The Scrapniks[1] are a group that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs by IDW Publishing. They are a group of worn down, discarded, independent Badniks with free-will that formerly served the Eggman Empire before residing on Scrapnik Island.
Description[]
The Scrapniks largely consist of independent Badniks previously created by Dr. Eggman. Due to this, they all have their own mechanical power supplies. Unlike the usual aggressive behavior of Badniks, the Scrapniks are much more kind in nature and more welcoming, especially due to the fact that they do not actively serve Eggman anymore. The Scrapniks are much more worn down compared to most Badniks, as they appear with quirks such as rust, chipped off paint, or damaged bodies. Additionally, some Scrapniks have missing features that their normal models may usually possess (such as missing limbs or a missing eye) and others have replacement parts from other Badniks.
History[]
Past[]
For an unknown amount of time, the Scrapniks began to live on a deserted Death Egg and began their own civilization there with recycled machines and spare parts. They called it "Scrapnik Island" after their group name, the "Scrapniks".[1]
The Death Egg's climate disruptor had begun to malfunction several times. E-117 Sigma, a member of the group, tried several times to fix it, but was not able to repair it fully. Furthermore, the attempts it made to decommission the item ended in failure.[1]
Scrapnik Island[]
The climate disruptor caused a large storm, which incidentally damaged the nearby Tornado, Sonic and Tails's plane, and made them crash onto the island. Sonic injured his ankle and fell unconscious, which led the Scrapniks to offering their help to Tails. They dragged the hedgehog inside the station and supplied him with a metallic brace. Following this, Sonic was placed under observation.[1]
When Sonic had woken up and looked for Tails, a group of Scrapniks led by Mecha Sonic followed him. However, due to Sonic thinking that they were hostile, he fled from them. Sonic soon meets up with Tails and Sigma and is informed that the Scrapniks are actually friendly. Sigma apologized for the confusion and for the crashing of their plane. It showed Sonic and Tails around the island. Mecha Sonic's systems were nearly forcibly taken over and Mecha Knuckles observed the group.[1]

Trivia[]
- The concept of the Scrapniks is somewhat similar to the Badniks from the Island of Misfit Badniks, a group featured in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series published by Archie Comics. Writer Daniel Barnes has stated that he was not aware that this story existed.[2]
- They are also somewhat similar to the robots from Scrap Valley from the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, as both those robots and the Scrapniks formerly worked for Dr. Eggman/Robotnik before siding with Sonic and becoming more peaceful.
- The name "Scrapnik" is a portmanteau of "scrap" and "Badnik."
- Interestingly enough, there are some Badniks throughout the series that share similarities to the Scrapniks (despite not being related), these Badniks include:
- The worn down Badniks found in the bad future (and sometimes in the present) from Sonic the Hedgehog CD, as they typically show signs of decay or lost parts similarly to the Scrapniks.
- The Zombie Orbinaut from Sonic Mania, as they are an amalgamation of worn down Badnik parts in a very similar fashion to that of the Scrapniks. The only major difference that the Zombie Orbinauts have compared to the Scrapniks is the fact that they are still antagonistic.
- The Quasi-Badniks are also an amalgamation of Badnik parts similarly to the Scrapniks. However, unlike the Scrapniks, the Quasi-Badniks are not worn down or broken, as well as them still serving the Eggman Empire opposed to the independent living Scrapniks.
