The Shovel Claws (シャベル クラウ Shaberu Kurau?) are a Level Up Item for Knuckles the Echidna. They first appeared in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, and later returned in the sequels Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.

Description

The Shovel Claws are a pair of hooked metal plates with spiked claws that can be attached over the tops of Knuckles' gloves. They are specifically made to enhance Knuckles' digging abilities, allowing him to use Dig. Rouge the Bat's equivalent are Pick Nails.

Locations

Sonic Adventure

Knuckles can dig up buried items with these attached to his gloves.

Sonic Adventure manual description

In Sonic Adventure, the Shovel Claws are located in the Mystic Ruins' Adventure Field. They are found in a small cave behind Tails' workshop, inside one of the smaller cavers with a Kiki Badnik, close to the Mine Cart that takes players to the Mystic Ruins' Chao Garden. After getting trapped inside the room with the Shovel Claws by a cage door activated by a Kiki, Knuckles has to use the Shovel Claws to find a hidden contact to break free. It is a later requirement to find the Master Emerald shards in certain levels.

Sonic Adventure 2

Enables Knuckles to dig into the grounds and walls.

Sonic Adventure 2 manual description

In Sonic Adventure 2, Knuckles finds them in Pumpkin Hill, on a platform just in front of the starting point of the level. They are the only mandatory Level Up Item for Knuckles here, as at least one of the Emerald Shards in the level will be hidden underground, requiring the Level Up Item to get to it.

Knuckles finds the Shovel Claws in Sonic X.

The Shovel Claws appeared several times in Sonic X. In this media they originate from Knuckles the Echidna's home world, until they were transported to Earth. Knuckles mainly uses them to dig and in rare cases, as an offensive weapon.

They first appeared in "The Adventures of Knuckles and Hawk" where they had come into the possession of Hawk, a human friend of Knuckles, who had found them inside an old temple on the southern part of a continent. Knuckles eventually took possession of them after he found them inside Hawk's house and used them to dig up a buried Chaos Emerald.

The Shovel Claws later reappeared when Knuckles and Sonic were fighting Chaos 6 and Knuckles used them to bare Chaos' brain for Sonic's attack. He later used them to attack Team Chaotix when they drew pictures on him.
