The Shield is a power-up that appears in the Sonic Boom series. A defensive power-up, it envelopes the playable character in a spherical barrier which protects the wearer from taking damage once.

Description[]

The Shield can in most cases be obtained by breaking/touching item boxes displaying the Shield's icon in their respective games. When the player obtains the Shield, a protective bubble will appear around the playable character. This bubble will prevent the playable character from losing Rings, or even respawning if they hold no Rings, when they get hit by an enemy attack, touches an enemy, or runs into a damage-inducing hazard. When taking a damage-dealing blow with the Shield equipped, the Shield disappears and the player usually flies slightly backwards without taking damage. However, Shields will not protect the playable characters from falling into bottomless pits or getting crushed.

Once obtained, the Shield will usually stay equipped to the playable character until it is broken or the level is completed. In some games though, the Shield only lasts for a limited time.

The Shields themselves are sphere-shaped bubbles whose appearance vary slightly between games without explanation: Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal depicts it as translucent with a yellow tint while Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom depicts it as green.

Game appearances[]

In Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, the Shield does not appear as an individual power-up. Instead, it is created via the "Bubble Shield" Power Glyph which form one blue Shield around the playable character whenever the player's Ring count hits zero.

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal[]

In Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, the Shields are translucent with a yellow tint. They are found within the adventure levels where they can be obtained by opening spherical silver and red item capsules with a blue bubble inside them. These capsules break when touched and can be targeted with the Homing Attack.

By unlocking complete sets of Blueprints, the player can obtain upgrades for the Shield. The "Shield Award" upgrade lets the player automatically obtain a Shield upon reaching the first Checkpoint. There is also the "Map Accelerator 3.0" upgrade, which displays the location of individual Shields on the Adventure Map, making it easier to find them in the adventure levels.

Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom[]

In Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom, the Shields are transparent green bubbles. In gameplay, they can be found on the racing courses inside round glass capsules with a red cap on the top and bottom and a green kite shield on the inside.

When obtaining the Shield, it not only prevents the player from taking damage, but also from losing a try whenever they come to a stop from colliding with an obstacle. After a certain period of time though, the Shield will disappear.

Certain Sprites allow the player to manipulate the Shield's effects; Aegis extents the Shield's duration and Targa makes item boxes with shields appear more often.

Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice[]

In Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice, the Shields appear the same as they did in Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. In gameplay, they are found inside the adventure levels where they can be obtained by opening item capsules resembling golden bubbles with a group of seven blue circles inside them. These capsules break when touched and can be targeted with the Homing Attack.
