Shadow Chao watches Sonic Chao dance nearby at Sonic's birthday party, cheered on by a group of other Chao, while a brooding the Shadow Chao sits beneath a tree, observing from a distance. The Shadow Chao moves behind the tree just as a rumble echoes, and the sky turns from blue to purple. The Time Eater suddenly appears, capturing all of Sonic’s friends into portals. Moments later, the Shadow Chao is also pulled into a portal along with several other Chao. It soon awakens in White Space, wide-eyed and disoriented, now completely alone. It spots Green Hill in the distance, but the once-vibrant area is now completely devoid of color. Remembering the Chao being sucked into the Time Eater’s portals, Shadow Chao realizes what it must do and starts running toward the colorless Green Hill.
As it explores its surroundings, Shadow Chao spots another Chao trying to revive a colorless flower. Meanwhile, Sonic races through Green Hill, restoring the color as he goes. Shadow Chao approaches the crying Chao huddled by the flower, and they watch in amazement as the color returns, bringing the flower back to life. Shadow Chao continues on its journey, with the other Chao following close behind. In Chemical Plant, while Classic Sonic navigates through the plant, the two Chao are seen rescuing another Chao from drowning. In Sky Sanctuary, as Modern Sonic races up a crumbling tower, Shadow Chao leads the two others through the clouds, where they find two distressed Chao cradling partially colorless grapes. In Speed Highway, as Modern Sonic zooms past on a rocket, Shadow Chao guides the group of Chao safely through the busy traffic. In City Escape, while Classic Sonic flees from the GUN Military Truck, Shadow Chao and the others notice a missing persons poster featuring Mighty and Ray.
When the Chao return to Green Hill, a Moto Bug charges toward them, but the Sonic Chao hurls a piece of fruit at it, destroying it. The Sonic Chao then decides to join the group. In Seaside Hill, as Modern Sonic races away from a giant stone wheel, the Chao watch in awe as an orca leaps out of the water, while the Sonic Chao keeps its distance, eyeing the water uneasily. In Crisis City, while Classic Sonic leaps from car to car in midair, the Chao frantically try to stop another from befriending an Iblis Biter. In Rooftop Run, Sonic Chao, Shadow Chao, and the other Chao float through the sky with balloons as Modern Sonic speeds down the clock tower. On Planet Wisp, as Classic Sonic dashes through Eggman’s terraforming industrial center, the Chao play with the Wisps. Sonic Chao races alongside a Cyan Wisp, while Shadow Chao has a tense stare-down with a Pink Wisp.
Suddenly, the Sonic and Shadow Chao are confronted by a Black Warrior. Just as the Sonic Chao steps forward to protect the others, Shadow appears and delivers a powerful Doom Blast kick, sending the warrior flying. As Shadow speeds off, the Sonic and Shadow Chao exchange amazed looks and shake hands, deciding to team up. They speed off together while the other Chao cheer.[2]
