Route 99 is a big city with skyscrapers that can be spotted in the background.
Story
Route 99 is the starting point of Sonic and Tails' adventure after being separated from their friends by Eggman's world-shattering experiments with Chaos Control.
Gameplay
This mess of highway features a lot of straightaways to allow the player to become accustomed to the game's high speeds. There are also some simple platforming, switch puzzles and Grind Rails to get the player used to the Tag Action-based gameplay. Gimmicks include moving boxes, Star Light Zone-styled Seesaw, Spring Poles, corkscrew bridges, and Platform-raising Wheels. Dangers include badniks, spike pits, death by crushing, and a brief bottomless pit near the end of Act 1.
The boss here starts off with a fight with G-merl. To defeat him, the player needs to hit him four/two times. Then the characters are escorted to fight with the Egg Hammer 3. To defeat it, the player will need to know when he's going to hit the player. The hammer will smash left and right alternatively. When Dr. Eggman smashes down, the player needs to smash his face in. The player needs to hit him eight/six times for him to be destroyed.
Trivia
The city background of this Zone appears to be based on a pre-2001 Lower Manhattan as a skyscraper that resembles the North Tower of the former World Trade Center complex (as well as other buildings that resemble the surrounding World Financial Center) can be seen amongst the skyline. The original building was destroyed in the 11 September attacks, nearly three years before the release of Sonic Advance 3.
The background music for this Zone is a remix of the music that plays in Tails' Lab in Sonic Battle.
The music is also similar to the music heard in Emerald Beach from Sonic Battle.
The name of this Zone could be a reference to the famous U.S. highway, Route 66.
