Satoshi Okano (岡野 聡 Okano Satoshi?) is a former designer at Sega who worked on several early Sonic the Hedgehog series games, notably Sonic Jam.

History[]

Okano joined Sega in 1996 after serving as the planner, character designer and main graphic artist for KAZe Net’s Uchuu Race: Astro Go! Go!. He was responsible for promotional artwork of Sonic Jam, which was used as a cover for Sega Saturn Magazine. The title of the game also came from his submission, and meant, in his words: "The jam is like the jam in a jazz session. It means it’s packed with cool stuff.”[1]

His design of Sonic the Hedgehog for Sonic Jam was meant to be a "timeless, cutting-edge image." The artwork inspired Yuji Naka to hold an internal contest at Sega for a modern Sonic look in preparation for his Dreamcast debut. Other participants included Naoto Oshima and Takumi Miyake, and the winner ended up being Yuji Uekawa.[1]

Although he lost the contest, Okano would be asked to draw the cover art for the Japanese Sega Saturn port of Sonic 3D Blast. He would also serve as the character designer of Samba De Amigo. He left Sega in 2006 and established his own studio, Studio Okanotion, but he continues to still do character design work.[1]
