The Shark is a large robot which (as the name suggests) resembles a stylized great white shark. It has a pointed head with a massive mouth, small projections on top, and small grooves along the sides; the latter are evocative of both eyes and gills. It has a tapered body made of multiple interlocking segments, with a large fin on its back and two pairs of slightly smaller fins on its sides. Its tail is long, thin, and lined with spikes on the top and bottom edges; at the end of its tail is a crescent-shaped fin with two small spikes perpendicular to it.
The Shark's body is green on top and gray on the bottom, dotted with red lights like many other Guardians.
History[]
Sonic Frontiers[]
The Shark was constructed by the Ancients as one of the many Guardians set to protect the Starfall Islands. Stationed in the sandy outskirts of Ares Island, it remained functional thousands of years after its creators' demise, continuing to patrol its territory in search of intruders. Sonic the Hedgehog could encounter 2 Shark units during his exploration of Ares Island, battling them for their Portal Gear.
Powers and abilities[]
The Shark is a capable burrower, being able to "swim" through its sandy home at very high speeds. It uses this ability to ambush its enemies, ramming them or attempting to bite them with its huge jaws; it can even build up enough momentum to perform impressive leaps in and out of the sand. It can also launch drill-like missiles from its larger side fins, which can be planted in the ground to act as explosive hazards.
Weaknesses[]
The Shark has a weak point on its back (just behind its dorsal fin) that stuns it temporarily after being hit, forcing it out of the sand and rendering it vulnerable to attack. Holding onto its tail prevents it from fully submerging itself in the sand, leaving it to jump and "swim" at the surface of the dunes.
Battle[]
The Shark is an optional boss that can be fought in the open-zone areas of Ares Island.[1][2] It lurks in a large, shallow sand pit near the edge of the island, engaging Sonic if he approaches it.
Boss guide[]
At the start of the battle, the Shark will leap in and out of the sand; the player must attack its exposed tail to have Sonic grab onto its spiked tip. This will make the Shark "swim" around the desert, trying to shake off the player with sharp turns and the occasional jump. To avoid losing their grip, the player must hold the joystick in a specific direction based on a prompt that appears on-screen.
After a while, Sonic will begin to slow the Shark down, causing it to thrash and growl in discomfort. At this point, the player can hit the Guardian's back to force it out of the sand, finally making it vulnerable to Sonic's attacks. Eventually, the Shark will recover and dive back underground; its next jump will leave it briefly stuck in the sand, spinning like a drill and giving the player a chance to land a few more blows before they have to repeat the entire process.
On subsequent chases, the Shark can perform up to four sharp turns in rapid succession, forcing quick reactions from the player to keep Sonic's grip on its tail. The robot may also fire missiles around the area, which will stick in the ground as it attempts to force Sonic into them. Follow the on-screen prompts to avoid the missiles; failure will result in Sonic being damaged and thrown off of the Shark's tail.
After suffering enough damage, the Shark will be destroyed, leaving behind a Portal Gear.[2]
The Shark has a few similarities to Wyvern, being a long-bodied robot with large jaws and spikes running along the top and bottom sides of its tail. Additionally, the fight against both foes involves grabbing their spiked tails with Sonic's opening attack, followed by a chase sequence that ends with the player gaining the means to actually harm the robot (forcing the Shark out of the sand and turning into Super Sonic to fight Wyvern head-on, respectively).
