the same corner where it was previously, or simply use the Spin Jump to reach the other side of the area. During its curling ball mode, the player's Spin Jump does not provide any damage to it and both Silver Sonic and Sonic would get knocked back, if either one of them or both are using Spin Jump in mid-air. Using the Spin Jump while Silver Sonic is charging its curling ball mode, does also not provide any hits.

Two other attack patterns can damage the player, if Sonic is not using his Spin Jump or Spin Attack. Silver Sonic will either rise above the ground and quickly charge to the other side of the area. If the player is close to Silver Sonic, it can activate its small claw hand as an attempt to damage the player in front of it.

The player can simply provide hits by attacking right above, when Silver Sonic shifts off its curling ball mode. When Silver Sonic is charging, the player can avoid the attack while also being able to hit it above. After doing eight hits, Silver Sonic is defeated.

If the player has gotten five of the Chaos Emeralds upon defeating the Silver Sonic, it will drop the sixth and final Chaos Emerald, which will grant Sonic access to Crystal Egg Zone. Otherwise, the game ends here.

Silver Sonic, from Sonic the Hedgehog #269.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Silver Sonic was the prototype version of the present day model. Years ago, it ambushed Sonic and Breezie in the Scrambled Egg Zone as Sonic was heading out to save Tails. However, Sonic managed to overcome Silver Sonic and Breezie's betrayal, and completed his mission.[4]

Trivia

  • The Silver Sonic is the first Sonic robot replica in the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
  • It shares its Japanese name, Mecha Sonic, with the the Death Egg Zone boss in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the Sky Sanctuary Zone boss in Sonic & Knuckles.
  • Sonic will not take damage as long as he is curled up into a ball.
  • Silver Sonic is shown to have arms in its reappearance in Sonic Mania more akin to its appearance in the comics. In its original in-game appearance and instruction manual artwork, it had no arms, only a retractable claw in its torso.
