The Side Story is a feature in Sonic Frontiers meant to facilitate optional story content and context. Side stories can be accessed through various means, generally from collecting items in game such as memory tokens.

Overview[]

Most side stories detail a conversation between two character, typically between Sonic and the secondary protagonist to that island, with Sage also having her own separate side stories available. Conversations can consist of characters discussing a multitude of things such as observing their environment/circumstance, theorizing the mysteries of the Starfall Islands, or reminiscing on their pasts.

In the Final Horizon, side stories appear substantially less and usually consist of characters talking about their life or mental states. Since the Final Horizon consists of all six main characters present at once, the typical pattern of Sonic talking to the set islands main protagonist is not present and instead, interactions are more varied between characters.

Due to the differences in the script between the English and Japanese versions of Sonic Frontiers, the content of the Side Stories can differ between English and Japanese.

English Description Japanese Description Initiating character
Amy points out she had seen a similar tower on Kronos Island. Sage explains that they were radio towers and that similar ones existed on Rhea Island, and that they detected signals on when their enemy was near, and that the one on Ouranos Island was already activated. Amy Rose
Amy makes sure to remind Sage that they must work together. Sage points out Amy's admiration of Sonic, to which Amy asks if Sage was a fellow admirer. Sage quickly changes the topic to finding the Chaos Emeralds. Amy Rose
Amy asks Sage about the small stacked stone towers dotted around the Starfall Islands, wondering if they had any deeper meaning. Sage explains that they were actually the result of a popular pass time for the Ancients, a small glimpse into their everyday lives. Amy worries about any she might have knocked over, but Sage tells her that the Ancients enjoyed knocking them over to rebuild them. Amy Rose
Amy asks Sage about the mark she had seen around the Islands and in the sky when the Koco passed on. Sage explains that it is likely the symbol of the Ancients' god, which Amy expresses surprise at. Due to the appearance of it in the sky, Sage believes that their god may still be out there. Amy Rose
Sage and Amy ponder why the Koco may be helpful to them, before coming to the realization that the souls stored inside of them by the Ancients may contain information that had not been uploaded to Cyber Space. Amy Rose
Knuckles ponders the purpose of the underground passages on Ares Island. Sage explains that they were passages to the Ancients' spaceships from tens of thousands of years ago, submerged deep underwater, but still active. Knuckles expresses surprise that someone so old could still be active, and Sage says that they were using the ships to power their new civilization, but that many of the passages were now disconnected from them. Knuckles the Echidna
Sage tells Knuckles not to waste time on the enemies, but Knuckles asks her why they appear to come back even after being beaten. She explains that they were defensive weapons created by the Ancients to protect the Starfall Islands, and that they are powered by the Chaos Emeralds and are designed to rebuild themselves by reacting to the gravitational pull of meteors so that they can fulfill their purpose long after the Ancients had been gone. She notes that they were inactive when she and Dr. Eggman arrived on the Islands, but she reactivated them when she connected to Cyber Space. Knuckles the Echidna
Sage brings up that Knuckles' power to detect the Chaos Emeralds may be the key. He boasts that if anything gets in the way of him and the Chaos Emeralds, he'll smash it with his fists. Sage asks him not to smash the Emeralds in the process. Knuckles the Echidna
Knuckles angrily asks Sage where the shockwave came from, and she tells him that it is somewhere beyond the reach of his fists. Knuckles calls it a coward, but Sage warns him that when it does appear, their time will be up, so they need to find the Chaos Emeralds. Knuckles the Echidna
Tails tells Sage that he had previously detected similar readings from ruins, pondering if something was in the air. Sage explains that it's actually sending and receiving information to a satellite that the Ancients placed in space. Tails questions their function, and Sage theorizes that they were used to send authentication codes, pointing out that the massive columns of light from the Chaos Emerald Vaults are actually large masses of data. Tails then realizes that they were actually receiving code to to open the Vault. Miles "Tails" Prower
Sage ponders what if Dr. Eggman and Tails were to team up, and Tails tells her that he would, but was unsure if the Doctor would be willing to. Sage is surprised at his answer, and Tails tells her that, even though he couldn't answer that question on Chaos Island, he was finally ready to do so now. Miles "Tails" Prower
Tails expresses surprises at the Death Egg Robot on Chaos Island being able to blast through the ground, before asking why it was the only one of many that they'd seen on the Islands be able to do that. Sage explains that that specific one was the one that they had arrived on the Starfall Islands with, but after the Doctor was trapped in Cyber Space, it was too damaged by the volcano to be moved. Tails accepts this, and mentions that they would not have been able to find one of the Chaos Emeralds on Chaos Island without it. Sage admits she was surprised that Sonic was able to hack into the robot, and mentions that they should repair it and add it to their troops, if time permitted. Miles "Tails" Prower
Sage mentions to Tails that his Cyber corruption is only getting worse, and that his time was limited. Tails admits that he knows he may end up being unable to move, but he has to power through it to collect the Chaos Emeralds and bring them to Sonic. Sage updated his information, and mentions a new possibility growing within him. Miles "Tails" Prower
Sage mentions that Amy, Knuckles, and Tails have been making progress on collecting the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic is pleased, but not surprised, and Sage reminds him that there's no time to waste and that he must continue climbing the towers. Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic ponders why all of the Titans looked so different, and Sage explains that there were five tribes that lived on the Ancients' planet, ones with big and powerful bodies, ones with a tail instead of legs, ones with four legs, ones with wings, and ones who were the most intelligent of them all. She explains that, though they all stop together against The End, only a portion of the most intelligent tribe were able to escape. The Titans were made in their fallen brethren's image, and represented their determination to avenge their fallen comrades. Sonic the Hedgehog
Sage points out the next tower is the final one, and asks Sonic to have his speed and courage transcend fate. Sonic is amused at her cheering him on, and she tells him that the Islands are full of unknown possibilities that throw her calculations off. Sonic says that if it's not impossible, it's good enough for him, and Sage asks him to use that potential to protect the Doctor. Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic asks Sage about the pyramid structure on Kronos Island, noting the similarities to it and the pyramid on Ouranos Island. She informs him that they were docking points for their ships, and that the web-like structures were once harbors for their ships, lamenting that it is not just an architectural curiosity. Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic mentions going fishing in the Purple Portals with Big, confused as to how he wound up on the Starfall Islands. Sage informs him that the Purple Portals are simply a type of Cyber Space, and that the Big he saw was simply a construction of Cyber Space. She mentions how traversing through Cyber Space usually makes one feel intensely in danger, and that the fact that he was able to speak with Big as if he was real was a testament on how vivid a memory that Sonic had of Big. Sonic points out that he didn't feel like he was in any danger around Big, but was relieved to know that the real Big was safe. Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic asks Sage if she's like to join him on a nearby Grind Rail, but she tells him that she cannot see anything there. Sonic is confused, and Sage explains that, because he's so deeply connected with Cyber Space, objects based on his memories and experiences are manifesting into the real world. Sonic the Hedgehog

Tails believes so, since how much they can interact with the real world is limited while digitized, but tells her that there must be some other way it could help them, like how they restored Sonic on Rhea Island. Amy agrees, believing there has to be something that they can only do in that state. Miles "Tails" Prower
Amy asks Tails if he's noticed that their Cyber corruption had been getting worse. Tails says that he has, and Amy says that they might get trapped between dimensions, and that she fears letting Sonic down. Tails agrees, saying that he can't fail, no matter what happens to his body. Miles "Tails" Prower
Amy teasingly tells Sonic that she's no longer a damsel in distress anymore, and that one day Sonic would be relying on her instead. Sonic points out that he feels like he's relying on her plenty already, joking that she'll be too cool for school. Amy teases him by telling him not to blink. Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic tells Amy that she needs to take care of herself, as well as the Koco. Sonic says that the ruins reminds him of Angel Island. Knuckles is confused by the notion, as there are multiple architectural styles across the island, and they seem to pre-date anything on Angel Island. However, the spiritual and military styles are similar. Sonic infers that while the Ancients and Echidnas may not be related, one may have shared inspiration. 124

He replies that he's find, though the shockwave took a lot out of him. Tails theorizes that their time might be almost up, and Amy says that they need to focus on getting the Chaos Emeralds and keeping the Koco safe. Amy Rose
Tails mentions that the Chaos Emeralds have moved, and Knuckles tells him that sitting around won't do them any good. Tails theorizes that if the way that they were stored was changed, then maybe how they needed to be released has changed as well, thinking that the key would be found in a terminal with access to Cyber Space. Knuckles the Echidna
Tails mentions that he was looking for any kind of weapon that they could while searching, but was unable to find anything. Knuckles mentions that there was a cannon on Ares Island, but it had been fired to drain an oasis, and that finding another shell would take too much time. Tails questions why the Ancients would waste water in the desert, and theorized that the oasis was actually a dam with an adjustable faucet. Knuckles mentions all the water went down the drain, and Tails said it should have been tried into various watering holes, then lamented on how he wished there was something like that on Ouranos Island. Sonic takes a moment to check in with Knuckles, who says he didn't expect Sonic to waste time like that. Sonic tells Knuckles that he was worried Knuckles might not be able to find all the Chaos Emeralds, to which Knuckles says he really is wasting time, worrying about him like that. Knuckles the Echidna
Knuckles tells Sonic that they've found three Chaos Emeralds so far. Sonic jokes that he's been making better progress than them, and Knuckles angrily tells him that the enemy's has been getting more persistent, like with the shockwave. Tails simply tells him that the engineer might have been feeling playful while designing it. Miles "Tails" Prower

Doctor Eggman[]

The Final Horizon[]

English Description Japanese Description Initiating character
Amy asks Dr. Eggman about the floating upside-down pyramid on Kronos Island. He explains that it was a terminal created by the Ancients when they first arrived to the Starfall Islands, to make sure that they were habitable. He says that there were terminals on the other Islands as well, but they've all since ceased to function. He tells Amy that if she's curious, she can find them herself once they sort out the situation there first. Amy Rose
Dr. Eggman asks what Amy wants from him, telling her that Sonic isn't there. Amy tells him he better not be "up to no good" while Sonic was busy, and the Doctor asks her if she mistakes him for a small-time crook instead of an evil genius. Amy snidely asks what should she mistake him for, then. Amy Rose
Amy mentions that she hadn't she any animals during her time on the Starfall Islands, and wonders if it was Dr. Eggman's doing. He tells her that he had no involvement in that, and that the Ancients transported all of the animals to another island during the final battle against The End, and since no one was able to return them, the Islands' ecosystem suffered a major disruption. The Doctor points out that the Ancients must have been fully committed to the battle to do such a large-scale transportation. Amy Rose
Amy mentions that she would often see lights around tree trunks during the evening while she on Kronos Island. Dr. Eggman explains that they're called Phantom Lights, which are faint thoughts of the Ancients seeping out of Cyber Space. Amy compares them to the Koco, but is still confused as to why they only come out at night. The Doctor tells her that it's the only time the Phantom Lights feel safe enough to come out, and expresses concern at their fear of being destroyed, even though they've already lost their bodies. Amy Rose
Dr. Eggman explains that the shockwave created a large amount of electrical noise, full of deconstructed and reconstructed meaningless data. He notes that it would be especially effective against those without corporeal forms. Amy questions why he sounded so excited, but the Doctor simply explains that the very act of analyzing and explaining what he sees comes as natural as breathing to him. Amy just wants to make sure he keeps cooperating until they finish what they need to do. Amy Rose
Dr. Eggman tells Knuckles to stop wasting time talking to him and to use his fists to get some work done. Knuckles tells him to stop ordering him around, or he'll use his fists on him instead. The Doctor snidely comments on his retort, and reminds him that time is of the essence, and to go use his brute force to find the Chaos Emeralds. Knuckles the Echidna
Knuckles points out the floating ruins on Ouranos Island, and mentions the four giant floating rings on Ares Island. Dr. Eggman explains that they're actually a facility to monitor the connection between the Starfall Islands and Cyber Space, and that the four rings represent the four Islands. He mentions that when they're rotating, they indicate that a link between them is open, and when it stops, there's an abnormality in Cyber Space. He believes that the size is also meaningful, and ponders what other functions they may have. Knuckles the Echidna
Dr. Eggman mentions that he'll use some of the technology he's gathered on the Starfall Islands to try and steal the Master Emerald again. Knuckles overhears this, and tells him that he'll never let the Doctor lay a finger on the Master Emerald, as it's his duty to protect it as the last Echidna. Knuckles the Echidna
Dr. Eggman asks Tails if he's feeling anxious without Sonic around, but Tails reminds him about what he did at Station Square to Eggman before, claiming that there were only things that he could do. The Doctor challenges him to see what he's capable of. Miles "Tails" Prower
Tails mentions that there's so much going on the Islands that were beyond his comprehension, and that they seemed like magic to him. Dr. Eggman gives him some advice, telling him that, as a scientist, he shouldn't use the word "magic". The Doctor tells him that, even though it's beyond their current comprehension, the Ancients' highly advanced technology was common for their society at the time, and that everything they've encountered can be explained, assuring him that there is no magic on the Islands. He then expresses his desire to be the one to uncover the truth abut it. Miles "Tails" Prower
Tails asks Eggman if some of the giant devices he saw on Chaos Island were Dr. Eggman's technology, pointing out their color scheme and newness. The Doctor praises his keen, and explains that they were geothermal power sources for the technology he brought to the Island. He laments how he was unable to create more power sources to create a super weapon. Tails ponders that the energy supply contributed to how him and Sonic were able to find one of the Chaos Emeralds, but Tails didn't want to thank the Doctor for it. Miles "Tails" Prower
Dr. Eggman talks about how the path to victory lies within the technology of the Ancients. He begins thinking about combining them with the Chaos Emeralds, but stops after noticing that Tails didn't look well.
