Sonic's World SWC

The beginning of the Shattered World Crisis, from Sonic the Hedgehog #256.

The Shattered World Crisis is an event that occurred in the Sonic the Hedgehog comics and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. Taking place in the Post-Super Genesis Wave timeline, the Shattered World Crisis was a major global catastrophe occurring on Sonic's World, where the planet was torn into multiple pieces by the excess energy from Super Sonic's interrupted attempt to undo the Super Genesis Wave. During this crisis, the New Freedom Fighters and their allies went on a world-wide quest to restore the planet back to normal with the Gaia Temples.

History

WC Eggman What Did You Do

The start of the Shattered World Crisis, from Sonic the Hedgehog #251.

The start to the Shattered World Crisis was sown when Dr. Eggman and Dr. Wily used the Super Genesis Wave to remold both Sonic's World and Mega Man's World. Super Sonic and Super Armor Mega Man, however, defeated their nemeses and they each prepared a Chaos Control that could return their worlds back to normal. However, unlike Mega Man, Super Sonic did not quite succeed in his task as Eggman attacked him, causing his Chaos Control to be distorted when it restored the Prime Zone.[1] As such, not only was the entire multiverse recreated and the timeline of the Prime Zone irreversibly altered, but all the excess energy from the Super Genesis Wave was applied to Sonic's World, energies that was too much for the fragile planet to bear.[2]

Countdown to Chaos

StH 254 Minor Earthquake

An earthquake occurring near Wood Zone, from Sonic the Hedgehog #254.

Because of the excess energies, Sonic's World began to experience global seismic activity manifested as earthquakes, and made as well a form of dark mutagenic energy leak out of the ground.[3] During this period, both the New Freedom Fighters and as well Eggman sought to survey the state of the planet. Eventually, however, the planet could no longer take the pressure and as such shattered into multiple continents hanging over the planet's core, marking the start of the shattered world crisis.[2]

Early Hours

SU 63 SWC Angel Island

Knuckles witnessing the dawn of the Shattered World Crisis, from Sonic Universe #63.

On hour zero of the Shattered World Crisis, when Angel Island was affected by the planet's break-up, Knuckles the Echidna left to find a "weakened spirit", whom was meant to help with the Shattered World Crisis, upon instructions from Tikal.[4] Knuckles soon found him, who was named "Chip", and eventually brought him to the New Freedom Fighters.[5][6]

At this point, the New Freedom Fighters and G.U.N. began their rescue attempts to save as many people caught in the chaos, G.U.N. launched Operation: Triage, while the New Freedom Fighters went to Station Square, until Amanda Tower and the Letter of Gabriel arrived to take over.[7] Meanwhile, Team Dark and the Spider Troupe were send by G.U.N. to defend the battered planet from the return of the Black Arms.[8]

StH 259 Gaia Talk

Professor Pickle explaining the Gaia Manuscripts, from Sonic the Hedgehog #259.

Learning that Pickle and Charles' research could help them shred light on the Shattered World Crisis, the New Freedom Fighters went and saved the professors from Dr. Eggman, who hope to use their research to help him control the crisis, though Eggman still got their research. As Pickle revealed they could restore the planet with the Gaia Temples and the Chaos Emeralds, the Knothole Freedom Fighters and their various allies thus began searching for both the Emeralds and the temples.[9].[4]

Effects

Though the world was broken, the full extent of what was ravaged is of yet unknown. Station Square was badly hit due to it being near a fault line, and it was stated to have been much worse had the Freedom Fighters not arrived. According to King Acorn however, Westside Island had been spared the worst of it. According to Orbot, the various Egg Armies had been rendered too busy to help as they were attempting to keep a hold on their captured areas.

The floating continents would also cause considerable problems for Angel Island, with the naturally floating island being caught in the land clusters. G.U.N. air and ground forces have also become spread thin due to the crisis.

Trivia

  • The Shattered World Crisis is an adaption of the story of the similar global event that occurred in Sonic Unleashed.
