Pipes and traps stretched inside the hidden base. Defeat Doctor Eggman's top-secret weapon that awaits Sonic at the top of the Zone, and aim for the mysterious final Zone "Crystal Egg"!!

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit)[1]

Scrambled Egg Zone (スクランブルドエッグ[1] Sukuranburu Eggu?, lit "Scrambled Egg") is the sixth and penultimate Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit). As with all other stages in this game, Scrambled Egg Zone consists of two standard Acts followed by a shorter, third Act which contains the Zone's boss.

Description[]

Scrambled Egg Zone is a hidden base that is apparently set in the inside of a dark cave which Dr. Robotnik has sculpted for his own nefarious purposes. Blue rocks and dark, yawning caverns abound, illuminated by the pitiless blinking of the villain's linear light arrangements. The Zone is riddled with winding transport tubes.

Story[]

Having arrived at Scrambled Egg Zone, Sonic continues his journey of rescuing Tails from Robotnik's clutches. After getting through many traps around the base, he confronts the mad doc's sinster creation Mecha Sonic and defeats it, causing it to drop the Chaos Emerald. With all six Emeralds collected, the speedy blue hedgehog sets off for Crystal Egg Zone.

Gameplay[]

Scrambled Egg Zone features a ton of High-speed warp tubes, many of which dump Sonic unceremoniously into spikes pits.

Unlike all the preceding Zones in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit), Scrambled Egg does not have a Chaos Emerald hidden away in some secret location. To obtain the sixth and final gem, the player must defeat this Zone's boss.

Overview[]

Act 1[]

Act 1 is a vertical stage filled with many Tubes, Rings, and Spikes. It’s fairly straightforward, however, near the end of the stage, there’s a Tube section that requires taking the correct path or else Sonic will end getting lost.

Act 2[]

Unlike Act 1, Act 2 is horizontal and flatter. There are more alternating pathways for Sonic to take.

Act 3[]

Act 3 is a lengthy journey up springs and pipes

Boss[]

ScrambledEggBoss

Sonic vs Mecha Sonic, from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit).

After a lengthy upwards journey by tube and spring in Act 3, Sonic fights one of his first battles against his erstwhile robotic doppelganger. Mecha Sonic flies around the arena with rocket shoes and (non-damaging) spin attacks.

If the player has collected the five Chaos Emeralds from previous Zones, Mecha Sonic explodes on the final hit, dropping the green emerald (which Mecha Sonic was presumably using as a power source). This enables Sonic to proceed into the final Zone, Crystal Egg Zone. However, if the player did not collect the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic will not proceed to Crystal Egg Zone.

In other media[]

Archie Comics[]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Scrambled Egg Zone is a Zone on South Island. During a mission to save Tails, Sonic came under attack by the Silver Sonic prototype, whom had been led there by Breezie the Hedgehog, in Scrambled Egg Zone.

Trivia[]

  • In the Game Gear version of the game, this Zone's music was recycled for the intro. The music for this Zone was remixed as the music for Electric Egg Zone Act 3 in Sonic Chaos, and the intro in the Sega Master System version of the game.
  • Despite being known as Robotnik outside of Japan, this Zone's title still references the name "Eggman" regardless of region.
