Silver's future is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a time period set approximately 200 years into the future of Sonic's universe. Currently, the only known inhabitants of this future are Silver the Hedgehog and formerly Eggman Nega.
Description[]
Silver's future is two hundred years into the future of Sonic's universe; so far, the only planet seen is the future Earth. Originally, this future saw the Earth as an apocalyptic wasteland scorched by Iblis. Due to the infernal flames brought by Iblis, the sky was permanently black or red with smoke, letting little sunlight reach the surface. Almost all of the planet was in ruins and ravaged by fire, and previously prosperous cities were devastated, with no signs of life and the unfortunate inhabitants having lost all hope for the situation to improve.[2]
After the future was permanently saved from Iblis at the end of the Solaris incident, the future was changed into a default "blue skies future",[3] where the world is at peace.[4] Certain locations from the present, such as Angel Island (renamed Onyx Island), still exist in the future with different names. The technology in this time is advanced enough to create impressive devices such as cameras that traps objects in cards.[5] During the Wisp incident, Silver said the people of the future were happy and the sky was always blue.[6] He implied there are robots, and that he has fought them.[7] During the CrossWorld Grand Prix, Silver stated that the Eggman Empire does not exist in his future, with its founder nothing more than a bad memory,[8][9] but also mentioned that the Zeti are still a threat.[10] After the Metal Virus arc, a brief glimpse of this future is seen, showing a high-tech city surrounded by plant life. Sonic Channel artwork has shown Silver in a similar city full of white technology with blue lights, holograms, and flying cars.
At times, the future is again ruined by a change in the past, prompting Silver to travel back in time to save it. When something in the present can be changed to improve the future, a mysterious portal may open for Silver to travel back in time.[11] During Sonic Rivals 2, the future was ravaged by fire once again as Eggman Nega unleashed the Ifrit in the present. Silver compared the future he had seen to the Ifrit's home, the Chaotic Inferno.[12] During the War to Take Back the Planet, Silver again claimed the future world was in ruins, but that there were no records so he couldn't tell what had gone wrong.[13] In the Metal Virus arc, Silver found the future was a wasteland with no people or animals, only ruins and metallic plants.
History[]
Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)[]
Mephiles showing Silver and Blaze the Day of Disaster, in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Iblis devastated the planet for two centuries after the Day of Disaster, when he was released by Princess Elise's death in the Egg Carrier's crash.[14] Silver was born in this apocalyptic future and fought Iblis for roughly half his life, stating that no one remembered where Iblis came from, leaving Silver as the only person with enough hope to keep fighting.[2][15] He met Blaze at some point, but they were still unable to get rid of Iblis. Eventually, Mephiles traveled to this future and deceived Silver into letting him send them back in time, lying that Sonic was the "Iblis Trigger" and that killing him would prevent Iblis from ever appearing.
The Flame Core, a location from the future in the Solaris incident.
Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles were banished into this future by Dr. Eggman's Solaris prototype, while Mephiles sent Shadow and Rouge there as well, only for both groups to return to the present via Dual Chaos Control. The latter group also discovered a disabled Omega, and learned that the humans of the future had come to fear Shadow and reprogrammed Omega to capture him.
After the Egg Carrier's crash, Silver helped Sonic travel a day into the past so he could rescue Elise. He then returned to the future; although confident Elise was saved, Silver knew the future was still in ruins and he needed to stop Iblis. There, Silver resolved to seal Iblis inside himself, though Blaze took his place in the ritual. With Iblis gone, the world was saved and could begin to heal, its blue skies returning. This was overwritten when Solaris was formed in the past, followed by his defeat and erasure by Elise, which stopped Iblis from ever being created and ruining the future at all. Silver still remembers his upbringing in the Iblis-torn future; however, he does not remember how it was fixed, including his time with Blaze or Sonic.[11]
Sonic Rivals series[]
Sonic Rivals[]
Forest Falls on Onyx Island, from Sonic Rivals.
In Sonic Rivals, Eggman Nega traveled back in time from the future wielding a camera that could trap objects inside of cards. His plan was to dispose of his ancestor, Dr. Eggman, to undo the doctor's failures and salvage his family's legacy in the future. However, Silver followed him to the present to stop him. Eggman Nega brought with him Onyx Island, a version of Angel Island from the future, by trapping the Master Emerald in a card.[16]
When Nega was thwarted, he tried turning the entire planet into a card, which would destroy the future he hailed from. Fortunately, he was stopped by Silver and trapped in a card himself, which Silver took back to the future. Once the Master Emerald was freed, Onyx Island returned to the future as well.
Sonic Rivals 2[]
In Sonic Rivals 2, the world of the future was devastated by the Ifrit, which had been released from the Chaotic Inferno into Sonic's world by Eggman Nega. This prompted Silver to travel back in time to change the future, hiding the Chao that the Ifrit would consume to become invincible. Silver then defeated the Ifrit, and both Eggman Nega and the Ifrit were stranded in the fiery dimension, keeping Silver's future safe.
Sonic Colors[]
|
In the Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colors, the future is mentioned by Silver in Sweet Mountain. A sign read that Egg Planet Park was as advanced as the future, but Silver disagreed and stated that the future was in fact much happier.
Sonic Generations[]
- Main articles: Crisis City (Sonic Generations) and Silver the Hedgehog (Sonic Generations).
Modern Sonic in the lost future from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), from the console/PC version of Sonic Generations.
In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, the Time Eater damaged the time stream and created White Space, which stirred up echoes of past temporal alterations,[17] including the Iblis-torn future. This lost future, specifically Crisis City, was the seventh area both visited by the Sonics in White Space. By speeding through the ruined city, the hedgehogs were able to fix space, thereby restoring the location, and by extension Blaze, from their lifeless states. At a later point, Modern Sonic was challenged to a fight by a skeptical Silver in the infernal metropolis, defeating the white hedgehog and claiming his Chaos Emerald in the process. When the Time Eater was defeated, the timeline was seemingly returned to normal, and Silver's devastated future was lost to time once more.
Team Sonic Racing[]
In Team Sonic Racing, Silver was in the future when he received a message sent across time by Dodon Pa, inviting him to a racing tournament in Sonic's time. Accepting the offer, the white hedgehog traveled back in time to participate.
Sonic Forces[]
In Sonic Forces, after the Phantom Ruby was transported into the present of Earth, the future became ruined again. However, because everything about this disaster was either expunged or illegible, Silver had little information when he returned to the present to change history.[13] Presumably, the future was saved after Silver helped the Resistance win the War to Take Back the Planet, specifically by fighting Infinite, which allowed the Avatar to obtain a Phantom Ruby prototype and turn the tide of the war.

Books and comics[]
Archie Comics[]
Silver overlooks the ruins of a city in 3437 P.X.E., from Sonic the Hedgehog #215.
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Silver's future was occurred two-hundred years into the future in the year "3437 P.X.E.", this time in Mobius Prime's timeline. Due to the treachery of one of the legendary Knothole Freedom Fighters, they were all destroyed and Silver's future was doomed without them. After several failed visits to the past to prevent this devastation from happening, Silver discovered his era's ruin was due to Mecha Sally's actions, but when he set out to stop her, the Multiverse was forever changed by the Genesis Wave.
After the Super Genesis Wave re-wrote history, Silver's future became virtually indistinguishable from the games. In addition to the white hedgehog himself, individuals like Professor Von Schlemmer and Gold the Tenrec inhabit this era as well.
IDW Publishing[]
The Fate of Dr. Eggman[]
Silver's bad future, from Sonic the Hedgehog #8.
A previous version of Silver's future saw the world conquered by the Eggman Empire. In this timeline, everyone was living in fear and choking on polluted air. This was changed after Silver the Hedgehog went to the past to aid the Resistance in combating the Eggman Empire. When Silver later returned to his time however, he found his world in another dire situation; while the Eggman Empire had vanished, the world had become barren of any organic life and machinery, with only water and sparse, metallic plant life remaining. This prompted Silver to return to the past once again to solve this crisis.[18]
All or Nothing[]
Sometime after Dr. Eggman had his memories restored, he created a mechanical substance called the Metal Virus that infected several people around the world, turning them into Zombots. His research showed that the virus would eventually become unsustainable and would cause the Zombots to disintegrate; the doctor predicted that this would occur two hundred years, something that Silver deduced had already happened in his time since all that remains were metallic plants and ruins.[19]
Out of the Blue[]
After Silver helped stop the Metal Virus crisis in Sonic's time, he returned to his own and found that it had been restored to a peaceful and lush state.[20]
Trivia[]
- According to the English website for Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), it is the norm in Silver's future for people to possess psychic powers, and the people of this time are described as regularly moving objects using psychokinesis. However, the site contains major inaccuracies regarding Silver's backstory, so this is likely non-canon.[21]
- In 2020, Ian Flynn stated that from his understanding of notes from Sega, Silver's future works similarly to Future Trunks' timeline from Dragon Ball Z, in that it was locked in the saved "blue skies" state after being freed of Iblis.[3] He acknowledges that this is inconsistent, as Silver's future is still changed whenever he or something else changes the present, as evidenced by Sonic Forces and Sonic Forces: Stress Test, which is not how Future Trunks' timeline works.
- Evan Stanley has stated that the IDW comics are not allowed to explore Silver's future.[22]
- According to Silver in Sonic the Hedgehog: The Official Cookbook, the recipe for Egg Tarts is the exact same in the future as it is Sonic's time period.
- On a similar note, Silver notes during his 'A Rival's Chili Dog' recipe that the food in the future is as good as that in Sonic's time.
- Despite the fact the Sonic Rivals series, where the concept of Eggman Nega being from the future was first publicly stated, was never released in Japan, Sonic Channel's description of Nega describes him as a descendant of Doctor Eggman from a distant future but how far into the future is unknown.
- When asked about the origins of Silver, Blaze and Eggman Nega, Takashi Iizuka stated that Silver and Eggman Nega are from the future while Blaze is from an alternate dimension.[23] Implying that Silver and Eggman Nega are from the same future.
- Two Sonic PICT artworks set in Silver's future - September 2022 and August 2025 - appear to be parallels of one another; implying one to be the bad future version and the other the good future outcome. Clues include:
- The exact same Big the Cat magazine is found in both PICT images.
- In the background of the 2025 good future version, apple snack bars are found, in commentary of the 2022 PICT, the snack bar Silver is eating is stated to be apple-flavoured.[24]
- In both PICT images, Silver is placed in front of a large window.
