Seaside Hill (シーサイドヒル Shīsaido Hiru?) is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a coastal, archipelagic region on earth, recognizable for its checkered hills, beautiful coastlines and sea, and its various islands. It is also one of Sonic's favorite destinations,[1] and perhaps even his home.[2]

Description[]

Sonic Generations Seaside Hill Orca

One of the trademark palaces in Seaside Hill, from the console/PC version of Sonic Generations.

Seaside Hill is a coastal area with white sand beaches and a blue ocean inhabited by orcas. It is very tropical in nature, complete with palm trees and lush green grass covering the tops of its various trademark hills. It also possesses many cliffs and passages, and has various islands just outside the coast in the shape of whales. It is also known for various sea ruins (some of which move when approached) that are made of white stone with red patterns on them. These ruins come in the form of roads, platforms, flags, temples, and large palaces. These hint of an ancient civilization that had been established on the sea in the past.[3] Much like Green Hill, Seaside Hill's soil is brown and comes in checker patterns rather than layers.

History[]

Past[]

A long time ago, Seaside Hill was home to an ancient civilization on the sea.[3] While this society appears to be no longer present, its ruins are still in the area as part of its legacy.

Sonic Heroes[]

In Sonic Heroes, Seaside Hill served as the starting point of Teams Sonic's, Dark's, Rose's, and Chaotix's adventures. Eventually, the groups encountered "Dr. Eggman" in the Egg Hawk, and defeated the villain during their respective battles before proceeding to Grand Metropolis.

Sonic Generations[]

Classic Sonic in Seaside Hill, from the console/PC version of Sonic Generations.

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, as a side-effect of the Time Eater's time-traveling, a past version of Seaside Hill got transported to White Space where it was drained of color and life.

Seaside Hill was the sixth area Modern and Classic Sonic paid a visit to after ending up in White Space. After speeding through the area, the Sonics were able to fix space, thereby restoring Seaside Hill and, by extension, Espio from their lifeless states. When the Time Eater later got destroyed, Seaside Hill was seemingly returned to its rightful place in the timeline.

Sonic Forces[]

In Sonic Forces, Seaside Hill became one of the battlefields during the War to Take Back the Planet. At one point, Espio informed Knuckles that his squad was busy fighting in Seaside Hill and thus could not provide backup to the Resistance forces in the City.

Team Sonic Racing[]

In Team Sonic Racing, Seaside Hill appears as one of the main locations in the game. It has three racetracks, each of which explores different aspects of the location.

Team Sonic reunited with Team Rose at Seaside Hill after receiving an invitation from the mysterious Dodon Pa. After the teams encountered Dodon Pa at Seaside Hill, he took them with him on his spaceship to Planet Wisp to compete in his Grand Prix. After that, several teams would come to Seaside Hill on many occasions as part of the Grand Prix and have multiple races there. At the end of these events, everyone gathered in Seaside Hill after they destroyed the Final Fortress and saved Dodon Pa.

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, a snow-covered version of Seaside Hill appears as the venue for the individual and Dream Alpine Event. In these events, the playable characters ski against each other to the finish line. The level uses many of the elements from its appearance in Sonic Heroes. Along Seaside Hill, the competitors travel both the terrain along the coastal hills and the ruins of the seaside palace. Egg Hammers also appear here as the main obstacles.

At the opening of this Event, just before showing the characters, the camera rotates and gives players a view of the starting gate. Giant fans can be seen blowing artificial snow around the environment.

In Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Seaside Hill is a beginner track for the player. The area features a rather simplistic layout and includes many elements from the original Seaside Hill. However, it also combines elements from Ocean Palace and architecture like wooden bridges and undersea tunnels. The tracks Whale Lagoon, Lost Palace and Ocean Ruin, along with the arena Seaside Square, are all modeled after Seaside Hill. The Chao are also featured as spectators on these tracks.

In Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Seaside Hill appears as the setting for the Ocean View racing track. This time, the racing track incorporates elements from both Seaside Hill and Ocean Palace. Appearing as obstacles along this race track are the Giant Chopper and a colossal mechanical squid.

Sonic Dash[]

Seaside Hill Zone, from Sonic Dash.

In Sonic Dash, and its enhanced port Sonic Dash+, Seaside Hill is presented as three separate endless Zones named Seaside Hill Zone, Beach Zone and Temple Zone. In this game, they are the first, second, and fifth available racing sections respectively. After rebuilding them, the player will unlock Knuckles, Amy, and Vector as playable characters respectively.

Curiously, prior to specific updates to the original Sonic Dash, these Zones did not possess individual names, and were collectively referred to as Seaside Hill.
