The Shield is a recurring power-up in the Sonic Boom video games. A defensive power-up, it envelopes the playable character in a spherical barrier which protects the wearer from taking damage once.

Description

The Shield has the ability to negate damage taken from enemies and different kinds of damage-inflicting level hazards. After receiving a damaging blow, the Shield disappears and the player usually flies slightly backwards without taking damage, meaning the player will not lose Rings or be defeated if they are hit without Rings. Shields will not protect the player from falling into bottomless pits or getting crushed however.

The Shield can in most cases be obtained by breaking/touching item boxes displaying the Shield's icon in the respective games. Once obtained, the Shield will usually surround the player character until it is broken or the level is completed.

The Shield's color has varied between games without explanation: Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal depicted it as translucent with a yellow tint while Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom depicted it as green.

Bubble Shield Power Glyph

The "Bubble Shield" Power Glyph.

In Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, the Shield does not appear as an individual power-up. Instead, it is created via the "Bubble Shield" Power Glyph which spawns one Shield whenever the player's Ring count hits zero.

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal

The Shield item box in Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal.

In Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, the Shields are translucent with a yellow tint. They can be found within the adventure levels in spherical silver and red item boxes which break when touched.

By unlocking complete sets of Blueprints, the player can obtain upgrades for the Shield. The "Shield Award" upgrade lets the player automatically obtain a Shield upon reaching the first Checkpoint, and the "Map Accelerator 3.0" upgrade will highlight Shield locations on the Adventure Map.

Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom

Shield SD2

A Shield item capsule.

In Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom, the Shields appear as transparent green bubbles. In gameplay, they can be found on the racing courses inside glass capsules with a red cap on the top and bottom and a green kite shield icon on the inside.

When obtaining the Shield, it not only prevents the player from taking damage, but also from losing a try whenever they come to a stop from colliding with an obstacle. After a certain period of time, the Shield will disappear. However, certain Sprites allow the player to manipulate it; Aegis extents the Shield's duration and Targa makes the Shield appear more often.
