Sega 3D Classics Collection (セガ3D復刻アーカイブス2 Sega 3D Fukkoku Ākaibusu 2?, lit. "Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives 2") is a video game compilation of ten Sega titles, the second entry in the Japanese-exclusive Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives series, and the sequel to Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives. It was developed by M2 and published by Sega for the Nintendo 3DS. A sequel, Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives 3: Final Stage, was later released in 2016.

List of games[]

Unlockable games[]

Gameplay[]

In Sega 3D Classics Collection, Fantasy Zone is included as a hidden bonus game. In order to unlock this game on the Japanese version of the game, the player has to possess the data from Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives. In the English version, on the other hand, the player just has to repeatedly tap the bottom-left corner of the bonus game screen for the game's icon to appear. Fantasy Zone also adds numerous features, including a radar function which was absent from the original version, and the addition of an alternate soundtrack.

New features[]

In 3D Sonic the Hedgehog specifically, a small variety of new features were added, all being accessible through the following portions of the Settings menu:

  • Game Settings
    • Game Version: The player can choose between playing the original Japanese version or the western version of the game, with there being minor differences in visual effects and bonuses.[5]
    • Spin Dash: The option to toggle the Spin Dash on or off.
  • Input Settings: Allows the player to rebind the game controls.
  • Screen Settings
    • Screen Mode: Includes "Normal" mode, which uses full stereoscopic 3D, and "Classic" mode, which reproduces the visual effects of a CRT television screen.[5]
    • 3D Style: Includes "Fall-In", which focuses on depth, and "Pop-Out", which focuses on the popping out effect.[5]
  • Sound Settings: The player can switch between emulating the Sega Mega Drive Model 1's sound channels or that of the Mega Drive Model 2.

Development[]

In Sega 3D Classics Collection, instead of the games being emulated, the code for the games were rebuilt so they could allow new features not seen in their original versions, like stereoscopic 3D. The physical cover of the compilation was illustrated by Pokémon character designer Ken Sugimori. In Japan, Sega 3D Classics Collection was released under the title, Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives 2.

Promotion[]

The bundle gave access to eight Nintendo 3DS themes, each themed after a classic Sega console. These included an arcade (titled "Hi-Tech"), SG-1000, Sega Mark III, Master System, Genesis, Game Gear, Sega Saturn and Dreamcast.[2] Interestingly, the Japanese version of the game lacks the arcade, SG-1000 and Sega Mark III themes.[7] Unfortunately, these themes still must be purchased and did not come along with the game.

Also, in Japan, an accompanying theme based on the game was available for ¥200 (~$1.99 USD).
