The Sand Worm[1] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a breed of giant Black Arms worm.

Appearance

The Sand Worms are large worm-like beings. They have solid dark brown skin with thorns on it, especially around their mouths. Also, instead of a face, they have a wide red mouth with six flaps around it.

A Sand Worm, from Shadow the Hedgehog.

In Shadow the Hedgehog, the Sand Worms burrow underground and attack from beneath, using smaller worms that home in on their prey. According to Doom's Eye, the worms find their prey by detecting their target's vital signs. Like the Black Oaks, it takes from two to seven hits for their destruction depending on the weapon used to defeat them.

There are also worms unique to certain areas such as Death Worms. It is fully invulnerable as its body can absorb attacks.[2]
