Siberia is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series produced by Paramount Pictures and its spin-offs. It is an extensive geographical region located on Earth.

Description[]

Siberia is a frozen and vast land covered in snow. Much of the landscape here consists of tundra and mountainous regions. Weather patterns here include intense blizzards, and snow-based avalanches pose a threat on the mountain slopes. Also, while sparsely populated, a few human settlements can be found here, such as shelters and bars.

Notably, in eastern Siberia, there is an ancient owl temple hidden inside a cave in a mountain range. This temple is meant to house a compass that will lead to the hiding place of the Master Emerald. Inside the temple are murals and inscriptions describing the history of the Master Emerald and the war with between the owls and the echidnas. In the center of the temple there is also a huge owl statue with slots on it that can be activated by arranging the characters on the aforementioned slots in the right order. Once activated, the statue will spread its wings out and scan its users with a green light, before transferring the compass from itself over to the user.

History[]

Film series[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 2[]

In order to find the compass that could lead them to the Master Emerald, Sonic and Tails traveled to eastern Siberia using a Ring. However, they soon found themselves lost in a blizzard and in need of shelter. As such, they put on some disguises and entered a nearby bar, where they tried ordering food. However, due to the translator on Tails' Miles Electric glitching, Tails' attempts to communicating with the waitress invoked the anger of the patrons, who tried having him and Sonic thrown into the fireplace after them they unmasked them. Fortunately, Tails managed to negotiate a dance-off with one of the patrons in order to settle their dispute. Despite some trouble, Sonic and Tails ultimately won the dance-off.

The next day, Sonic and Tails located the owl temple in some mountains. Inside it, they learned of the history behind the Master Emerald and the feud between the owls and echidnas from some inscriptions. Afterwards, Sonic used a map he had gotten from Longclaw to solve the slot puzzle on the temple's owl statue, which made it hand the compass over to them. Immediately after however, they got cornered by Badniks, Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles. As Robotnik fired his Egg Mobile's missile at Sonic, Sonic would redirect it into the owl statue, thus making the temple cave in and providing Sonic and Tails with a way out of the temple. Sonic then obtained a makeshift snowboard from a Badnik he destroyed and began sliding down the mountainside while Tails followed him from above.

While escaping from the Badniks, Sonic managed to destroy them along the way. However, Knuckles, who would pursue Sonic by snowboarding on a Badnik part too, caught up with him and drove him to the edge of a cliff. There, the both of them confronted each other over their motivations for trying to stop the other. After Tails then failed to bind Knuckles with a gadget of his, Sonic tied passing the compass over to Tails, only for Robotnik to swoop in and snatch it before shooting Tails down with missiles. With Tails out cold, Robotnik and Knuckles left in the Egg Mobile as an avalanche appeared. Taking Tails with him, Sonic would call Tom to ask for help as he tried to escape the avalanche on his makeshift snowboard. Tom, who was in Hawaii, subsequently opened a Ring portal for Sonic to head through with Tails, saving them both.

Trivia[]

  • Siberia is based on the real-life region of the same name.
  • According to Patrick Casey on The GHZ Podcast, the sequence set in Siberia was originally planned to take place on a planet based on IceCap, and would have featured an undisclosed character from the games in the bar, with the skeleton of a giant cat making an appearance out in the snow. The location was changed to Siberia in the final film as it wasn't feasible to create and animate the many CGI characters needed to populate the bar.[1] The snowboarding scene is a remnant of this concept, based on the snowboarding segments from IceCap Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Icecap in Sonic Adventure.
