In gameplay, the Savage Throw can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Linebacker Omega and Quarterback Zavok. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic can also use the Savage Throw if he uses the Steal Item to steal it from the aforementioned users.
Once obtained, the player can utilize the Savage Throw by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. When used, the user sets loose this power-up's football, which will travel down the lane it was deployed on in front of the user until it hits either a rival character or obstacle, or it wears off following a few seconds of flight. Rival characters that make contact with the Savage Throw will take damage, causing them to lose Rings and slow down momentarily. In addition, the Savage Throw can even damage a rival character if it is passing under said rival while they are jumping. To avoid the Savage Throw, the playable character has to either step out of its lane or slide under it.
The Savage Throw can also be upgraded by leveling the user up to level 6 and 12 respectively. For each upgrade, the speed of the Savage Throw's projectile is increased.
