The Semi[1][note 1] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, cicada-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman.

Based on cicadas, Semis are small, yellow bug Badniks. They have six grey, thin legs, a gray head with large black eyes, and yellow and orange-striped elytra.

In Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Semis appear in Wacky Workbench. In gameplay, they are found in small swarms on walls, usually in large hall sections with bouncing, flashing floors. When Sonic or Tails approaches them, the Semis start flying away to the left or right (depending on which direction Sonic or Tails comes from) while dropping flashing bombs from above, which deal damage upon impact. The player can use the flashing floor to reach and defeat these Badniks with the Spin Jump.

In the Bad Future or sometimes the Present timeframe of the Round, Semis show decay, their armor having partially fallen off, and cannot drop bombs. Also, like every Badnik in the game, they are powered by Little Planet flower seeds which will pop out of them when they are defeated.

Powers and abilities

Thanks to their wings, the Semis are capable of flight. They also able to produce bombs that they can drop on their targets.

  • "Semi" (セミ?) is the Japanese word for "cicada".

  1. While not listed in any instruction manuals, in-game source code from the Sonic Gems Collection version of Sonic the Hedgehog CD refers to this Badnik as "semi".
